BRX Pro Tip: Get a Coach Before You Think You Need One
Stone Payton: Welcome back to Business RadioX Pro Tips. Lee Kantor, Stone Payton here with you. Lee, when do you think is the right time to engage a coach?
Lee Kantor: This is a tough one. Most business owners wait until their stuck or they’re in a crisis before they ask for help and before they get help.
Lee Kantor: I think that in today’s day and age, there’s so many coaches out there that are doing such amazing things and can really help accelerate your growth. The best time to get a coach and to invest in a coach isn’t when the things are on fire. It’s when things are good enough that you have the space to do the work.
Lee Kantor: A great coach isn’t going to just help you solve that problem and triage that crisis. They’re going to help you see opportunities that you can’t see yet, and they’re going to help you identify landmines that you haven’t identified yet. And they’re going to help you push yourself to do things that you wouldn’t because you wouldn’t hold yourself accountable to having a coach.
Lee Kantor: I mean, just remember, pro athletes have coaches. These are the people that are the best in the world at what they do. And they’re not getting a coach and they’re not using a coach because they’re not necessarily fixing a flaw in what they’re doing. They’re investing in a coach because they’re trying to get better all the time. And getting better requires somebody from the outside who can see things that you’re not seeing.
Lee Kantor: So, here’s what to look for when you’re thinking about a coach. First, find a coach who has been where you want to go, not just someone who teaches concepts. Second, look for someone who’s going to challenge you, not just validate you. Third, commit to the process. Coaching only works if you actually do the work between the sessions. The sessions aren’t the work. The work happens between the sessions.
Lee Kantor: So, getting a coach before you hit that wall is one of the best investments you can make in your business, and hopefully it’s going to prevent you from hitting that wall.
