BRX Pro Tip: It’s Just Business, Really
Stone Payton : Welcome back to Business RadioX Pro Tips. Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here with you. Lee, I’ve heard a lot of conversation around work-life balance and that kind of thing, but I’ve been thinking about the behaviors, the disciplines. Like, how do you act and what do you do differently, if so, in your business life and your personal life? Your thoughts?
Lee Kantor: Yeah, I’m just tired of hearing, “Well, it’s just business. It’s just business, so I can behave this way because it’s just business.” Like it’s some excuse for bad behavior.
Lee Kantor: If it’s not okay in your personal life and you wouldn’t do it in your personal life, why would you think it’s okay to do it in your business life? I mean, it’s just so frustrating for me to see kind of this type of behavior being tolerated. And to me, it applies to everything, how you communicate, how you handle money, how you treat people, how you keep commitments.
Lee Kantor: If you wouldn’t lie to a friend, don’t lie to a prospect or a client. If you wouldn’t go someone in your personal relationship, why would you ghost a prospect? It doesn’t make any sense to me. If you wouldn’t overcommit to your family, why would you overcommit to your business partner?
Lee Kantor: Your character shouldn’t change depending on what hat you’re wearing if you’re at work or at home. Are you doing anything you wouldn’t do in your personal life? Are you charging hidden fees? Are you overpromising and under-delivering? Are you talking poorly about competitors? Are you not following up? These are signs that something has to change.
Lee Kantor: The professionals who win in the long term are the ones whose personal integrity matches their business integrity. People trust them because they’re consistent and they’re trustworthy. Your action step is pick one practice in your business that you know wouldn’t fly in your personal life and try changing it.
