Kenneth Morton / Elekta
Product Support Specialist

Born and raised in St. Thomas, USVI Kenneth Morton graduated from high school in 1990 and, following in the footsteps of an older brother, he joined the Navy and set off to see the world.

Over the course of twenty years and multiple tours of duty, Kenneth was stationed in California and Washington State, where he was deployed on aircraft carriers in the Gulf and honed his skills as an aviation electronics technician. Rising through the ranks he held the positions of Work Center Supervisor, Instructor and Training Petty Officer. His last rank before retirement was Petty First Class Officer.

“When I left the Navy in 2010, I knew I wanted a job that made a difference but I wasn’t sure what that would be. Of course I knew about cancer but I wasn’t familiar with radiation oncology. Today I have a job that matters. I make sure that the patient on the table gets the treatment they need, when they need it.”

Throughout his naval career, Kenneth learned to maintain, troubleshoot and repair sophisticated equipment and also managed the software systems that support the machines. The skills he developed in the Navy prepared him for his second career in the medical device industry, but the military gave Kenneth much more than a technical education.

“In the military, you’re exposed to diverse cultures and people. You learn to understand and respect where people are coming from and how to emphasize their strengths. Being in the military taught me to stay calm in high-pressure situations and get the issue resolved.”

Kenneth joined Elekta in 2011 and after four years as a Field Service Engineer, he moved to Atlanta and became a Product Support Specialist, with a principle role of providing real-time virtual technical support to leading medical institutions across the country.

“My military career gave me an education in life and I am proud to have served our country for twenty years. Building a career in medical technology has also given a chance to serve people in need. It’s an overwhelmingly satisfying job.”

Stephanie Everett / Stephanie Everett consulting

I don’t know when my love affair with budgets first began. It was a love that grew quickly and deeply. Soon, it wasn’t enough to just do my own budget. I was proclaiming the joys of budgeting to my family, friends, work colleagues…anyone who would listen.

I didn’t stop there. Soon, I was immersed in studying leadership, time management, and business development skills. At the beach, my friends read the latest gossip magazine, while I learned how to motivate employees or organize my work day.

In March of 2008, I put all those skills to the test when my law partner and I launched our law firm. I remember the initial fear and felt overwhelmed at times, but also excited for the opportunities and possibilities. Like most attorneys, we learned how to run the business the hard way–through trial and error. We eventually figured out what worked and grew the firm from 2 lawyers and an assistant to 20 people in less than 8 years.

Today, I’ve turned my passion for and experience in creating, running and growing a law business into a business benefiting lawyers who may feel stuck in their own practice. I know exactly what it feels like–the frustrations, anxieties, hopes, and possibilities–because I’ve been there. I help attorneys avoid the “hard way.” Instead, let’s chart a bold course for a life and career that turns the attorney’s vision into practice.

To do this, I created B-School For Lawyers. This 10-month program is designed to give attorneys the tools to create and implement a successful law business. Meeting in small groups one Friday a month, attorneys accepted to the program will learn how to create a law business that excels, grows and moves consistently toward your ultimate goals. In between class sessions, participants begin implementing these systems into their practice, assisted by one-on-one coaching sessions to address specific concerns.

Liz Schoen

Talking Compliance

On this week’s episode with Medical Association of Georgia, healthcare law expert, Liz Schoen stopped by to share information regarding compliance with current healthcare law and regulations on Top Docs Radio.

Liz Schoen has more than 25 years of experience in the health care field. She serves as a legal and business advisor for health care providers and businesses. Schoen began her legal career as an assistant regional counsel for the U.S. Department of Health, Human Services in Atlanta. Later, she served as the general counsel and chief compliance and privacy officer at the Harbin Clinic – a large multi-specialty, physician-owned medical practice in northwest Georgia.

While there, she was responsible for advising the executive team, board of managers, physicians, and staff on a variety of federal and state complex legal and regulatory matters related to health care and compliance. Schoen drafted, reviewed, and negotiated the majority of contracts for the organization as well as developing and enhancing its compliance and privacy programs and protocols.

She also worked as hospital counsel for the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, and she was the vice president of compliance and assistant general counsel for the Georgia Hospital Association. Schoen has a law degree from Emory University School of Law.

Complying with the staggering number of complex federal and state laws and regulations is a daunting task for physicians and their staff, regardless of the medical practice’s size. Distinguishing between marketing “hype” from outside consultants versus practical reality is another challenge faced when trying to allocate proper resources that don’t appear to directly impact patient care.

The first step for medical practices is understanding what compliance issues are and how they pose risk to their practice.
