On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Carla Birnberg who answered a bunch of weight loss
and fitness questions from our Twitter fans and shared some of her best training tips. Here are some of the questions with answers – @fabfattieshan wanted to know proper running tip toes strike or heel – MizFit and Dr Fitness both said mid sole. @kwidrick wanted to know proper gym etiquette regarding correcting someone exercising incorrectly – answer is to not do it – unless you are considering asking them out but do give them a funny nickname. Also wanted to know how MizFit motivates herself when she is not feeling motivated – Carla does it for her kid and Dr Fitness talks himself into doing it for just a couple of minutes which always turns into a full workout. @sugarwand wanted her thoughts on group exercise classes – Carla isn’t really into them but you should always pick out activities that you like and will do. @joannasutter wanted to know the self talk that Carla used to help her through her recent half marathon. Carla said her mantra was “I know I can F’n do this” and @dailykat asked the best way to integrate strength training into your routine – Carla said to make it fun and give yourself 6 weeks to see results. I’m sorry we couldn’t get to more of the questions but we ran out of time. To learn more about what she is up to go to www.mizfitonline.com

to staying compliant to your fitness and exercise program is to get a smaller “BUT” She says we all know that exercise is important BUT we always come up with an excuse not to do it. She explains that the missing ingredient to your fitness or weight loss program is your brain. You have to change how you think in order to lose weight and maintain the weight loss. Some great tips were: write a list of the pro’s and con’s of exercising vs not exercising; be mindful with your eating; don’t take an all or nothing approach – 5 minutes of exercise is better than no minutes plus the minutes add up over the course of the day. Your goal is to make exercise a daily habit like brushing your teeth – something you do without thinking that is integrated into your life. don’t lose weight then turn around and gain the weight right back. This kind of up and down dieting is bad for you over time. She explained that losing weight lowers your risk of heart disease and lots of other diseases as well. She suggested eating oatmeal in the mornings as a healthy breakfast. She feels that people need support in order to stay compliant to their exercise and weight loss programs. And she begrudgingly agreed with the Fat Guy’s theory that you diet for weight loss and exercise for health. She added that exercise helps with weight maintenance once you lose weight. She also gave us some weight loss tips from her last book The No Time To Lose Diet, which is now in paperback. She also told us about her new Dr Melina Bar and where to get them. Today Carla answered about a dozen fitness questions we received from the Twitterverse. Here is a quick recap of some of her answers: never stretch cold, attitude is everything, pay attention to your rate of perceived exertion, try swimming for people with knee problems, consistency is critical with your cardio, beef jerky is a great power snack, identify your specific language of encouragement – everyone needs support a little differently, and remember for good health you must: stretch, do your cardio, lift weights and eat clean. recently nominated for an award for his desk at CES. This amazingly large workspace is 72″ x 34″ and fits over the treadmill that you already own that is gathering dust in your garage. According to Dr Fitness this will change the way you work. In his perfect world workers will move from cubicles to treadmill desks like the TrekDesk. Steve explained that by walking at a slow 1 mph pace all day long you can burn a significant amount of calories. For example sitting down burns about 15 calories an hour – standing burns about 50 calories an hour and walking at 1 mph can burn over 100 calories an hour. And at that non-strenuous slow pace you barely even notice you are doing anything – you’re not tired or sweating. It’s even better for your back than slouching over your computer all day.
