Dr. Scott Kelly
Dr. Scott Kelly, author of “What I’ve Learned From You: Lessons of Life Taught to a Doctor By His Patients”

Dr. Scott Kelly

I sat down with practicing orthopedic physician and author of the book, “What I’ve Learned From You:  The Lessons Of Life Taught To A Doctor By His Patients“.  He shared the story of how this moving and inspirational book came together.  He described how the book was drawn from journaling he did during his medical training over the course of several years.

He has always had a passion for writing and uses the medium as a way to process things that are important to him or that make an impression on him in his daily life.  Dr. Kelly talked about how he was going through some things in the attic and came across the journal several years after putting it away and how emotional it was to go back and read his thoughts and experiences from that time in his life.

He thought the interesting experiences and life lessons he picked up through numerous patient encounters would be great for his children to hear about and decided to put it into book for basically for them.  He decided to submit the manuscript to publishers and was surprised by the enthusiastic positive response he received.

You’ll enjoy listening to him tell his story and you can readily hear how big of an impact those life experiences had on him that he carries with him today.  Check this great interview and learn more at his website.

Judith Dennis/Roswell Urgent Care Center

Roswell Urgent Care Center is an urgent care clinic serving children, adults and seniors with common injuries and illnesses, or other medical requirements. They serve Roswell, Woodstock, East Cobb, Sandy Springs and the surrounding areas. They are committed to delivering quality patient care, convenient hours, prompt service and low costs to their patients. Their board certified physicians and physician assistants are fully prepared to handle your urgent and immediate care needs. They accept most major insurance plans and walk-ins are always welcome.

Philip Kouns/The Children’s Village at Christian City

Christian City is a non-denominational, non-profit organization with a mission to minister to the spiritual, physical, social and psychological needs of families, with particular emphasis on children, the aged and infirm, by providing residential, health and social services according to the principles and teachings of the Christian faith.

For more than 49 years The Children’s Village at Christian City has provided a quality Christ-centered, family-focused, community-based program of care for the many “children of need” coming to them.

The Children’s Village affords a safe and loving haven to children from circumstances that are disturbing to desperate. The reasons they come to them are varied, but each child needs the loving care of adults they can trust, and safety from abuse. Sometimes they lack even the very basics like food and shelter.

Their ministry provides children a stable environment where they learn structure, responsibilities, and live in productive, affirming and safe homes. They seek to meet the child’s needs through four distinct programs: The Children’s Village at Christian City residential program, Project Safe Place, the Transitional Living Program, and the developing ministry to young adults with cognitive challenges and developmental disabilities.

Veronica Maldonado/Georgia Mentor Protege Connection

The Georgia Mentor Protégé Connection (MPC) is a business development program  administered by the Georgia Education Foundation (GEF) in partnership with the  Department of Economic Development and the Georgia Institute of Technology. Emerging  firms who are accepted into the program have an opportunity to make tremendous strides  in areas such as business acumen, methods and procedures, competitiveness and capability.

In addition, MPC enables Georgia small businesses to benefit from a partnership with a  corporate mentor for a period of one year. Emerging firms can build relationships, explore  new technologies, learn about best practices, and benefit from the wisdom of corporate executives who are committed to the long-term health and overall growth of small businesses in Georgia. The goal of the program is to help small businesses to be successful over the long haul by helping them to develop capacity, enhance their skill sets, and become more competitive. Research has shown that access to the right kind of coaching and mentoring significantly increases the success rate in small business, while both the mentor and the protégé benefit tremendously from their interaction.

Not only is summer travel season almost here, but international business travel is becoming the norm. Travel medicine is a rapidly evolving field of medicine.  As travelers prepare to travel, they must know the medical resources and care during their stay, and may require post travel follow up.

In 2012, over 1 billion people crossed international borders, yet reportedly, only 13% of them sought any kind of health care information or visits prior to departure.   People are traveling for business, as tourists, for adventure and for longer stays. The CDC estimates that 30-60% of travelers will be come ill as a result of their travel. This radio segment features pre-travel  preparation, vaccination requirements and recommendations, medical condition management, cruise ship concerns, and post travel care information as provided by Dr. Anderson and Kathy Buell, RN a local travel medicine expert with Passport Health.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Lou Paradise with Topricin, Dr Fitness’ favorite pain reliever healing cream. Lou developed Topricin when he couldn’t find relief for his carpal tunnel syndrome. He didn’t like those menthol products that stain your clothes and sometimes burn so he developed his own solution. Topricin is a doctor recommended pain reliever that works because it doesn’t just mask the pain and it uses no volatile oils. This is a great alternative to prescription and non-prescription over the counter stinky pain relieving medications. It can be used throughout the day as much as you’d like because it is made with 11 homeopathic medicines that are safe and effective for pretty much everyone (elderly, children, pregnant women and people with all skin types). Since Topricin doesn’t mask the pain symptoms and actually helps the body heal, you may shorten the amount of time you need to use it. This anti-inflammatory pain reliever and healing cream is available in most healthy sections of stores but you can go online to their website www.topricin.com to find a store near you.
