Exploring Military and STEM E17

In honor of Veterans Day, the November STEM Unplugged podcast features a conversation about Military & STEM. Our featured guests – Chaz, Celeste and Daniel share their personal experiences and highlight career pathways in the Navy, Army and Air Force. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math are relevant in many Military Occupation Specialties (MOS) along with enhancing personal skills in leadership, communication and project management.

Arizona is home to seven different military bases, including one of the largest bases in the world – Luke Air Force Base. Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson is one of the most active while Fort Huachuca Army Base in Sierra Vista is the home to the Army Intelligence Center & Network Enterprise Technology Command. While the Navy and Coast Guard have not established any bases in Arizona for obvious reason of the lack of coasts, Marine Corps Air Station in Yuma spreads over 3000 acres. All of the bases in Arizona are quite large, around five to six thousand military personnel each and offer additional opportunities for civilian contractors and the logistics network in our state.

Listen in to meet PO1 Chaz Schrader, a Nuclear Field Coordinator with the United States Navy, share about the personal growth and success he has had after enlisting in 2013 and his assignment on the fast attack submarine USS Jefferson City (SSN-759).

Learn more about the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion goals for DEMA, The Department of Emergency and Military Affairs from LTC Celeste Snyder who serves as the DEI officer. DEMA consists of the Arizona National Guard (Air, Army & Joint Task Force), the Division of Emergency Management and the Division of Administrative Services to focus on merit based promotions for all career pathways in state and federal positions.

Major Daniel Romero, Director of Operations for the 56th Civil Engineer Squadron describes his pathway to STEM and how it began early in life with exposure to hands on activities. With his training and leadership skills, he is charged with leading a team of 204 personnel maintaining and sustaining 1,043 facilities, a 3.7 billion dollar infrastructure and the 1.7 million acre Barry M. Goldwater Range in support of the 171 F-35 and F-16 aircraft.

Our host, Kelly Greene had a chance to share details about her 21 year career in the United States Army. After joining at the age of 17 and serving in three combat deployments, she shares about the skills military training in logistics and human intelligence provided to find success in her current role as the Chief Operating Officer at SciTech Institute.

The Department of Emergency and Military Affairs (DEMA) consists of the Arizona National Guard (Air, Army, Joint Task Force), the Division of Emergency Management and the Division of Administrative Services. DEMA provides unique capabilities and services to the citizens of Arizona in three distinct roles: community, state and federal.

Nancy Bullock-Prevot retired from the Navy after 21 years as a Chief Petty Officer, in Cryptologic Technician Collection (CTRC). Her last command was the USS SOMERSET (LPD-25), named after flight 93, which was the last of the 9/11 ships. As a plank owner and first Chief CTRC onboard the USS SOMERSET (LPD-25), she assisted in the building of the Operations Department and OT Division.  As the first Chief for the OT Division she served as principle advisor to USS SOMERSET’s Commanding Officer and the Operations Officer on their security programs and cryptologic matters.

As a retired United States Navy veteran with over 20 years of service Chief Prevot wanted to continue serving her country. As a woman veteran, she believes that women veterans are the ones who are often forgotten. “People forget that women served just like their male counterparts and fall on their luck in the same way”. Prevot wanted to do something to help women veterans that are struggling with varieties of obstacles that have led them to homelessness, knowing that could have easily been her.

In August of 2016, Prevot founded The H.E.R. (Honor, Empower, and Rebuild) Foundation, which she formed to help homeless female veterans who are single. HER is ready to help the homeless female veterans by providing affordable housing and other services that may lead them to establishing successful futures.

Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

–            Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.

–            Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We are in our third year of production of the magazine and our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication. For 2017, we will only produce one edition. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips.

–            Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2017, our conference will be held on Thursday, October 19th at Sanders Beach.

–            Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

–            Women in Leadership radio podcast show – sponsored by Pensacola Business Radio X. We hold monthly shows featuring local community leaders and other men and women in business. We engage our guests in conversational style in-depth interviews. They share their advice on topics such as mentoring, keys to success, time management tools, personal mantras and favorite inspirations, and what men can do to help support women in business.

–            Membership in Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is also available.
