Michael J. Daugherty/LabMD and The Cyber Education Foundation

Mike Daugherty is the CEO of LabMD, a cancer testing laboratory. He has spent most of the last decade defending his company against charges that it had deficient cyber-security practices. The early years of his entering and fighting Washington, DC, are recorded in his book “The Devil Inside the Beltway”. In so doing, he has become the only litigant to challenge the basic authority that underlies more than 200 enforcement actions relating to cyber-security and online privacy that the FTC has brought over the past 15 years. Every one of the over 200 litigants before him, including some of the largest companies in the world, have settled with the FTC, creating an unquestioned and untested belief that the FTC has broad authority to regulate in these areas. On June 6, 2018, he prevailed. In so doing, he toppled key pillars of the FTC’s cyber-security and online privacy edifice, successfully exposing and challenging The Administrative State.

Sarah Babrick/WES Leukemia Research Foundation

The WES Leukemia Research Foundation is a Gwinnett County birthed non-profit that is seeking the day “When Everyone Survives” by investing in new, innovative and potentially curative leukemia research. They work very hard to keep overhead extremely low so that all funds raised go directly to research. Each spring they have a Medical Advisory Board that reviews the grants submitted to WES from researchers all around the world and they determine the top grant recipients who will receive $50,000 towards their research on July 1st. Even though a cure has not been found yet, WES Leukemia Research Foundation funded research has been extremely successful in development and many new treatment options have been discovered that provide a better quality of life for those going through a battle with leukemia.

Neil Stevens/Oconee State Bank

In the early 1900s, there were banks in all the small towns of Oconee County…Bishop, Bogart, Eastville, Farmington and Watkinsville. When the Depression came along in 1929, all the banks went broke and Oconee County was without a bank for the next 30 years. Farmers and small merchants had to travel to Athens for their banking needs. In 1958, a group of community leaders recognized the need for a bank in Oconee County and started a process of getting the necessary approval for a state chartered community bank. In 1959, they announced that the FDIC had approved a community bank and Oconee State Bank opened its doors for business on February 1, 1960 with 3 employees and a small corner office on Main Street in downtown Watkinsville.

Today, Oconee State Bank has 3 full-service financial centers located in Oconee County, GA as well as a website which serves as an “Internet Branch.” The vision of the founders continues today. Oconee State Bank is proud to provide an unparalleled commitment to personalized service, value-added products, and a deep sense of responsibility to the communities they serve.

Trevin Dye/JETRO

JETRO, or the Japan External Trade Organization, is a government-related organization that works to promote mutual trade and investment between Japan and the rest of the world. Originally established in 1958 to promote Japanese exports abroad, JETRO’s core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping small to medium size Japanese firms maximize their global export potential.

Beth Mathews/JapanFest

JapanFest Atlanta, the largest Japanese festival in the Southeast, will be held September 16-17, 2017, at the Infinite Energy Center in Duluth from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday. Japan is the number one foreign investor in Georgia, and JapanFest celebrates the special economic and cultural bond Japan and Georgia share together.
