ABOUT 1 MILLION CUPS
Based on the notion that entrepreneurs discover solutions and engage with their communities over a million cups of coffee, the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation developed 1 Million Cups in 2012—a free program designed to educate, engage and inspire entrepreneurs around the country. Through the power of volunteers, 1 Million Cups has grown to more than 180 communities.

As a program of the Kauffman Foundation, 1 Million Cups works with entrepreneurs, empowering them with the tools and resources to break down barriers that stand in the way of starting and growing their businesses. Mr. Kauffman believed it was a fundamental right for anyone who had a big idea to be able to bring it to life—and we’re here to fulfill that mission.

OUR CULTURE
Diversity, equity and inclusion are key to the success of our programs. Nationwide, 1 Million Cups communities aim to present an inclusive and supportive front door to their local entrepreneurial ecosystems. These qualities are essential for 1MC to fulfill its mission to educate, engage and connect entrepreneurs with their communities. And they are too essential to leave to chance as the number of 1MC communities continues to grow.

ABOUT THE KAUFFMAN FOUNDATION
Founded by Ewing Marion Kauffman, the Foundation is driven to provide uncommon ways to create opportunities and connect people to the tools they need to achieve success, change their futures and give back to their communities. We believe that if you have an idea, you have a fundamental right to start a business to make it a reality.

We also believe that opportunity lies in the fields of education and entrepreneurship. Our team is based in Kansas City and made up of connectors and doers who dream big, solve problems with the communities we serve and take calculated risks to drive results.

Kelly Reeser

Kelly Reeser serves as the Director of Entrepreneurial Development for FloridaWest Economic Development Alliance.    In this role, Kelly is tasked with supporting our region’s high-growth entrepreneurs with both startup and growth strategies.  She accomplishes this goal by managing the Gulf Coast Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship- an innovation and technology-based incubator, partnering with local entrepreneurs to host Startup Weekend Pensacola, ITEN Wired and by coordinating entrepreneurial efforts with community partners.

Kelly currently serves on the Board of Directors for Junior Achievement and The Global Corner, and is a member of the International Business Innovation Association.  She was a member of the Leadership Pensacola Class of 2013 and also serves as a volunteer with middle school students at Olive Baptist Church.

Kelly holds a Master of Arts degree in Development Management & Public Policy from Georgetown University and bachelor degrees in Spanish & Latin American Studies from Southern Methodist University.  She is a native of Pensacola, an avid traveler and loves being a mom—she enjoys spending time with her husband, Chris, daughter, Evangelina, and baby boy, Elliot.

Jim Rhodes

Jim has actively participated in the planning of the annual ITEN Wired Summit since 2012 and is in his 5th year serving as its director.

He is a native of Pensacola and a graduate of Tate High School and the University of West Florida, where he received his degree in finance. He moved to Charlotte, NC in 1997 with a goal of furthering his career in banking, but later developed a passion for information technology. Upon graduating ECPI College of Technology, he officially entered into the world of IT in 2001. After working several years as a network engineer, he and his family relocated back to Pensacola in 2007.

Jim has been employed by AppRiver since 2008 and currently manages the mobile solutions team which provides mobile device support for a global customer base of almost 300,000 users. He also serves as an advisor to the board of directors for IT Gulf Coast and as a board member for Innovation Coast.

He is married and has two sons. He enjoys golfing, kayaking, and fishing.

DR. SARAH LEATHERMAN

CHIROPRACTOR & Owner at Integrity Weight Loss Center

Here’s something you may not know about me and why I’m so committed to giving back.

Let me provide some back story. I grew up in a rural Oregon town, a mere speck on the map and no stop lights. Well versed in my ABC’s, I skipped kindergarten and began 1st grade at age 5. While I excelled academically, I was physically awkward through my teen years. My graduating class was less than 35 students, so any school activity or sport basically required everyone’s participation to stay viable. So I played volleyball, basketball and ran track. But my favorite sport was joining the cheerleading squad my Junior year. I loved cheering on other people.

Despite being involved in sports throughout the school year, looking back, I was “the sick kid”. You know, the one that got knocked down by a cold or strep throat several times per year and I suffered with acne. I took dozens of rounds of antibiotics all while trying to keep up with the demands from academics, sports and other school programs. All of these activities kept me busy and I was used to pushing through the stress and illnesses.

College was an exciting change! So many new people and experiences at the University of Oregon. I continued to push myself academically with many hours of late night studying and take-out pizza. By the time I was ready to graduate, I had packed on the “Freshman Fifteen” and then some. I also continued to get sick and suffered from seasonal allergies and daily migraines.

I had TWO things that happened my Senior year that proved to be significant life events. First, a friend introduced me to her Chiropractor. With my first adjustment, my health began to change. My constant headaches were gone and my allergies improved. Second, I changed my major to Psychology & Women’s Studies. Again, I love communicating with people and have a passion for inspiring and empowering women. To graduate on time, I had to take 18-20 credits per quarter. To round out my graduation requirements, I took a weekend seminar on nutrition. I was fascinated to learn how to feed my body for healing and the importance of protein. I had stopped eating animal protein for several years and didn’t know anything about vegetarian sources of protein. No wonder my immune system was shot! This was my launching point for the beginning of my career.

From there, I moved to Kansas City to attend Cleveland Chiropractic College. There I met my future husband and we completed our doctorate program in 2003. I was awarded a Clinical Excellence Award and further developed my passion for women’s health, with a clinical focus on pregnant women and babies.

In 2005, we were thrilled to discover I was pregnant with our oldest son. My nutrition was on point and I exercised regularly throughout my pregnancy. Then, I had a baby. And as many new mothers can attest, my needs took a back burner and I wasn’t exercising or eating as well as I should. Then, I had another baby. And the lactation diet didn’t work as well this time. I was overweight, exhausted and subsisting on coffee and carbs.

Then I attended a weekend workshop and heard this, “you can’t be an authentic physician, advising patients to eat right and exercise if you’re not doing it yourself.” Ouch. Right through the heart. That Monday, I made the decision to invest in my health and called and made an appointment with a personal trainer. I had never done consistent weight training and was intimidated to use that section of the gym. During that first assessment, I couldn’t do a sit up or push up and my sweat smelled like greasy French fries. I was in really poor shape. But I committed to training 3x/week and my trainer was a wonderful accountability partner. As I gained strength I also gained confidence. I was no longer that awkward teenager and in fact was even able to do handstand pushups!

At age 38, I was feeling healthier and stronger then I had in my whole life. My trainer encouraged me to compete in a fitness competition. I thought, “No way!!!” But it’s funny how an idea will take root and I committed to 12 weeks of training for a competition. I hired a competition coach that aligned with my values: No crazy diets. No artificial sweeteners. No appetite suppressants. No metabolic stimulants. No hours and hours of boring cardio. Only real food and quality workouts.

At age 38, with a body that birthed two children, I won 2nd place amongst women half my age!

While my stage photos looked awesome, what I’m most proud of is the 12 week journey leading up to the 30 seconds on stage. That’s where the interesting part of the story is. Do you know my secret? Consistency. As my coach would always say, “Just follow the plan.” I meal prepped on Sundays. I would create workout “challenges” with my kids outside. I included my family on my journey. They didn’t see Mom “on a diet”…they saw Mom nourishing her body and modeling healthy food choices while pursuing her fitness goals.

In the end, this was a GREAT experience for me because it demonstrated just how powerful food alone can be and what you can do when you put your mind to it. I made simple, practical and consistent changes and I didn’t starve myself.

Whatever health challenge you may be facing and however dire your needs are for improved weight and improved health, there is an answer out there. My mission is to help people achieve their health goals as quickly as possible in a safe and supportive environment and enjoy lifetime results, thereby improving the overall health of our community and building a culture of wellness and vitality through optimal nutrition. With regular success visits, follow up body composition analysis, daily texting support, whole foods recipes and DNA testing, we are geared to help you celebrate success!

Yours In Health,

Dr. Sarah Leatherman

THE REASON FOR OUR SUCCESS

The reason we have so much success with weight loss at Integrity Weight Loss Center is because we know that everyone’s reason for weight gain can be completely different. Weight gain for some patients results from stress or poor lifestyle choices, and for others it can be more complicated. It’s not uncommon for us to find that some people are pre-diabetic and need assistance with handling blood sugars. Others may struggle with weight loss because of infections or conditions like Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.

At Integrity Weight Loss Center, we follow the Lifetime Metabolic Program for fat loss. Additionally, as part of this program we utilize Genetic Testing to determine the right plan for you. A well-known clinical study was performed by one of America’s top universities, Stanford University, to determine if DNA testing was effective to assist in helping people to lose weight. When compared to other well-established and effective weight loss programs, those people that were on a meal plan that was specific to their genetic profile lost 2.5 times more weight than those that were not on an individualized plan. The science clearly speaks for itself. This is the reason why we utilize genetic testing to identify the best plan for you. This allows us to put the control back in your hands! For the rest of your life, you will know how to eat and to be as healthy as possible. The test is completely painless, non-invasive, and an imperative part of your focused lifestyle change.

2017 Pursue Your Passion Conference

To celebrate National Business Women’s Week 2017, Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast proudly presents their 5th Annual Pursue Your Passion Conference, bringing together nearly 200 women to share their business skills and creativity during networking events and educational sessions.

Pursue Your Passion Conference is Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast’s annual fundraiser for Gulf Coast Kid’s House (GCKH), as 80% of the conference profits are donated to GCKH. This year’s funds will be used to upgrade current security at GCKH to better protect their clients, partner agencies and employees, allowing them to service children in the Pensacola area safely and securely. In 2016, PWGC donated $3456 to GCKH. The goal for 2017 is $5000.

Pensacola businesses can partner with Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast in raising funds for the Gulf Coast Kids House in the following ways: providing door prizes, being an event sponsor, signing up for a vendor table or purchasing a ticket in someone’s name so they have an opportunity to attend the Conference.

Highlights of the conference, which receive rave reviews each year, include Experience Hall, an interactive Speed Learning session, and relevant and engaging speakers featuring a national keynote speaker and 3 local community leaders. Ticket prices include lunch and am/pm snack breaks.

Pursue Your Passion Conference consists of 2 events:

1. Meet the Speaker and Sponsors Expo is held the evening prior to the conference. It creates opportunities for attendees to network with one another, engage with the featured speakers and learn more about the conference sponsors and vendors. It also provides sponsors and vendors additional face to face time with attendees to highlight their businesses and products. This event is open to both men and women. If you are interested in a vendor table, you can find details on vendor tables on our Sponsorship Opportunities flier.

PED Talks – Professional and Executive Development – PED Talks are short, power-packed presentations by local community leaders sharing their thoughts on subjects important to women in business. This year we are proud to present our PED Talk speakers:

PED Talk Speaker – Quint Studer, Founder and CEO, Studer Community Institute ● “Even High Performers Struggle with Change” ● Program description: Individuals who have always performed highly can sometimes underestimate the impact that change will have on them. Through Quint’s work with organizations over the decades he has found high performers struggle with change even more so than others. Quint will describe why this is and what can be done to help high performers manage change.

PED Talk Speaker – Sue Straughn, News Anchor and Senior Editor, WEAR TV, Channel 3 ● “Let Your Passion Find Your Purpose.” ● Program description: You give your best and you give your most when you’re giving from the heart. Is your heart in the work that you do; in the service that you give? We will take just a minute to think about some ways to get the most out of our time, our resources and our life.

PED Talk Speaker – Andrea Krieger, Executive Director of Institutional Development. Pensacola State College Foundation ● “You CHOOSE (Motivated by Fear/Inspired by Excellence) No one can be a better YOU!” ● Program description: Is fear negative and inspiration positive? If you get sweaty palms each time you have to present to an audience… if you get butterflies when you have to pitch an idea or make a sale… if you spend additional hours ensuring work is “perfect” before you hand it in… are these indications of fear or inspiration? Is one good and the other bad? Both fear and inspiration can reap excellence, but there can be diverse consequences on individuals depending on how the motivation is viewed. This presentation will discuss whether it is better to strive for excellence or fear failure? When inspiration is founded in a belief that No one can be a better YOU, possibilities are limitless.
