TRANSCRIPT

Intro: [00:00:02] Broadcasting live from Riskworld 2022 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, it’s time for Workplace MVP. Brought to you by R3 Continuum, a global leader in helping workplaces thrive during disruptive times. Now, here’s your host.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:22] Hi, everyone. You’re host, Jamie Gassmann, here with the Workplace MVP podcast and we are broadcasting from the Riskworld 2022 Expo Hall in R3 Continuum’s booth. And with me is Paul Jenkins from Lockton Companies. Welcome to the show.

Paul Jenkins: [00:00:37] Hello, y’all.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:40] Playing off of our producers, y’all. I love it. If you learned anything at RIMS, it was y’all.

Paul Jenkins: [00:00:46] Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:47] Well, welcome to the show. We’re happy to have you.

Paul Jenkins: [00:00:49] Yeah. Thanks for having me.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:50] Yeah. So, tell us a little bit about what Lockton does and your background.

Paul Jenkins: [00:00:53] Yeah. So, Lockton Companies is an insurance broker and they are a broker for all lines of business, looking to provide solutions from an insurance perspective for their clients.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:04] And, you’ve been in the industry quite a while.

Paul Jenkins: [00:01:06] Yeah.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:07] I think you shared with me you started as an underwriter. So, tell me a little bit about your background.

Paul Jenkins: [00:01:10] Yeah. Okay. So, I left school. I wanted to be an architect. And, in London – in the London market, you don’t have to study to get into insurance. You tend to get into insurance by accident. So that’s what happened to me. I started my career as a cat modeller. So, I was doing RMS scheduling and running some analysis from that. And from there really, it just sort of happened by osmosis. I got into underwriting, as a result working in the Lloyd’s market, always doing property insurance. And I’m now a broker at Lockton.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:43] Wonderful. And, what has the last few years looked like in the broker kind of world going through the pandemic and some of the changes that have happened in the business world?

Paul Jenkins: [00:01:54] Yeah. A real challenge for us in London on the basis that, you know, in the Lloyd’s mMarket, it’s the oldest insurance market in the world, you know, and that it’s a marketplace. It’s been going for about 350 years. And most businesses still transacted face-to-face, so person-to-person in one place in a market, and lockdown prevented us from doing that because we didn’t have a marketplace. So, we adapted ever so quickly with Zoom, WebEx, iMessage, however you’re doing this stuff.

Paul Jenkins: [00:02:27] But, yeah, it’s been difficult because you’ve essentially been working in isolation and you would normally have your team around you. And we do work as a team. We’re a close-knit team and the youngsters learn from being in-situ and, you know, listening and taking on board what’s going on around them. So, it’s been a challenge for a number of reasons. You know, from a trade perspective, it’s been difficult. From a coaching perspective and a learning perspective, it’s been a challenge. But we’ve managed to do it and we’ve managed to grow our book. So, you know, we’ve got more clients now than we had prior to the lockdown and we’ve got high revenues than we had prior to the lockdown. So, I suppose on reflection, it’s really quite incredible that we’ve been able to do what we did.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:10] Yeah, I bet. And so, your clients that you have that you’re speaking of, are they mostly in just London or is it kind of a global kind of clientele or?

Paul Jenkins: [00:03:20] My clients will be North American clients.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:23] Okay.

Paul Jenkins: [00:03:23] So, they’ll be in America or in Canada.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:26] Great. And then, I’m sure Lockton is kind of a global, anywhere that they might be located, and broadly you guys can support them.

Paul Jenkins: [00:03:32] Yeah. We’ve got a big network and a really successful network in the U.S.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:37] Yeah.

Paul Jenkins: [00:03:37] And, we’re growing our footprint globally. So, we’ve just opened offices in South America and in the Caribbean and in Australia and New Zealand. So, you know, we’re growing the footprint so that we can look after our clients as they expand and grow because many of our clients, you know, are growing internationally as well.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:55] Wonderful. And I know this is not your first room, so it’s not – you’ve been here before, but what is one of your most exciting, you know, or what are you most excited, I guess I should say, about being here at the show this year?

Paul Jenkins: [00:04:08] Yeah. It’s great to be able to travel again. Again, you know, we would often see our clients. Our clients come to London to meet with us and our underwriters, or we come to America to come and meet with our clients. So, it’s really wonderful to be able to meet people again. And many of these people are people I’ve met for the first time. So, they’re new clients. As I said, you know, we’ve been able to grow the portfolio of business that we have. We’ve done that successfully by providing amazing service, you know, to our clients to give them the best possible outcomes. And it’s nice just to, you know, make friends with new people and –

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:42] Yeah, totally.

Paul Jenkins: [00:04:43] And to be here together.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:44] Yeah. And the clientele that you have, just question, is there anything from a risk perspective or an insurance perspective that’s changed or shifted in terms of the types of things that they need support with?

Paul Jenkins: [00:04:56] It’s ever-evolving. So, take for example the current global environment with regards to supply chain. Supply chains are disrupted all over the place, and for some clients, they have coverage for this, and for others that they don’t. But just trying to identify how they are running their business and continuing to operate with all this challenge, you know, with their business, it’s something that you can only really understand once you’re talking to people and once you get, you know, underneath the – you can’t present this stuff in an email or in an Excel spreadsheet. So, you need to listen to the clients as to what their challenges are, understand the business need. And that allows us to provide them the best possible policy and the best possible coverage at the best possible terms so that, you know, they’ve got the cover that they need in the event of a disruption or loss.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:51] Yeah. And like kind of keeping like a pulse almost on what might be potentially a risk for them, too, as things continue to evolve. Because as I always say, you know, the complexities and challenges we’ve experienced over the last few years have required businesses to think of things differently.

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:06] Yeah. Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:07] Because they’re faced with more.

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:08] Yeah. Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:09] So, interesting.

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:09] And not just that many businesses had to either close or reduce, you know, their capacity or their ability to produce things, which meant that they might have laid staff off. And then, now having to challenge to try and –

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:23] Hire them.

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:23] Hire people. You know, there’s a real war on talent at the moment with regards to being able to get good people who know what they’re doing. And that in itself, you know, that might not be an insurable thing, but that in itself is a business problem that I think many people are at the moment trying to get their arms around.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:39] Yeah. Absolutely. Well, it has been an absolute pleasure to hear from you.

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:42] Yeah. Thank you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:42] Yeah. So if people wanted to get a hold of you or to reach out to you about the services that Lockton Companies offers, how would they be able to do that?

Paul Jenkins: [00:06:50] Well, I suppose you could look on social media. There’s LinkedIn and others if I’m plugging, you know those platforms, or likewise, you can go on the website and we’ve got all the contact details that you need to be able to contact us.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:05] Wonderful. Well, thank you so much for being on the show. It’s been a pleasure.

Paul Jenkins: [00:07:08] Yeah. Thanks very much.

Outro: [00:07:14] Thank you for joining us on Workplace MVP. R3 Continuum is a proud sponsor of this show and is delighted to celebrate most valuable professionals who work diligently to secure safe workplaces where employees can thrive.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:22] Hey, everyone. Jamie Gassmann here, your host of Workplace MVP, coming to you from RISKWORLD 2022. And with me is Carlos Castillo. Hi, Carlos. Welcome to the show.

Carlos Castillo: [00:00:33] Hello. Good morning.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:35] So, talk to me about tell me where you’re from, what company you work for and what your company does.

Carlos Castillo: [00:00:40] Yeah, I’m from Costa Rica. The company is called CONFIA, which means trust. We are a brokerage insurance company. We started operations 12 years ago. When the market opens, we were in a state monopoly for 84 years with only one insurance company. Right now, we have 13 insurance companies from different countries. The market has grown. Right now, it’s at $1.4 billion in premiums. It’s a very attractive market. So, we started operations there in 2010 as a broker brokerage company.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:23] Wow. And this is your first time attending the RIM’s conference. So, talk to me what are you excited about with your first, you know, experience here? What are you looking forward to?

Carlos Castillo: [00:01:33] Yeah, I always wanted to visit RIMS, but this is the first year. I’m expecting to meet different brokers, different companies looking for opportunities. So, that’s what I’m here for, to make contacts.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:50] Yeah. So, the networking aspect of the show, I think there’s a lot of that going on here, which is great.

Carlos Castillo: [00:01:56] Absolutely, yeah. We’re looking for that networking opportunities, not just for Costa Rica, where we have operations. Also, we also operate in Dominican Republic and Honduras.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:07] Wow! So, kind of expanding your operation and see if there’s, you know, potential with some of the other brokers that might be working here at RIMS.

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:14] Exactly.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:14] Yeah.

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:15] Exactly.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:15] Are you planning on attending any of the sessions at all right here?

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:18] Yes, yeah.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:18] Yeah.

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:19] I will.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:19] Well, which ones attract you the most? Like, which topics are kind of your, like, go-to, can’t-wait-to-sit-in-that-audience for?

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:26] Well, I’m looking for a different topics: cyber insurance, marketing, global market opportunities. Yeah, I registered in some of the conferences.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:39] Yeah, fantastic. So, I know you’re networking and this is a great show for that. And are you — so far, I know the show has just kind of started, so far, have you been pleased with what you’ve been finding?

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:52] Oh, absolutely, absolutely. Everybody is very up and happy to see each other after the pandemia, right?

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:59] Yeah.

Carlos Castillo: [00:02:59] It’s great after being two years in Zoom calls.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:03] Yeah.

Carlos Castillo: [00:03:04] So, it’s fantastic to have the opportunity, you know, to talk to people personally and to make contacts. So, everybody is very willing to share information, and everybody wants to do business.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:16] Yeah. Well, I really hope that you make a lot of great connections. And it was so great to have you on our episode here, and to meet you, and to hear a little bit about your background and really appreciate you stopping by.

Carlos Castillo: [00:03:27] Well, fantastic, fantastic. Our contact information is in www.confia.co.cr.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:39] Great. Wonderful. That way, if they need to get a hold of you or they want to reach out for partnership or any business-

Carlos Castillo: [00:03:45] Absolutely.

Intro: [00:03:45] … they actually have that opportunity to.

Carlos Castillo: [00:03:47] Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:47] So, thank you so much for joining us. It was so great to talk to you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:21] Hi, everyone. Jamie Gassmann here, your host of Workplace MVP, coming to you from RISKWORLD 2022. And with me is Shari Paul. Hi, Shari.

Shari Paul: [00:00:32] Hello.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:33] And welcome to the episode. Give me a little background of your role and who you’re with.

Shari Paul: [00:00:38] I am here with Alliant Insurance. We are one of the largest brokers in North America. And I do all of the digital marketing, digital media for the company.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:52] Wonderful. And I know you have a very specific topic. I think you guys even have your own podcast. What’s the name of your podcast?

Shari Paul: [00:00:58] We do. We have quite a few podcasts actually, because we have so many different specialties that there is – my gosh – The Financial R&R with Ron and Ryan. That’s one of the most popular ones. We’ve got Digging In with our agribusiness team. And then, just a blanket Alliant specialty podcast.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:23] Yeah, kind of covers a whole-.

Shari Paul: [00:01:25] Yes.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:25] … kind of-

Shari Paul: [00:01:25] Covers gamut.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:26] … gamut of different topics and area of conversations around the industry. And I know one of the things that we were talking about before we jumped on our mics mix was about the power of social media in this industry. So, what are some of your thoughts around that?

Shari Paul: [00:01:42] Absolutely. You know, what’s interesting about the insurance industry is that it’s not very social media — I don’t want to say savvy, but there — it’s hard to get someone on board with doing the social media or seeing the ROI or seeing the value in it. And what we discovered with the pandemic is that there was a lot of opportunities with doing podcasts, with doing the webinars, with doing different type of digital media and digital experiences that worked out phenomenally. So, that’s-

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:18] Yeah. So, it’s almost like creating an ecosystem from your organization, basically, that extends out of just the in-person opportunities like a conference because, obviously, the last couple of years, it wasn’t as readily available.

Shari Paul: [00:02:31] Right.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:31] And you know, virtually, it’s tough to network on a conference virtually.

Shari Paul: [00:02:36] It is.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:36] It’s what I’ve found. So, talk to me about, like if somebody was really wanting to put together kind of — from a social media perspective, kind of a program and promoting that internally, how could they build that case internally to kind of get that kind of moving through the ranks?

Shari Paul: [00:02:50] Yeah. What’s great is to find your cheerleaders, right? To find those evangelists of social media. And we have quite a few that have gone out and actually started their own blogs, they post on social media, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram almost daily. And from that, what we have found, actually, is we’re getting a lot of press attention. So, we have gotten quite a few journalists reach out to us based on the topics that we’ve been putting out to do interviews. So, it’s actually been phenomenal.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:25] Yeah. So, it’s like almost like finding those thought leaders that are willing to present themselves as that in a very public way?

Shari Paul: [00:03:32] Right. I mean, you put a thought leadership piece out or, you know, an article or something like that, or press release, and it’s one dimensional. So, you don’t really get to go into the different thoughts or, you know, it’s just that at that one time. But when you’ve got a lot of people on talking about what’s going on, you get a lot more, I think, bang for the buck there.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:56] Yeah, absolutely. And like staying really current with industry trends, and things that you’re seeing and you know, people that might be looking they’re looking for something right now, you know.

Shari Paul: [00:04:05] Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:05] Not that happened four years ago. They want to know what’s the current world. So, if you’ve got like somebody who maybe is a little hesitant in your organization, but, you know they’re brilliant, you know, what are some of the tactics you’ve used to convince them to get behind your microphone?

Shari Paul: [00:04:20] Constantly asking. Constantly, “Come on, I know you can do it. I know you can do it.” Yes, we’ve had a few that are reluctant, but once you get them going, and they get that first podcast under their belt, then they understand that it’s easy.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:35] Yeah. Once they get the taste of that media, right? And the attention.

Shari Paul: [00:04:40] Yeah.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:40] Just like all of us, right? We can, like, thrive on that in a way.

Shari Paul: [00:04:45] Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:45] So, if there was one like leaving, you know, idea or advice or concept you wanted to leave on this episode for anybody that might be listening post-show, what would that be?

Shari Paul: [00:04:57] Just do it. Jump in and do it. You know, you don’t have to worry about equipment. There’s a million different ways to do it. There is lots of, you know, mics and things that you — I mean, we do ours on Zoom, you know. So, we do produce them afterwards. But, you know, just get in there and do it. There are so many topics and so many news items that just, you know, hit the airways, that you’ve got to get something out there quick, and having someone sit down and write something or try to respond to it, it’s not as – it just doesn’t work as well as doing a podcast or or a social media feed.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:39] Yeah, wonderful. Well, it’s been great to have you on an episode.

Shari Paul: [00:05:42] Thank you so much.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:43] Yes. Thank you so much for joining us. And if somebody wanted to get a hold of you to get more information from you, how can they reach you?

Shari Paul: [00:05:50] www.alliant.com or you can give me an email at shari.paul@alliant.com.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:59] Wonderful. Thanks again so much for joining us.

Shari Paul: [00:06:06] Thank you.

Mitch Dunford, Chief Marketing Officer, The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research

Mitch Dunford is the Chief Marketing Officer for the National Alliance.

For over five decades, The National Alliance has set the standard for quality, practical continuing education and for delivering what insurance and risk management practitioners want. Over 150,000 respected professionals, across the U.S. and worldwide, have used and continue to use their programs as the foundation upon which they build their successful careers and businesses.

The educational programs and research conducted by The National Alliance were built on a foundation of integrity, innovation, and imagination. These qualities commit them to act responsibly, to be accountable for their actions, to fulfill their obligations, and to inspire others with their relentless determination to achieve a standard of excellence in every endeavor.

The National Alliance began with a request from a small group of independent agents in Texas who were seeking a first-of-its-kind educational program for insurance practitioners. It has grown to become the nation’s leading professional insurance and risk management education resource. From the inception of the very first CIC institute, conducted in 1969 in Austin, Texas, they have had two very simple goals:

  • To provide excellent programs of practical value to the best insurance and risk management practitioners, and
  • To continually work to bring greater recognition and value to their achievements.

TRANSCRIPT

Intro: [00:00:03] Broadcasting live from Riskworld 2022 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, it’s time for Workplace MVP. Brought to you by R3 Continuum, a global leader in helping workplaces thrive during disruptive times. Now, here’s your host.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:24] Hi, everyone. Your host, Jamie Gassmann here at day two at Riskworld 2022 in the expo hall, in R3 Continuum’s booth. And joining me is Mitch Dunford, he’s with The National Alliance.

Mitch Dunford: [00:00:37] Hey.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:37] Hi, Mitch.

Mitch Dunford: [00:00:38] Hi. Thank you for having me.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:40] Yeah, welcome to the show.

Mitch Dunford: [00:00:41] It’s great.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:42] So, talk to me about, what does the National Alliance do?

Mitch Dunford: [00:00:45] We are just over 50 years old. We are one of the leading educators in the insurance industry. We do continuing education. We also have five different designation programs for insurance and risk management professionals, three on the insurance side and two on the risk management side.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:03] Wonderful. And then, what kind of platform are those educational resources available and is it online learning?

Mitch Dunford: [00:01:09] Yeah, good question.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:10] Yeah.

Mitch Dunford: [00:01:10] Yeah, so it’s all of the above. Historically, we have provided live classroom events across the country—across the world, as a matter of fact. And then, obviously, with COVID, that all shifted and we moved it 100% online. So, we have live instructor-led online courses, and we have a number of self-paced courses, where you can log on to our website and experience an educational program on your own time, make your own progress.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:42] Yeah. So, if one of the insurance carriers here is looking to offer training or seeking training from your organization, what are some of the topics and educational content you have available for-

Mitch Dunford: [00:01:53] Oh, runs the gamut across property casualty insurance, commercial lines, personal lines, life and health. We have an introductory series for new people that introduces them to some of just the fundamentals of the insurance industry, the language, then we have a program for CSRs. It’s called the CISR. And then, we have a program for producers, principals to earn the CIC. And then, there are two risk management designations, the CRM, the certified risk manager, and then a special risk management program for risk managers who focus on education or schools.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:35] Fabulous. And you’re also a part of a marketing organization that are—marketing organizational group, kind of like a networking group, where marketers and PR representatives of these various companies here at the RIMS World are able to participate in, do you want to tell me a little bit about that?

Mitch Dunford: [00:02:52] Sure. Yeah. It’s the IMCA, the Insurance Marketing and Communications Association. I’m on their board. I’m also currently the Chair of their CMO Council. And in fact, this June in Orlando, we’re holding a live annual event, where I’m hosting a panel that focuses on what we’re calling the new normal, post-COVID. What’s our work life like now, post-COVID? What are the expectations of our employees? What are the expectations of our employers in this new normal after COVID?

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:28] Interesting. And so, that group of panel members, who are they among? Like are they representatives from different carriers?

Mitch Dunford: [00:03:37] Right. We’ll have representatives from some carriers, we’ll have representatives from agencies, and we have some HR people there.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:44] Fabulous. So, you’ll have like a really nice mixture of kind of expertise helping to comment in that area. That’s fantastic.

Mitch Dunford: [00:03:50] Right. And I roped in one of my colleagues, Jeff Buck, who works on our marketing team. He’s a millennial, and I said, “We need your voice on there, Jeff, to represent the younger people and how they see themselves in this new work environment”.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:05] Yeah, absolutely. So, with, obviously, the networking group you’re in, and you’re touching on some trending things in terms of that new normal, and especially with a bunch of workplaces looking at that return to the office, the training that National Alliance is providing, are there trainings that you’re providing that help to tap into some of that from a risk perspective? Is there any trending that you’re seeing that’s different from before, or is it all pretty much status quo?

Mitch Dunford: [00:04:33] Well, what we’re hearing right now, we’re hearing it at the National Alliance is our people are more interested now than they ever have been in their work-life balance. They discovered that, hey, we don’t need to drive into the office every day, I don’t need to sit in traffic, I don’t need to burn up fuel, we can be just as effective, or sometimes, even more effective working remotely. So, at The National Alliance, we’ve tried to respond to that.

Mitch Dunford: [00:05:04] We’ve done some remodeling at our office, making workspaces where people can come in when they want to come in, just plug in their laptops, collaborate, go to work. We’ve built some meeting spaces and our employees are really excited about having that option. We also have built a new recording studio, a podcast studio and a new video studio at our headquarters to use audio and video in our educational content. It’s kind of fun.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:35] Yeah, that’s awesome. Like trying different techniques of ways to communicate, right? Because that’s one of the things I’ve noticed as a marketer myself, is that that easier to digest content is just what people are craving, kind of that quick audio medicine.

Mitch Dunford: [00:05:51] Right. And this younger generation, I mean, that’s how they learn. In fact, I have a son who’s in his late 20s, very successful young man, on his resume, when it asks for his educational experience, he puts YouTube on there, because he’s learned so much. He’s a marketer, he’s a PR guy, he’s learned so much from YouTube, he lists it as one of the educational organizations that has helped him build his career. Isn’t that amazing?

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:21] That is amazing. I’ve never heard of that, but it makes sense. It’s like I think of like around the house, you want to fix something yourself, go to YouTube.

Mitch Dunford: [00:06:31] When you want to know how to build a website or something like that, go to YouTube.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:34] Yes, go to YouTube. Wow. That is fascinating. So interesting. And I know that like work-life balance, I know my team, I’ve got a few, including myself, we like to take afternoon runs, like use that as your lunch break. I know you and I both participate in this 5K this morning, oh, the views of the Golden Gate and Alcatraz, wow, unforgettable. So, I mean-

Mitch Dunford: [00:06:55] But wait a minute.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:55] Yeah.

Mitch Dunford: [00:06:56] So, you guys, in the afternoons, your team, you stop what you’re doing and you guys go out on a run?

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:02] Well, they go on their own individual, but they take their lunch break and they do that.

Mitch Dunford: [00:07:06] That’s amazing.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:06] Yeah. And I do the same thing. It just breaks up that workday and I like it. In fact, we’re planning a team 5K at some point this summer. We’re going to all get together and go run something together.

Mitch Dunford: [00:07:16] I love what you guys do. I mean, you’re focused on the mental wellbeing, and how an employee’s emotional state impacts their productivity, their happiness in their jobs.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:30] Yeah, it makes a huge difference.

Mitch Dunford: [00:07:32] Huge.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:32] It really does. Yeah. Because it’s like if your employee is not happy, either, A, they’re not going to stay, or B, you’re not going to get the full potential out of them. And so, ensuring that you’re supporting their wellbeing, particularly following something catastrophic in that work environment they’ve never maybe experienced before in their life, can make a huge difference in how they view you as their employer.

Mitch Dunford: [00:07:54] Huge. And I think employees are wanting more of that. In their relationship with their bosses and their careers, they want to feel appreciated and like their whole person is important.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:08:07] Absolutely.

Mitch Dunford: [00:08:08] And as we express that, their job satisfaction increases, everything, all the productivity, the quality of the work goes up.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:08:19] Yeah. And as humans, by nature, following something that happens in the work environments, like a disruption of some sort, a lot of times, people don’t really quite know what they need in that moment or how to process that. And having somebody come in that helps them to just like talk through how they’re feeling or even just for them to hear how others might be feeling can be really supportive overall as an organization. So, it does make a huge difference.

Mitch Dunford: [00:08:46] I know for me, my father passed away back in November and it wasn’t unexpected. He was in his late 80s, had dementia, but I was surprised how much it impacted me, and just my work, my thought processes. I even expressed it to Will Hold, our CEO, just, “Will, this is really getting to me”, and chatted about it. But you’re right, an employee’s emotional wellbeing really impacts their performance at work.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:20] Yeah. And it’s not always a mental illness, per se, it’s just that things happen, and sometimes, you just need an outlet to process it.

Mitch Dunford: [00:09:30] Right.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:30] Yeah, absolutely. It’s been really great chatting with you.

Mitch Dunford: [00:09:33] Oh, thank you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:34] If somebody wanted to get a hold of you and learn a little bit more about the National Alliance or about the marketing organization that you said-.

Mitch Dunford: [00:09:42] The IMCA.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:42] IMCA. I just didn’t want to mix up my letters there.

Mitch Dunford: [00:09:45] Yeah. It’s the insurance industry, there are acronyms for everything.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:47] Absolutely. So, if anybody wanted to learn a little bit more about that or get information about your June conference that’s coming up, how would they be able to do that?

Mitch Dunford: [00:09:55] So, the website for the IMCA is imcanet.com. Just visit their website. And like I said, the annual event is in June this year in Orlando. If you’re interested in The National Alliance, or any of our designation programs, or CE, you can visit our website at www.scic.com.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:18] Wonderful.

Mitch Dunford: [00:10:19] Yeah.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:19] Well, thanks again so much for joining me, Mitch.

Mitch Dunford: [00:10:21] Thank you. My pleasure.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:21] It’s been so great talking with you.

Mitch Dunford: [00:10:23] So fun to see you and congratulations on the run this morning.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:25] Oh, you as well. Yeah, we were big finishers.

Mitch Dunford: [00:10:27] Yeah, we got through it.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:28] It was a blast.

Mitch Dunford: [00:10:30] Yeah. Thank you, Jamie. I appreciate it.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:10:31] Yes. You’re very welcome. Thank you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:22] Hi, everyone. Your host, Jamie Gassmann here, and I am at our podcast sponsor, R3 Continuum’s, booth at Riskworld 2022. And joining me is Mark Walls from Safety National. Welcome, Mark.

Mark Walls: [00:00:35] Welcome. Hello, Jamie. Thank you for having me.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:37] Well, it’s a pleasure to have you on the show. So, tell me a little bit about what Safety National does.

Mark Walls: [00:00:43] Safety National is a commercial carrier reinsurer dealing with employers that retain risk, mostly high-deductible self-insurance workers comp, multi lines. We do cyber, a lot of different things, but focused on the commercial casualty line.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:00] Wonderful. And so, I know you’re an exhibitor at the show and your booth is like right in the front of the expo hall, so how has it been going for your team here, and conversations, and what’s the energy feel like?

Mark Walls: [00:01:13] It’s just been nice to get out. After two years of not having these events, it’s just been nice to get back in the game again, be out among people again. I think everybody’s really enjoying that.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:24] Yeah, I think so, too. I know I’ve been enjoying all of the conversations we’ve been having and the people we’re meeting. I mean, there’s a lot of positive energy, I’m feeling, in the expo hall.

Mark Walls: [00:01:33] Yeah, I would agree. Just everywhere. I mean, the events that I’ve gone to have all been packed, a lot of energy, a lot of enthusiasm. People are just glad to be back in the game.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:42] Yes, it definitely is fun to be able to like kind of be amongst like peers in a way, right?

Mark Walls: [00:01:48] Yes, agree.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:49] Yes. See people we’ve been seeing on Zoom calls or LinkedIn and social media, going, oh, look at what’s going on in their life, now, we can actually talk about it.

Mark Walls: [00:01:58] Mm-hmm. Agree.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:59] Yeah. So, now, you’re a speaker at this year’s conference. Talk to me about what is the topic you’re presenting on?

Mark Walls: [00:02:04] So, tomorrow, I’m leading the public entity industry session. It’s something that I’ve done here at RIMS, as long as I’ve come to RIMS. So, 10-plus years, I’ve led this session and I’ve got Steve Robles from LA County and Kevin Confetti from the University of Chicago helping to lead the discussions. And it’ll be very much a free-form, interactive discussion with the people that show up, talking about the challenges that public entity risk managers are facing and how they’re working through some of those.

Mark Walls: [00:02:33] So, public entity faces some very unique things. Among the things we’ll be talking about is law enforcement liability insurance, and the types of claims, and the size of the claims you’re seeing in that space. Sexual assault, sexual molestation claims, there’s been a lot of changes in legislation around the country impacting that. Another big challenge for public entities is the cyber marketplace. Quite frankly, they’re a huge target for cyber hackers, and because of that, they have a really hard time getting insurance.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:07] Wow. Interesting. So, looking at the topic and the panel members, I know you’re having kind of an interactive dialogue, but what are some of the things that you’re hoping that that audience is going to take with them when they leave that session?

Mark Walls: [00:03:21] The goal is to come up with some ideas, some solutions. I mean, everybody knows what the problems are, and there’s a lot of common problems. So, you hope that what you come out of that is a nugget or two around, how have you been able to work around this? What solutions have you found? How are you approaching this? So, that’s the goal with events like this, is to get people together, share ideas, share solutions. If you come away with a nugget or two that helps you solve a problem, you’ve had a successful trip.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:52] Yeah, absolutely. It’s almost kind of like an on-show like brainstorming session in a way.

Mark Walls: [00:04:01] It really is. I mean, to me, the thing I’ve missed the most the last two years is the casual collaboration that you have in these events, the opportunities to just have a discussion with people around what’s happening in their world and how they’re dealing with it. And that’s what I try to make this session when we have it, because it’s the only public entity session at the entire conference, and so we want people to come there and just collaborate.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:24] Yeah, absolutely. The best part is that human connection where we can learn from each other. So, that’s fantastic. Well, I hope it goes well for you.

Mark Walls: [00:04:33] Thank you. I’m sure it would be amazing.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:34] And I absolutely appreciate you being on the show. I know we’ve connected a few times and I kind of pulled your arm, and like, let’s go. So, thank you so much.

Mark Walls: [00:04:41] Well, thank you for having me. I appreciate it very much.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:42] Yeah, absolutely. Thanks, Mark.

Mark Walls: [00:04:44] Alright.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:22] Hi, everyone. Your host, Jamie Gassmann here, coming to you from the Riskworld 2022 at the R3 Continuum booth, our show sponsor. And joining me is Marcos Iglesias from the Travelers Insurance Group. Welcome to the show, Marcos.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:00:36] So good to be with you, Jamie. Thank you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:38] You’re very welcome. Now, tell us what is your role at Travelers? What do you do for them?

Marcos Iglesias: [00:00:43] Sure. So, at Travelers, I’m the Chief Medical Director, and I sit in the work comp product team. And we have a team that is called the Medical Innovation and Strategy Team. So, it’s myself and three nurses, and we help to set some of the strategy around the work that we do in the medical space, primarily in workers comp. And we support some other lines of business as well. And our goal is really to try to make sure that we deliver the best medical care to our customer’s injured employees.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:15] Amazing. And so, what are some of the trending or some of the things that you guys are seeing that are kind of a focus for some of the the customers that you carry right now?

Marcos Iglesias: [00:01:26] Yeah. So, in the past two years, as you know, a lot has happened, not only COVID, but labor shortages. And so, we’re very focused on helping injured employees regain full function so that they can go back to work, so that they feel better about themselves, they get over their injury, but they’re also able to contribute to what their employers need them to do. So, it’s a win-win for everybody.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:50] Absolutely. So, are you seeing anything shifting with more of this remote work in terms of injuries coming through? Or is it more kind of staying stagnant and kind of the same as before?

Marcos Iglesias: [00:02:01] Not necessarily. We see the same types of injuries, the same type of issues surrounding those injuries. It is a little bit more challenging for some employers to bring people back to the workplace, but not impossible, and we’re trying to help them do that.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:16] Yeah. Awesome. And I know you are presenting at this year’s RIMS Conference, so talk to me a little bit about the topic that you’re presenting on.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:02:23] So, in the foyer and I presented yesterday and we presented on engaging the injured employee in a holistic fashion to help them recover. So, the idea here is that, you know, we have a tremendous responsibility to those injured employees to help them, not just in terms of their medical condition, the injury that they came with, but everything else that’s going around them which contributes to the injury or to their recovery.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:02:53] So, I’m talking about things like they may be afraid of re-injury, they may be afraid of activity, they may have issues like they’re not sleeping well, so all these things that are not part of the injury but may be barriers to their recovery. We’re trying to set up processes, we’re trying to set up programs that identify those injured employees that are at risk, and then match them with a solution to try to help them out.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:24] Oh, that’s going to be really interesting because I imagine you have somebody who’s home on a work comp injury and there’s things that are then happening in their personal life on top of that, I’m sure there could be some – I’m going to say the word, but I might stumble over myself – catastrophic, like it kind of intensifies, basically, that injury.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:03:42] Yeah. Just think of it, you know, the focus may not be just the ankle sprain or the low back. Obviously, that’s a big part of that employee’s experience but so much else is going on. In the last year, they’ve had to worry about COVID. Oftentimes, they worry, am I going to lose my job? Will I be able to afford my next mortgage payment? How will I take care of my family? Things like that. And, oftentimes, what we’ve seen is that it’s those issues that become the real barrier to returning to function, not just at work, but in every aspect of their lives. So, it’s not just the ankle sprain, the back sprain, it’s some of these things and they just need some help getting over it.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:29] Yeah. So, it’s almost like, you know, you can kind of support them in a different way.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:04:33] Absolutely.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:33] Yeah. Getting to some of that emotional support, you know, kind of creating that sense of safety.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:04:39] Yeah. It’s emotional. It’s social. Some of the interventions might be making sure that they have transportation to get to work. So, a lot of things that we can do, in my view, I think it makes injured employees feel more cared for, somebody is listening to them, somebody is looking after them. And it’s a very rewarding experience for us.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:03] Yeah. Amazing. So, you know, in looking at your presentation – I didn’t know you presented yesterday – if there were, like, three areas or takeaways that you wanted the audience to be left with that they could bring back to their organization, what would those areas be?

Marcos Iglesias: [00:05:18] I think what we’ve been talking about, an injury is a concerning time for any employee, but there’s so many other things going on, so make sure you look at that employee holistically. And the best way of doing that is really by sitting down with them and listening. They’ll tell you usually what else is going on. They’ll tell you about some of these barriers. Which then gives you an opportunity not only to engage with them and make them feel listened to, but it gives you an opportunity to intervene and to help them out. So, that’s the first thing.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:05:52] One of the things that I give as a tip that I think no matter who you are, you’re a supervisor, you’re a medical provider, you’re a claim adjuster, a nurse, I always ask the employee, when do you think you’ll return to work? I call that the one question. Because their answer to that question is, not only highly predictive of when they do go back to work, but it may also uncover the real barrier for their not returning to work.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:06:19] So, for example, if I asked John, “When do you think you’ll return to work?” His answer is, “You know, Monday morning.” I’ll be less concerned than if John says in four weeks. That may be a risk factor. That may point to the fact that he’s not going to recover quickly. And then, my next question will be, “Why do you think it’ll take you four weeks?” And that might uncover the real barrier. Maybe John crashed his car or his car is totaled. He doesn’t have transportation to get to work. Now, that’s the barrier and not his neck pain.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:06:52] Yeah. Interesting. And I think there’s so much power in that dialogue and, like, active listening. Employees really appreciate that opportunity to have somebody who cares.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:07:02] Yeah. A sad statistic from my practice days many, many years ago tells us that doctors will usually interrupt the patient that they’re seeing within eight seconds. And I can tell you that a lot of patients don’t feel listened to by a host of people, by their doctor, by other care providers. So, we have an opportunity as a supervisor, as an employer, as a friend, as a claim professional, to just sit down, let them talk, let them tell us what’s going on, which then gives us that opportunity to hold their hand and bring them along.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:43] Yeah. And that helps with retention at the end of the day as well, when you’re giving that employee, you know, that opportunity to give some transparency and you’re creating that environment of safety where they can talk about it. It just goes so far in so many different ways, not only from getting them back to work, to your point, but just in them considering you that employer that cares and values you as that employee, it helps with that retention overall.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:08:09] Absolutely. It’s a holistic approach. At Travelers, we call it the Custom Care Approach. It’s the injured employee at the center because they’re the ones with the injury. They’re the ones with the claim. Of course, everybody else, you know, is part of it as well. And we try to support everyone, every stakeholder in every claim that we have.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:08:29] That’s the human back into the process, it sounds like. I love that.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:08:33] It’s what I like doing as a doctor.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:08:35] Oh, wonderful. It has been an absolute pleasure having you on the show. Thank you so much. If somebody wanted to get a hold of you and learn a little bit more about Travelers, you know, about the Custom Care Program, or anything that you do, or to connect with you further to learn a little bit more from you, how would they do that?

Marcos Iglesias: [00:08:49] Well, our travelers.com website has a host of information about what we do, not only in workers’ compensation, but in all of our lines of business. And if you’d like to get a hold of me, I’m sure you can find me on the website or on LinkedIn, and I’d be happy to get in touch with you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:09:08] Wonderful. Thank you again. It’s been a pleasure for taking time out of your busy schedule here at the conference. We appreciate having you on the show.

Marcos Iglesias: [00:09:15] Thanks so much, Jamie. A pleasure.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:21] Hi, everyone. Jamie Gassmann here, your host of Workplace MVP, broadcasting from Riskworld 2022’s Expo Hall in R3 Continuum’s booth. And with me, I have Dov Gardin from Regeneron. Welcome to the show.

Dov Gardin: [00:00:37] Thank you. Thank you, Jamie. Happy to be here.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:00:39] And tell me a little bit about what Regeneron does.

Dov Gardin: [00:00:43] Sure. Yeah. Regeneron is a pharmaceutical company. We’re probably most known these days for producing REGEN-COV, which is a therapy for severe COVID cases. And so, we’ve been providing that probably, about, the last-year-and-a-half and continue to provide it to patients in need.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:05] Wonderful. And so, what is your role at the company? What do you do?

Dov Gardin: [00:01:09] Sure. Yeah. I’m responsible for Global Business Resilience. And so, that really stretches across all the components related to continuity of operations, from how we detect events into risk management, crisis management, incident management in a business recovery, disaster recovery. So, it really runs the gamut of everything we do to make sure that we’re as prepared as possible for disruptive events. And when they do inevitably happen, as we all know they do, that we’re responding appropriately and minimizing impact on the business.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:01:41] Yeah. Wonderful. So, obviously, over the last year or a couple of years now, I guess, what did that look like for you in your role?

Dov Gardin: [00:01:49] So, that’s kind of an interesting question. Actually, I’ve only been with Regeneron for about a year. So, I had the opportunity to see three companies through COVID. Because I was at Allergan, which is a different pharmaceutical company, best known as the makers of Botox and other medical aesthetics products. So, I had been there for about four or five years and put the team together to manage COVID. And in the middle of that process, Allergan was acquired by AbbVie, so I spent a year at AbbVie as part of the transition. And then, moved out of AbbVie into Regeneron where I am now.

Dov Gardin: [00:02:29] So, yeah, really interesting. Three pharmaceutical companies in two years. I want to say, two of those transitions, I didn’t meet my boss at all, which is crazy. I mean, I did virtually, but not in-person. AbbVie, I never was at the site. A huge global pharmaceutical company, third largest right now. So, yeah, really kind of interesting experience to see the different yet related challenges that all three companies went through. And I’m actually speaking about that later today.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:02:58] Interesting. So, speaking of you speaking, talk to me a little bit about that presentation. What is it titled? And the content of it, like, what are you going to be talking about?

Dov Gardin: [00:03:09] Sure. Yeah. So, we’ll be in the Thought Leader Theater, and the focus is really when work from home is not an option with a focus on pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. And it’s really, you know, heavily focused on the surprises that we encountered when trying to manage through this very unique, very globally disruptive event, things that surprised us as prepared as you think you are, what didn’t work well and why. And then, also, we’ll present a couple of things that you can do to overcome or avoid the kinds of surprises that we saw.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:03:50] Yeah. Amazing. Would you say that some of the things you might be talking about, is it applicable to other maybe disruptions, too, or is it strictly just more around the pandemic?

Dov Gardin: [00:04:00] Yeah. It is. So, the lessons learned are really very much about how to prepare for and manage a crisis in general, any kind of crisis. And I mean, you know, when you think about disruptive events, you guys, R3, work with companies supporting how you get through disruption. There are always challenges and surprises. You know, business as usual is simple. It doesn’t mean it’s not hard. It means that we know what we’re doing. We know how the business is supposed to operate.

Dov Gardin: [00:04:30] But once you’re confronted with a chaotic, stressful, disruptive situation, a lot of what you had planned for, a lot of the ways of working used to go out the window. And so, a lot of what we’re going to be talking about in that session that we’ll be providing is, yes, it’s using COVID as sort of context, but there are lessons that should be applied in any disruption.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:04:52] Yeah. Because, you know, it’s inevitable that a disruption is going to happen. So, having a preparedness plan, knowing how you’re going to respond to it, how you’re going to support your people, all of those things matter, especially when you get into that moment.

Dov Gardin: [00:05:05] Yeah. And how leadership teams make decisions and come together to focus on the right thing, and not based on their functional expertise, I think, is the most important. It’s interesting. A lot of it has to do with combatting cognitive bias, which is a common theme in risk. Of course, it’s probably one of the number one issues with objectively understanding risk. But that applies to disruptive situations, crises, et cetera, as well.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:05:34] Yeah. Very interesting. So, if there were three takeaways or three key points you want your audience to be left with when they walk away from your presentation, what would those be?

Dov Gardin: [00:05:42] That’s an excellent question. I think the first is to recognize that you’re not going to have all the answers. There are going to be surprises. Don’t go into it thinking, “Oh, yeah. We’ve been through pandemics before,” to use COVID as an example. “We’ve been through supply disruptions before.” There will likely be specifics of that event that you did not plan for or you couldn’t have planned for. And anticipate surprises, which is a little bit of a weird thing to say, but I think what it means is go into the situation with an open mind.

Dov Gardin: [00:06:16] Number two is, you need to apply an appropriate crisis management decision making framework, where you’ve got the right people in the room, so that’s number one. Number two, everyone agrees on what the problem is. What is the problem statement for the business? What are we focusing on? And then, once you have that, you can then get into solution-ing or coming up with your strategies. I think senior leaders, especially, like to make quick decisions, solve problems very quickly without maybe having the best understanding of the problem or having agreement across the leadership team and what the problem is. So, I’d say that’s number two.

Dov Gardin: [00:06:50] And I think number three is, be open to being flexible. That’s what really allows you to be resilient. And by resilient, I mean not just surviving, but thriving. Coming out of that event even stronger than you were before.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:04] Yeah. Great. It sounds like a great presentation. I’m sure the audience is really going to appreciate the content, and knowledge, and information you’re sharing.

Dov Gardin: [00:07:12] I hope so. And it’s ten feet away from this booth.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:15] I know. I know. It’s great.

Dov Gardin: [00:07:17] So, you can hold the mic up if you want to hear it.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:20] That’s wonderful. Well, it’s been an absolute pleasure to talk with you.

Dov Gardin: [00:07:24] Likewise. Thank you.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:24] So, if somebody wanted to get a hold of you and hear a little bit more, maybe ask you questions about your presentation or just connect, how would they do that?

Dov Gardin: [00:07:31] LinkedIn is the best way, so Dov, spelled D-O-V, Gardin, G-A-R-D-I-N. Just LinkedIn, mention that you heard the podcast. And I’m always happy to connect with people to talk and kind of share insights and experiences.

Jamie Gassmann: [00:07:48] Wonderful. It’s been such a pleasure to have you on the show. Good luck at your presentation.

Dov Gardin: [00:07:52] Thank you. Thank you.

Outro: [00:07:58] Thank you for joining us on Workplace MVP. R3 Continuum is a proud sponsor of this show, and is delighted to celebrate most valuable professionals who work diligently to secure safe workplaces where employees can thrive.
