Trudy O’Brien / Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers, Inc.

Trudy O’Brien, Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers, Inc.

Assistant to the President/CEO, since 2002.  Member of an executive team with oversight and management of the organization’s programs and associated services for infants through adults with and without developmental disabilities.  Previously employed by United Way of Escambia County for nearly 12 years as Communications Manager before joining Capstone.  Also worked for Savan Advertising in St. Louis and TV stations in Cape Girardeau and Joplin, Missouri.  Current working on starting job training programs:  Capstone Pet Place (pet supply store) in Milton and the Barkery (bake pet treats) in Pensacola.

Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers, Inc.

Mission:  Capstone is committed to advancing the independence for children and adults with a spectrum of abilities and disabilities.

Vision:  Capstone’s vision is to be the premier provider of services to a spectrum of children and adults with all types of abilities and disabilities in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties.

History of Organization

For 65 years Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers (f/k/a United Cerebral Palsy of

Northwest Florida or UCP) has advocated for inclusion and opportunity for individuals of all ages, ethnicities, and gender, with developmental disabilities.  Since 1953, we have successfully developed and implemented cutting edge programs and services for children/students in our community who are primarily on Medicaid, low income, and have significant physical, medical, and cognitive disabilities.

Capstone planned, designed, and launched Capstone Academy Pensacola in 2004, the FIRST and ONLY inclusive charter school in Northwest Florida for infants to age five.  This program site hosts a public charter school, voluntary pre-kindergarten, early intervention therapies, and after school programs for children with and without developmental disabilities or delays.

Capstone opened another Capstone Academy in Milton in 2010.  Today, nearly 140 children are served at EACH campus (approximately 280 children annually).  During the past 14 years, over 2,600 infants and children have received services via both Capstone Academies.

In 2014/2015 Capstone announced to the community a new name – Capstone Adaptive Learning and Therapy Centers, Inc.  Our stakeholders have embraced Capstone’s name change.  For those served directly in Capstone programs, the new name no longer focuses on a disability, but on what one CAN do.  Due to growth and the expansion of Capstone services and programs the former name – UCP – no longer defined who we were nor those we served.

To better serve youth and adults in Santa Rosa County, we opened our sixth (6) group home and an adult day training program in Milton this year (2018).

Current Programs and Projects

In 2017 nearly 2,000 infants, children, youth, and adults with and without developmental disabilities (autism, autism spectrum, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, intellectual disabilities, etc.) and their families were assisted in Escambia and Santa Rosa counties through Capstone’s many programs.

Services include:

We are excited to announce the opening of our new youth/adult program in Milton.  The Milton training program at 5326 Stewart Street is called Student Skills Training Program and Capstone Pet Place.  Thanks to a grant from Pensacola Bay Area Impact 100 and individual donors, Capstone students will learn all aspects of running a retail store.  Students will acquire job and interpersonal skills desired by area businesses.  In addition, we will partner with local animal rescue organizations and shelters to host pet adoptions days and provide spay/neuter information to pet owners.

Another new program is Capstone Pet Barkery in Pensacola.  This is also a training program (2600 Fairfield Drive) students with disabilities to learn hard (job) and soft (interpersonal) skills to become employed in the community by making, baking, selling, and marketing natural pet treats.  Treats will be sold at local farmers’ markets, businesses, and Capstone Pet Place.

Adult Day Programs (Pensacola – 2912 North E Street and 2600 West Fairfield Drive):  Over 70 individuals are served at our 100% accessible facilities at two locations.  Adult Day Programs are open Monday through Friday.

We provide specialized health care, therapies and nursing services; skills training; and personal care for youth and adults with severe developmental disabilities.  Mobility services, critical to our adult population, prevent regression in physical capabilities, lessen skin breakdown, and decrease short-term (ER visits) and long-term (nursing home) medical costs.  Some of the care offered at our day programs include medical oversight, feeding, toileting, community integration, mobility, and addressing quality of life issues, socialization, and health/safety.

Families rely on Capstone to provide a day program that engages their adult children (most are medically and physically complex wheelchair users) while they are at work.  Capstone helps keep some people from institutionalization (nursing homes), thus decreasing costs to taxpayers and increasing quality of life for clients and their families.

The High School-to-Work Transition Program at the Transition Center (2600 West Fairfield Drive) provides students ages 14-22 with opportunities to develop appropriate social skills while continuing their educational experience.  Curriculum prepares students for adult life after graduation in which they are able to secure a job or volunteer service, thus becoming as independent as possible.

Most students attending one of our day programs require transportation to and from their program.  We have a fleet of over 20 vehicles, most of which are wheelchair accessible vans/buses.

Capstone owns and operates six wheelchair accessible group homes for 30 youth and adults to be part of their community and to live safely, play, learn, and receive the nursing/personal care services they need.

Our Children’s Therapy Clinics provide a one-of-a-kind “complete” therapy clinic for our Escambia (4901 West Fairfield Drive, Pensacola) and Santa Rosa County (5308 Stewart Street, Milton) area children, birth to 22 years old.  Our clinics include speech language pathologist, occupational, behavioral, and physical therapists working as a team to increase the infants’ and children’s communication, fine motor, gross motor, behavioral, and feeding/swallowing skills.

Milton Child Care Center is located on the Milton High School campus (6656 Park Avenue, Milton).  We provide a quality child-centered and developmentally appropriate curriculum and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) for over 50 infants to five year olds primarily from low-income families.

Capstone developed and operates the only two charter schools in Northwest Florida – Capstone Academy – for children ages three to six years old primarily diagnosed with autism or autism spectrum and other developmental disabilities.  The campuses are located in Pensacola (4901 West Fairfield Drive) and Milton (5308 Stewart Street).   Many of the children also receive physical, occupational, and/or speech therapies and behavioral services as part of their individual education plan (IEP).  Our Time After School and Summer School Child Care is for school-aged children with special needs.  Approximately 280 children are served each year at Capstone Academies.

Nursing oversight and care is provided at all Capstone day programs, thus allowing medically complex children, youth, and adults (who require nursing care) to attend programs where they engage in meaningful day activities, therefore realizing an improved quality of life.  RN/LPNs ensure each student/child receives medical care such as breathing treatments, injections, tube feeding, suctioning, repositioning, medication administration and supervision, etc.  Due to our clientele, ALL Capstone programs have access to our full-time/on-staff nurses.  Nurses are on call 24/7.

Capstone enjoys hosting nursing students from Pensacola Christian College (PCC) for over 25 years; future physicians from Florida State University’s College of Medicine (9 years); and most recently students from Keiser University’s Master of Science in Occupational Therapy (MSOT) Bridge Program.

Capstone’s partnerships with medical schools further enhances our mission of advancing the independence for children and adults with a spectrum of abilities and disabilities.  This is accomplished by exposing future nurses and doctors to the unique conditions and circumstances of our students.

Ken Coleman/Focus On The 5

Pod Guest Series Episode 1

Focus on the 5

“Focus on the 5” is dedicated to the insights and identity of 5%ers  (entrepreneurs, risk-takers, early adopters, business owners…)I go in detail on:
Why and how to market to 5%ers.
How to spot them in a crowd and the benefits of being able to.And I begin to open a door for each of you to better understand, and hopefully embrace, how you fit into this broader philosophy as 5, 15, 30 and 50%ers.The opportunities for companies and individuals who learn why they need to be focusing their time and energy on the 5%ers are immense.

The financial, spiritual and psychological benefits for every one of you to better understand this fundamental component of who you and those around you are, and the core of how we make decisions, is staggering.

5%ers are the trendsetters in all purchases, all industries, all decisions. It is not a choice they made, rather it is who they are.  Once you learn how to spot a 5%er who has embraced who they are, they stand out like a blinding light in a crowd.

This philosophy will change the way you do business. It will change the way you view choices and decisions. Those of you who are 5%ers and have not yet learned to embrace it, I believe this book and learning to understand yourself as a 5%er may very well save your life.

I can hardly wait to meet you, teach you and hear your story.

Dr. Girish / JABIL and Stan Harper/NAVAL SUPPLY SYSTEMS COMMAND/NAVSUP/NEX

OUR VISION

At Jabil, we empower the brands who empower the world – it’s our reason for being and the guiding force that’s driving us to become the most technologically advanced manufacturing solutions provider on the planet.  Whether we’re serving one of the world’s biggest and best known brands or the coolest tech startups, our resolve never wavers. We share common desires with these brands: to make the world a better, safer and cleaner place. Read more about Jabil..

OUR VALUE
To be successful in today’s world, we believe you need to work with trusted partners, who bring ingenuity, technology, big data and global reach to the table and empower you with accelerated innovation, global manufacturing agility, full supply chain orchestration and engineering excellence.  Jabil is your force multiplier and can help you deliver products and services to market in a fraction of the time, at a fraction of the cost while ensuring optimal customer experience.

At Jabil, we are a product solutions company focused on empowering brands that have their sights set on empowering the world – it’s our reason for being, and the guiding force driving us to become the most technologically advanced and most trusted in our field.  Whether we’re serving one of the world’s biggest and best-known brands or the coolest tech startups, our resolve never wavers. We share common desires and values with these brands: to make a difference by empowering a better, healthier, safer, and cleaner world, in all we do.

Change gets in the way – as the fourth Industrial Revolution looms, change is happening 10 times faster and at 300 times the scale – that’s roughly 3,000 times the impact of the first one. To stay relevant, deliver growth to stakeholders, and be in a position to empower a better world, brands must work with companies they trust to drive innovation at the speed of digital, be agile enough to move manufacturing workloads to where it makes business sense, leverage technology at a time when technology & engineering resources are scarce, and master the art of supply chain orchestration to ensure satisfaction – in an instant gratification/personalized everything, kind of world. That’s no small feat.

As your trusted product solutions partner, Jabil has carefully studied the drivers of this change, and how to best empower you, and found the following:

Accelerating technological change is permeating every vector of organizational value chains. Disruptions are causing disintermediation and creating new business models, shutting some companies out of their markets completely while opening doors for others. Digital technologies are driving massive transformations. And there is no end in sight. In fact, 60 percent of companies surveyed by McKinsey & Company believe that up to half their income will come from technology-enabled innovation by 2020.

Data analysis is now a science; companies pull data from everyone, everywhere and everything and apply powerful analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to turn that data into useful insights, actions and customer experiences.

At the same time, consumers devour new technology the second it becomes available at adoption rates never seen, driving consumer expectations to an all-time high.

Meanwhile, barriers to market entry for emerging competitors are at their lowest point ever.

Technology is changing everything, fast.

Geopolitical & economic shifts are causing great uncertainty for OEMs as they strive to understand the impact of Brexit, tax reform, treaties, foreign currency, debt rates, resource scarcity, and climate change as well as other political and policy swings. Additionally, the world’s economies are being rewritten in front of our eyes, as the center of economic gravity shifts. Market watchers, company analysts, supply chain managers, and economists are tasked with around-the-clock “what if” scenarios to keep up with each twist and turn.

Explosive demographic shifts add another layer of complexity because of the growing and aging population coupled with rapid urbanization. These two dynamics create mounting pressure on current infrastructure and talent pools, as well as healthcare and energy resources.  These factors are not helped by the ever-widening skills GAP in STEM fields.  All combined, these demographic pressures create a gap between what stakeholders expect and what companies can execute.

Welcome to the Digital Age! It’s a perfect storm of epic proportion.

In weathering this storm, our mission has become clear: to deliver value through 4 empowering sets of solutions:

  • Accelerated Innovation Solutions to help you stay relevant in a world of change.
  • Global Manufacturing Agility Solutions to insulate your business from political and/or policy uncertainty and get you closer to your customers/markets without compromising your bottom line.
  • Engineering Excellence with world-class engineers and capabilities to complement and collaborate with your team, to help you solve the toughest problems when translating an idea into a differentiated and manufacturable world-class product.
  • Supply Chain Orchestration Solutions to help manage and mitigate risk across your supply chain, uncover opportunities and ultimately deliver superior financial performance and optimum customer experiences.

Jabil delivers all this value to empower you, your brand and your customers.

Lacie Bowden/ A Legal Breeze
Owner/Lawyer

A true local, Mrs. Bowden was raised on Pensacola Beach with her mother, step father, younger sister and younger brother. She attended Pensacola Beach Elementary School and Gulf Breeze Middle School and High School. She attended Pensacola Junior College, now Pensacola State College, full time her senior year of high school as part of the dual enrollment program. After graduating from high school, she attended Florida State University on an academic scholarship. While attending FSU, she was employed and was on the Level Co. Dance Team. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mass Communications and a minor in English. She attended law school at Barry University School of Law in Orlando. While attending Barry, she received her honors certificate in children and family law. After graduating law school, she took the Florida Bar Exam and became licensed to practice law in Florida. She then began her first position as a practicing attorney at the Office of the Public Defender in Escambia County. As a Public Defender, Mrs. Bowden practiced criminal defense, where she represented over 2000 defendants. She gained great experience in and out of Court, handling misdemeanor and felony cases. After three years as an attorney at the Office of the Public Defender, she began her career in private practice at a small, local firm. There, she practiced Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury and Wills, before deciding to open her own firm, Lacie Bowden Law.

Mrs. Bowden lives in Pensacola with her husband and their four pets. She still enjoys many of the same activities that she grew up doing, including lounging on the beach, surfing, paddle boarding, boating, fishing and strolling the beach on her bike. She loves spending time with family and friends, who are all a huge part of her life. She also enjoys dancing, photography and traveling.

From the time Mrs. Bowden was in elementary school, she always had an interest in becoming an attorney. Her parents divorced when she was very young, so Family Law had been something she wanted to do from very early on. She wanted to help everyone involved in a divorce, whether it was the parents, children or extended family. She truly understands the aspects of divorce, which gives her a special connection with her clients in that particular area of law.

It is Mrs. Bowden’s passion to help others, whether it in Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury or Wills. And, it is a pleasure and commitment for her to serve the people of the community that she loves.

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

  • Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.
  • Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We have produced 4 editions of this print magazine. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips. Our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication, however the magazine is currently on hold as we explore graphic designers. Our latest edition can still be found on our website.
  • Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2018, our conference will be held on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at Sanders Beach.
  • Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

Weeds are one of the biggest hassles in Arizona. The constant headache of the ever-popping weeds will become a thing of the past when you choose POPPY to spray your property.

Creating a sterile soil where weeds will not grow is the goal. We use a pre-emergent product that prevents weeds from growing. A pre-emergent application twice a year will keep your yard pristine and weed-free all year long. We also provide an application that eliminates existing weeds.

In addition to preventing and eliminating weeds, we offer a variety of landscaping services. Here are just a few:

  • Yard Maintenance
  • Tree Trimming
  • Brush Removal
  • Irrigation (new/repairs on existing)
  • Planting
  • Sod/Turf
  • Overseeding
  • Rocks/Gravel (all sizes)
  • Pavers

We’ll keep your property perfectly manicured with a maintenance program designed just for you. We’ll beautify your yard monthly, quarterly, or whatever suits your needs.

POPPY pays special attention to the details of every project to ensure the complete satisfaction of each customer. Our goal is to enhance the appearance of your home or business, so you can keep your weekends.

OUR MISSION

Guns To Hammers is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides our wounded veterans with Americans With Disabilities (ADA)-compliant remodeling and renovation services, making their homes easily accessible, helping them live independent and manageable lives.

After founding H-Towne & Around Remodelers, Inc., a successful remodeling company in Houston, Texas, founder, JR Smith, decided to redirect his time, money and energy toward this mission. As a former U.S. Marine, coupled with some guilt that he was able to leave the USMC unhurt and able-bodied (unlike many), JR feels he has a huge sense of responsibility to his wounded brothers and sisters who are now living at home — many of them in need of various home improvements.

Your donation will help make this happen, sponsoring veterans across the United States, transforming homes — opening doors and possibilities — to our veterans who need it most. Many of our veterans made huge sacrifices to protect our freedoms — it’s our responsibility to ensure they are never left behind. Donate, today.
