Barbara McClure wakes up each morning passionate about going to work at a place that improves lives and inspires futures every day! She has been the Executive Director of a Tucson social service nonprofit called IMPACT of Southern Arizona, for ten years. What is it that keeps you passionate about your role Barbara?

Barbara has been a visionary and planner with decades of experience as a small business owner and in nonprofit leadership; her innovative ideas and strategic thinking, along with a talent for bringing the community together, has helped grow IMPACT five-fold in a very short time. Her talents and interests are diverse but all center around helping people, improving the community, bolstering education, building capacity and sustainability, being vocal about the rights and conditions of others, experiencing art, nurturing all inhabitants of your garden, and enjoying life to the fullest.

And now Barbara is about to experience another exciting chapter in her life with hosting a brand-new Radio Show Podcast here on the Tucson Business RadioX Network starting in November.

IMPACT of Southern Arizona is a 20 – year old social service nonprofit stabilizing families and seniors, and moving people out of poverty. IMPACT’s programs are designed to stretch household budgets so earned income can be spent on necessities such as improved housing conditions, fuel to get to work, utilizes, and needed medical attention and prescriptions.  Its clients are your neighbors! People come to IMPACT because it is a welcoming place where they are always treated with dignity and respect, and where they find resources, referrals, coaching, and help to attain the skills that can move them forward into self-sufficiency.

Barbara grew up in Pasadena CA, moved to Long Beach for college, got married and started our family then moved to Seattle area ten years later. Took our youngest son on an 11-month motorhome trip to get to Tucson – Homeschooled for 10th grade.

We vacationed at a rustic cabin when I was growing up, where we had no phone or television; and spent all our time outside fishing, hiking, horseback riding, listening to old radio shows, playing pool, reading comic books from the local small grocer, and using our imaginations all day long. I always admired the superheroes who defended people and cities like Gotham and Metropolis, so when our three boys were born, we named them after familiar character: Colin (Bryce for an overlay of Bruce Wayne, Kent, and Parker. Our first grandchild was born last year, and as in the family tradition, named Logan, after the Wolverine. I used to always tell them they were my superheroes – and they still are today!

Barbara loves working with numbers and has always loved math and the organization of things, so accounting seemed perfect, but I soon realized that I if I became a CPA I would have to spend many months inside doing tax returns, and that did not appeal to me as a long–term career! I have a great imagination and enjoy creating things, so thought I should find a better path that might nurture that side of my personality. I was working in the shipping industry in SoCal at the time and fell in love with import and export, so shifted my majors to Marketing and International Business. Those were wonderful fits, and I imagined graduating and moving to the largest port on the planet, in Germany; then, I met my future husband and things took a different turn.

A little bit about how Barbara got into Nonprofit work:

All along with my husband and I were always involved in nonprofits and community volunteer opportunities, and often said it was too bad we could not make a living doing those things we loved so much. Leadership roles in PTO, Boy Scouts, Historical Societies, Junior League, Elks, Rotary and more. Then when we moved to Tucson I looked for a local opportunity to impact my community. A Board position was about to open at IMPACT, and my local bank branch manager, Peggy Smoot, suggested I would be very passionate about getting involved in the mission work there. I worked in the Food Bank.

There are thousands of nonprofits in Tucson. What makes IMPACT Unique is that they bring the community together to stabilize families and move people out of poverty. Our true success lies in partnering with a large number of businesses, agencies, social clubs and other nonprofits. We invest $2.5 million in the community each year, and we do it all with a lean staff of amazing professionals supported by more than 170 volunteer shifts each week! We have put great systems in place to run efficiently, effectively and with a commitment to sustainability and integrity, protecting the community’s investment in our work, striving for perfect audits, being innovative, building capacity and most importantly – treating everyone with dignity and respect. We are an award–winning nonprofit with numerous nods to incredible customer service. Our clients are your neighbors… We improve lives and inspire futures of people living in Southern AZ.

So, IMPACT is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and you have been at the helm half that time. Share with me the things IMPACT has accomplished over the years, and the things you have planned for this celebratory year.

Barbara Eden

Barbara Eden (born Barbara Jean Morehead, August 23, 1931) is an American film, stage, and television actress, and singer, best known for her starring role of “Jeannie” in the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie.

Eden began her television career as a semi-regular on The Johnny Carson Show in 1955 She also made featured appearances on shows such as The West Point Story, Highway Patrol, Private Secretary, I Love Lucy, The Millionaire, Target: The Corruptors!, Crossroads, Perry Mason, Gunsmoke, December Bride, Bachelor Father, Father Knows Best, Adventures in Paradise, The Andy Griffith Show, Cain’s Hundred, Saints and Sinners, The Virginian, Slattery’s People, The Rogues, and the series finale of Route 66. She guest-starred in four episodes of Burke’s Law, playing different roles each time. She was an uncredited extra in the movie The Tarnished Angels with Rock Hudson, in partnership with 20th Century Fox studios. She then starred in the syndicated comedy TV series How to Marry a Millionaire, based on the 1953 film of the same name. The list goes on and on!

Her last film for 20th Century Fox was The Yellow Canary (1963). She left Fox and began guest-starring in television shows and acting in films for MGM, Universal, and Columbia. She played supporting roles over the next few years, including The Brass Bottle and 7 Faces of Dr. Lao.

Gary Clarke

Gary Clarke (born Clarke Frederick L’Amoreaux; August 16, 1933) is an American actor best known for his role as Steve Hill in the NBC western television series The Virginian with James Drury and Doug McClure.

Clarke began his screen career with the 1958 film Dragstrip Riot, recalling that agent Byron Griffith, who had seen him perform in Glendale, arranged for an audition that eventually led to his filling the lead role. Clarke recalled:

I drove from San Gabriel to Hollywood and read for the part, and I got in as a member of the good gang. I went back to work the next day and my agent called me again and he said, ‘Gary, they have just lost the lead in the movie. Can you get down here?’ Yes! So I … went home [from work] and changed and went down, and I read every day for five days. I didn’t go back to work, I just kept calling in sick.

He went on to work in other films, including How to Make a Monster, and Missile to the Moon (both 1958), Date Bait (1960), and Passion Street, U.S.A. (1964).  He has said he was a contract player at Universal Pictures.

In the 1960-1961 season, he appeared as Dick Hamilton in the single-season NBC television series Michael Shayne, based on the fictional private detective character created by Brett Halliday, opposite Richard Denning as the title character.  Afterward, he appeared as Tad Kimball, a friend of the character Jess Harper, played by Robert Fuller, in the episode “The Fatal Step” of the NBC Western series Laramie.

Clarke played Steve Hill in the cast of the long-running TV Western series The Virginian, remaining on the show from 1962 to 1964. His last series as a cast-member was the 1967 ABC Western Hondo, playing Captain Richards.

Clarke said in an interview that his friend and co-star Steve Ihnat and he wrote the screenplay for director Ted V. Mikels’ film Strike Me Deadly (1963), though the film’s credits list only Ihnat and Mikels. Later that decade, Clarke under his birth name wrote several scripts for the NBC espionage sitcom Get Smart, which introduced the running character Hymie the Robot. All but one of his six produced scripts for the series(“Appointment in Sahara”) is about Hymie.

In the 1980s and 1990s, he wrote and produced television public-service announcements including “Youth at Risk”, narrated nonfiction short films including “Promoting Healthy Behavior”, and appeared in TV series including Dynasty and The Young Riders, in which he had a four-episode recurring role. His films in the 2010s include The Paperboy (2012) and Parkland (2013).

In 2014, the production company L’Amoreaux/Bartlett/Race/Thomas sought actors for an independent TV pilot, Bandits, and Tadpoles, written by Bartlett and Thomas and directed by Clarke, about a young boy whose daydreams put him in the American Old West of the Owen Wister novel The Virginian. It filmed June 26–30, 2014, near Austin, Texas, under the title Billy and the Bandit, with a cast including James Drury and Roberta Shore, from Clarke’s old series The Virginian; 11-year-old Jordan Elsass as Billy; Ava L’Amoreaux and Donny Boaz as his parents; and Buck Taylor as a ranch foreman.

Personal and corporate advertising. I started my business in Los Angeles in 2000, developing websites, professional headshots, and photography, doing bios for actors and writers. Background in entertainment, working on numerous television productions, feature films doing background, stunt, and stand-in which led to the membership into the Screen Actors Guild. This led to the development of personal PR packaging for acting agencies, publicity firms, and development of private individuals that were starting in the fields of entertainment

Was just appointed to the SAG/AFTRA board as the representative from the southern Arizona region. Currently, we are working to move more union production into the Southern region of Arizona, which is becoming more lucrative for production to migrate from NY or Los Angeles.

With our new board members in the Southern Region, we are looking to start a conservatory, Arizona Wild Kraft Entertainment, which will function under SAG/AFTRA sanction to bring education and awareness of not just the rules and regulations of set work and within the contexts of business practices, but the accepted principles of etiquette while being on-set, in an interview, or while auditioning for a role. Professional workshops are being planned in the future, and these will be open to non-union participants as well.

Daryl Mallett is the Chairman of the Arizona Film Expo, an award-winning actor, producer, writer and a partner at Caribou Moving Pictures LLC.  Daryl is a Christian and father of three beautiful children.  During this podcast, Daryl and Mark talked about the Independent Film Industry here in Tucson and the financial ramifications of that but before we do, your own career as an actor in both film and Stage has been quite diverse. Carmady’s People: The Case of the Reluctant Major (1986), “Star Trek: The Next Generation” (1987- 94),  Then some Star Trek’s (Star Trek VI): The Undiscovered Country (1991), “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” (1993-99).

Daryl was the Producer on short film Retro–causality (2019), Assistant to the Producers on The Message (2004) and Associate Producer on Illusion (2005) and currently serving as writer and producer on a dramatic TV series in development called “Falcon Field”, based on his history book of the same name, in development.

Daryl has won a few awards, including an award-winning stage actor appearing in over a dozen productions, including “Pirates of Penzance” for the Carson Civic Light Opera and won a Drama-Logue Award and an Ebenezer Award for his performance in “A Christmas Carol” (1991).)

As an author, Daryl has published 19 books, has edited over 50 books and has a few more coming in the next two years.
 He also heads up something very important for the State of Arizona and it’s happening right here in Tucson.

While actors and crew in Hollywood can be picky and choosy about their shooting locations, actors and crew in Arizona tend to view the entire state as local. Also, since attracting financing from outside the state, many here are willing to travel throughout the state to work on projects and assist each other. Although this is awesome and admirable, there exists a great need for better, centralized communication within the state film industry so we can know what is happening throughout Arizona.

The Arizona Film Expo will be a business exposition and conference for Arizona filmmakers, actors, directors, producers, writers, and crew members to:

  • Network: Get together with the greatest number of Arizona (and external) film industry professionals at once;
  • Disseminate and Gather Information: Find out and tell what is being worked on throughout our state and who/what resources are available here;
  • Build: Enlist support and financing from colleagues, businesses and other people in the greater Arizona community;
  • Educate: Workshops, how-tos, panels, and programming;
  • Show Off: Show the greater Arizona community, Hollywood and the rest of the country that we’re still here and we’re still a place to come and make movies;
  • Buy/Sell: Part of the expo includes tables and booths for vendors. We will also have agents, managers and distributors in attendance, have pitch sessions and more.

The event will consist of trade show floor and display tables for vendors and industry professionals; cities and towns; tourist attractions; supporting industries; chambers of commerce; economic development officials and more.

I began my career in the life insurance industry in 1978; many firms were not hiring women to be in sales in that male-dominated field. After several attempts, and not giving up, I found a major life insurance company with a young general agent who not only gave me the chance I needed but was huge support over the years I worked with him. In 2005, after working for other companies, I started Sandbrook Group to better serve my clients, who are largely small business owners.  In 2017, I further created a signature program for those same clients to do succession planning and their eventual exit from their business, either voluntarily or involuntarily- something that is largely overlooked in this market.  I also assist them in getting their business “sale ready” if their goal is to sell their business as an exit strategy,
