Researchers recently asked a bunch of fitness pro’s from around the world to name the best exercise. The Fat Guy said sex. Dr Fitness guessed swimming. But we were both wrong.

Burpees or squat thrusts got an unusually large amount of votes because that exercise engages a lot of muscle groups. Squats got some votes as did interval training. But the exercise on most people’s list was….wait for it…brisk walking for 30 minutes a day 5 days a week.

The thought behind brisk walking as the best exercise was that it was easy to do, you don’t need any expensive equipment, people who walked were able to stay compliant over long periods of time, the injury risk was minimal and if you regularly walked at a brisk enough pace you can attain your fitness and weight loss goals. So go for a walk today to celebrate this discovery. What is your favorite exercise?

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some facts about walking that will help inspire you to get moving. I use my FitBit everyday and on days when I don’t make plans to exercise i walk about 4000 steps. I have to make a concerted effort to go for a walk in order to hit the 10,000 steps everyone says you should walk each day. FYI every 2000 steps you walk equals a mile. In America we walk about half as much as we should. The Swiss walk about 9000 steps a day and in Japan they walk about 7000 steps a day. So make an effort to walk a little  bit more throughout each day. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how too much sitting each day can kill you. A real big, long term study from the American Cancer Society has shown that people who sit for 6 or more hours each day are at a higher risk of premature death. That is even if they exercise. So it is important to get up throughout the day and walk around. Get a treadmill for your office and walk at a slow pace. Stand more. Whenever you are on the phone get up and pace around the room. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Steve Bordley  to discuss his TrekDesk. Steve says that he was recently nominated for an award for his desk at CES. This amazingly large workspace is 72″ x 34″ and fits over the treadmill that you already own that is gathering dust in your garage.  According to Dr Fitness this will change the way you work. In his perfect world workers will move from cubicles to treadmill desks like the TrekDesk. Steve explained that by walking at a slow 1 mph pace all day long you can burn a significant amount of calories. For example sitting down burns about 15 calories an hour – standing burns about 50 calories an hour and walking at 1 mph can burn over 100 calories an hour. And at that non-strenuous slow pace you barely even notice you are doing anything – you’re not tired or sweating. It’s even better for your back than slouching over your computer all day.  All you listeners who work at home and want to lose weight – you have to check this out. To learn more please go to www.trekdesk.com

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to lose weight  while you work with a trek desk. As Dr Jim Levine from the Mayo Clinic talks about the NEAT method for losing weight – humans are meant to move. So if you can create ways to stand up and stay moving throughout your day you can lose weight pretty easily and quickly. This kind of all day movement does not have to be vigorous it can be very casual and you will still burn lots of calories throughout the day. A friend of our Steve Bordley has come up with a TrekDesk. This workspace sits over the treadmill you have collecting dust in your garage. You just set the desk over the treadmill and do your work while walking at 1 mph all day long. So eat up and lose weight as long as you stay moving. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share how to burn more calories each day. Here are some easy ways to burn extra calories each day. Park far away. My dream is that mall or grocery store park lots will have signs posted at throughout the lot tell you how many calories you’re burning if you walk to the entrance from that point. Kind of like those signs at amusement parks that tell you how long your wait is from that point. Going for a walk at lunch will burn extra calories. At home set a timer and speed clean your house – you get a double bonus a cleaner house and a quick cardio fitness workout. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
