In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to choose the right egg for you. There are so many egg choices – which do you choose – egg whites, brown eggs, designer anti-oxidant infused eggs, farm fresh eggs, or store brands. Comparing the cost of the most expensive to the cheapest can be sometimes double. Dr Fitness says for the best value buy the store brand white eggs – that’s right go with the cheapest eggs. If you want to use only the whites – separate them yourself and save some money. Brown eggs have the same nutrition as white – they just cost more. And grocery store eggs can be safer than the eggs some guy is selling from the back of his truck. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Hamilton, StacieAn Atlanta native, Stacie Hamilton is a Social Worker in the Cardiovascular section of Emory University Hospital – Midtown.  She received a degree in Social Work from the University of Georgia in 1994, and is only three months from completing her Masters in Social Work at Georgia State University.  When she’s not trying to arrange haircuts for her patients, Stacie provides a wealth of other resources for them, and advises families to be prepared as loved ones age.  She suggests that support structures be identified, and that legal documentation, such as living wills and powers of attorney be put in place.  That way, when the time comes, the family is not operating in “panic” mode.  Stacie can be reached through Emory’s Social Services department at (404) 686-8137, or visit them on the web at www.emoryhealthcare.org.

Duff, JamieJamie Duff has been a social worker for a long time.  In fact, she will tell you she was born into social work.  From an early age, people have confided in her, and come to her for advice and counsel.  So it was only natural that Jamie made a career out of it.  She received a BS in Social and Behavioral Services from University of Alabama-Birmingham in 1992.  She went on to complete her Masters in Social Work at Clarke Atlanta University.  Jamie is a general medical Social Worker at Emory University Hospital – Midtown.  Jamie’s advice to patients and their families is to investigate and purchase a good long term care insurance policy to help cover the high cost of services that will likely be needed as an individual ages.  Jamie can be reached through Emory’s Social Services department at (404) 686-8137, or visit them on the web at www.emoryhealthcare.org.

On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on good friend Carla Birnberg aka MizFitOnline. Carla is an award winning author and fitness trainer. Her blog is popular and informative – she is even part of the Oprah Virtual Digital Blogging Network. Today Carla answered about a dozen fitness questions we received from the Twitterverse. Here is a quick recap of some of her answers: never stretch cold, attitude is everything, pay attention to your rate of perceived exertion, try swimming for people with knee problems, consistency is critical with your cardio, beef jerky is a great power snack, identify your specific language of encouragement – everyone needs support a little differently, and remember for good health you must: stretch, do your cardio, lift weights and eat clean. Thanks to: @fabfattieshan, @carole_hicks, @mrsfatass, @jewliagoulia, @exhotgirl, @bwjen, @natburleson, @nomorebacon, @gemfit and @eatwithoutguilt and the many other Twitter fans that we couldn’t get to. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share their favorite healthy tailgating recipe swaps. For that big batch of loaded nachos you love swap out baked chips for regular, low fat cheese for full fat and add more veggies to the mix. For chicken wing lovers use white meat chicken breast tenders with your own breading – our good buddy Lisa Hungry-Girl Lillien uses crushed FiberOne cereal – then bake those bad boys instead of frying them.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Steve Bordley  to discuss his TrekDesk. Steve says that he was recently nominated for an award for his desk at CES. This amazingly large workspace is 72″ x 34″ and fits over the treadmill that you already own that is gathering dust in your garage.  According to Dr Fitness this will change the way you work. In his perfect world workers will move from cubicles to treadmill desks like the TrekDesk. Steve explained that by walking at a slow 1 mph pace all day long you can burn a significant amount of calories. For example sitting down burns about 15 calories an hour – standing burns about 50 calories an hour and walking at 1 mph can burn over 100 calories an hour. And at that non-strenuous slow pace you barely even notice you are doing anything – you’re not tired or sweating. It’s even better for your back than slouching over your computer all day.  All you listeners who work at home and want to lose weight – you have to check this out. To learn more please go to www.trekdesk.com
