A native of Seattle, Dave Mason is a graduate of the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University and holds a Master’s Degree in History from Durham University in England.  He started his teaching career at Mountlake Terrace High School in Seattle, Washington, teaching there for three years before his first tenure in Tucson at Catalina Foothills High School for nine – after which he joined San Miguel’s parent Cristo Rey Network in 2008.

Within Cristo Rey, Dave taught as a Social Studies Teacher and Dean of Curriculum and Instruction at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities before moving to the Cristo Rey National Office in Chicago in 2011 to serve as Director of School Support. He returned to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities in 2014 for his first stint as a Principal before returning to Tucson as President and Principal (eventually CEO) of San Miguel High School in 2016.

About The Business:

San Miguel High School is a Catholic, Lasallian learning community, empowering youth from underserved families through the integration of Christian values, rigorous academics, and practical work experience, educating the whole student for college, career, and fulfilling life.

San Miguel High School opened in 2004 in order to create a learning community where students from families of limited financial means have the opportunity to develop to their full potential. San Miguel is located in Tucson’s economically depressed south side where fifty percent of adult residents do not have a high school education and forty-two percent earn less than $25,000 per year.

At San Miguel, students take a full college preparatory course load while simultaneously holding internships, working in corporations, and earning nearly forty percent of their school tuition. The Corporate Work-Study Program (CWSP) at San Miguel gives students the opportunity to form new identities as citizens and professionals who have bright futures.

ATDC Radio: Take 5 – Georgia HealthTech Companies Share Their Stories

July 24, 2020 by angishields

About Your Host

Jane McCracken returns to ATDC as a Startup Catalyst, having started her career here many years ago. She then moved into venture capital and investment banking both in the United States and Europe before joining an early-stage, medical diagnostics company as chief financial officer.  During her time there, she raised $60 million and completed eight international acquisitions. The company was listed on both the London and Oslo stock exchanges.

Jane then worked with two venture-backed companies.  She joined the founders of an online travel company as CEO, and took it from startup to the world’s second-largest hotel booking site before Travelocity acquired it. At the request of her venture investors, Jane then joined a computer games developer as CEO and turned around the faltering enterprise before it was sold to a NASDAQ-listed games company.

Most recently, Jane was CEO of an oncology-focused clinical research company, which grew from startup to a multinational firm with $15 million in annual revenue and offices across Europe and the United States.  The company was financed through its own cash flow and was sold in early 2012 to a larger clinical research organization.

Jane continues to work with fast growing companies — in interim and full-time positions — as a consultant, board member, and angel investor. In addition, Jane has served on boards for public and private companies, as well as government-related and non-profit organizations. She is a frequent speaker and panelist at conferences, companies, and universities and is an active volunteer in her community. Jane obtained her bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University and her master’s degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

BRX Pro Tip: Make More Friends

Stone Payton: [00:00:00] And we are back with BRX Pro Tips Stone Payton and Lee Kantor here. Lee, you know I’ve said for years when I’m talking to prospective studio partners, we’ll handle all the technical stuff, we’ll show you how to make this platform work, so that you really are helping people and making money. All I need you to do is make friends and press record. Well, let’s talk about making friends for both our studio partners and our client host.

Lee Kantor: [00:00:26] Well, a lot of people believe, and I certainly believe that people buy from people that they like, that they know and like. So, part of that is, how do you create an environment that people will know and like you? So, how do you make them your friend? And why is that important to make people your friend? Our platform is a great vehicle to make more friends because all we do every day is help people tell their story. We give them an opportunity to tell their story. We help. We’re very useful in that regard. We’re positive. We’re a problem solver. We help them create content. We don’t do anything negative. We’re not the ones that are telling bad news. We’re not the ones that are kind of humiliating folks and embarrassing them in order to get more attention. All we’re doing every day is just helping people.

Lee Kantor: [00:01:25] So, when you’re that useful, and you’re that positive, and you solve problems for other people, it’s easy to become friends with us. And what happens is when you’re friends with more and more people, those people tell their friends. So, these behaviors just kind of multiply on themselves, and it’s attracting more people to you. So, it’s important: listen more, let your actions speak for yourself, and it’s more powerful, we believe, to sing the praises of other people and hold them up than it is to talk about ourselves. So, when you behave in a manner that serves other people, that helps other people, you’re going to attract those kinds of people to you, you’ll have more friends, and then you will have more business.
