Conscious Capitalism Takeover

On this CEO Exclusive Radio, host Soyini Coke discusses what it will take in order for all companies to embrace the Conscious Capitalism way of doing business. She also talks about features the infrastructure needs in order to help businesses who have made the commitment:

Realistic—I’ve been bringing up the dark side of human behavior in my conversations about conscious capitalism lately. I think it’s critical to have an approach to helping business implement with real people. How do you create a conscious culture in the face of people’s natural tendency to gossip? How do you deal with ethical failures? Implementation has to effectively address non-conscious capitalism. Enough with the butterflies and rainbows, already.

Authentic—Effective implementation has to get underneath the impulse for social performance. I want to look like I have everything together. So do you. So does everyone. But, if implementation of conscious capitalism devolves into good PR, the movement will not realize its potential. Here’s another place where metrics will be incredibly helpful.

Accessible—Conscious Capitalism needs to avoid a club mentality or the specter of elitism. Full market adoption by definition means that this approach is for everyone. Small businesses, large businesses. Rural farmers and city bankers. Hospitals, schools, manufacturers, and every industry you can think of. Fortune 100 CEOs and business school students. Answering the question of how to make implementation available to the masses is a key issue to address.

Doug_PisikDoug Pisik is an Atlanta-based artist who specializes in wood. He creates sculpture, turnings, abstract wall art and boxes with complex designs for which he is primarily known.

Most of Pisik’s work is composed of unique geometric patterns generated out of highly contrasting woods fashioned together with a technique he perfected and calls “Through-Pattern Construction.” This technique allows the complex patterns to pass from the outside through to the inside of his boxes and art panels ensuring every facet is finely decorated.

Pisik primarily avoids dyes and stains and instead continuously searches for woods with naturally contrasting colors and tones to accent his work. Some of his pieces are constructed with over a dozen species of woods and are composed of over a thousand pieces which appear to be seamlessly joined together into a solid composition. He often finishes his pieces in natural oils and waxes so the original feel of the wood is not lost, but is instead accentuated.

Pisik has received awards in a number of juried exhibits of national artists, been part of a dozen museum exhibitions, and accepted large commissions including several from Home Depot and the Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre. He is classified as a “Master Woodworker” from the Woodworker’s Guild of Georgia. His work is sold in numerous galleries and at the High Museum of Art.

Supply Chain Now Radio, Episode 52:
“Update on Congressional Action on U.S. Infrastructure Needs”

Congressman_Ferguson_headshotCongressman Drew Ferguson is a proud resident of West Point whose family roots in the West Georgia area are several generations deep. He attended the University of Georgia and gained early acceptance to the Medical College of Georgia. After graduating with a degree in dental medicine, he moved back to his hometown and established a successful family dental practice. In 2008, Congressman Ferguson was elected mayor of West Point and was at the forefront of attracting and keeping jobs in his community. By lowering taxes, eliminating government barriers and reforming education, he led a community in economic ruin back to life. Today, a wide range of new businesses and industries call West Point and the surrounding area home. Led by KIA Motors, automotive suppliers and related businesses, 16,000 new jobs have been created so far. Congressman Ferguson came to Washington to apply the lessons he learned revitalizing West Point to creating policies that once again make America the most competitive place to do business. Just as important as the creation of jobs, Congressman Ferguson wants to remove barriers that prevent those in poverty from moving into the middle class. Smart and effective welfare entitlement reform that actually helps people move ahead rather than trapping them in a cycle of poverty is the first step. Congressman Ferguson believes these problems cannot simply be regulated away, but should look for solutions that get government out of the way of American innovation growth. This is as much a moral issue as it is a practical matter. Congressman Ferguson is the Chief Deputy Whip for House Republicans. He also serves on the Committee on Ways and Means.
