Brook Franklin / Lashout Cosmetics

Brook Franklin, a Licensed Esthetician and Makeup artist originally from Northridge, California has always had a passion for the “Glitz & Glam” Lifestyle. She attended The School of Performing Arts in Studio City, California at the age of 7 and began studying modern dance, song interpretation, modeling, and acting, where she grew to love all aspects of the entertainment industry.  In 1994 her mother decided to move the family to Atlanta, GA where she has resided ever since, making it her second home. As a young teen, Brook was the go to girl for all the newest makeup trends among her peers.  After high school she worked in a few corporate positions and finally found her way back to the beauty industry when she accepted the Retail Team Leader position at “The Aveda Institute” in Buckhead and gained over 8 years experience working there and at other Aveda concept Salons and Spas throughout the city of Atlanta. She developed a passion for makeup and skincare and saw a void in the beauty industry and at that time she enrolled and completed the skincare program at the International School of Skin and Nail care in January, 2007 and has been licensed by the state of Georgia since 2008.

Working at some of the top spas in Atlanta, Brook has also been certified in Chemical Peels, Microdermabrasion, Cellulite Reduction, Micro-current (ultra tighten and tone), L.E.D. Treatments, Laser Hair Removal, IPL Treatments, as well as been trained by the top eyelash extension company, Extreme Lashes, and she is always seeking the newest and highest quality services to provide to her clients, which is one of the most important things to her.  After learning about the importance of healthy skin, Brook sought out ways to incorporate a makeup line that embodies the same values and concepts.

How will opportunities in Georgia be affected by the changing landscape of healthcare? This question concerns practically every small business across the country. In this edition, we are joined by the Director of Supplier Diversity from one of the top medical institutions in the nation—Mr. Todd Gray, of Grady— and by an MBE that is capitalizing on a burgeoning field in healthcare/pharma— Alita Anderson, MD of Eubio Medical, a medical communications firm.

The opportunities, according to Grady, are great. In the next two years alone, Grady plans on creating 132 jobs, and Gray expects the minority inclusion on that to be 30%– an exceptional number for any organization. Grady plans on doing this through several initiatives, including a GMSDC partnership and through expanding the list of services and products that it will pull from (marketing, IT, untraditional suppliers, GOPs, etc.). His dialogue teems with advice such as:

  • Remember Healthcare is NOT fee-driven, but all about quality outcome
  • Think about strategic partnerships before setting your sights on a large bid
  • 2nd tier does not mean 2nd class
  • And consider how supplier rationalization factors in

On the other side of the field of medical/healthcare, meet Alita Anderson, MD. Alita found a need and turned it into an opportunity for her small business, Eubio Medical. In the growing field of healthcare, there are so many moving parts that the need for a clear voice is essential, and an overarching, clear vision is imperative. That’s where Alita comes in. Her firm, comprised of a virtual “A-Team” of professionals in scientific backgrounds, come in and facilitate a conversation with stakeholders about the product or service to reveal what is important about the data and she then comes up with “credible and compelling” communication surrounding that item or service. Once she gleans and crystalizes that information, she provides training to the professionals that need it, so that everyone in the system is up to speed on the critical facts.

Overall, through the lens of a supplier diversity professional from a large organization, and an entrepreneur who created a successful firm out of the need she saw as an opportunity, we learn that there are real, and concrete opportunities on the horizon in healthcare—we just have to go out and look for them.

A graduate of Spelman College and Yale University School of Medicine Alita combines her passion for science, her love of the written word and her desire to positively impact other’s lives in her leadership of Eubio.

AngelaAngela Caruso w/ Morgan & Morgan, Atlanta PLLC

Prior to joining Morgan & Morgan, P.A, one of the largest plaintiff’s firms in the nation, Angela gained seven (7) years of professional legal experience working for Claimants/Plaintiffs with Worker’s Compensation and personal injury claims by supporting their attorneys. She is an active member of Georgia Trial Lawyers Association as a Paralegal Affiliate (GTLA),  American Association for Justice (AAJ) as a Paralegal Affiliate, Georgia Association of Paralegals (GAP) and the National Federation of Paralegal Association (NFPA). Angela was recently nominated for Paralegal of the Year by the AAJ and awarded Paralegal of the Day on June 10th, 2015 during GAP’s annual Paralegal Week.

Her legal career began when she took a temp position at a Worker’s Compensation firm while waiting for a youth ministry job to open in the Atlanta Catholic Archdiocese. She has a BA degree from Belmont Abbey College and working towards a MTS at Spring Hill College. The firm needed help with their new Case Management Software and light legal assistant duties. The firm shared office space with another firm and she was able to work part-time for both firms before securing a full time position and training as a paralegal.

She has extensive experience in all aspects of Worker’s Compensation law and enjoys sharing this knowledge by training and mentoring other paralegals. Angela has benefited from her relationship with her mentor Patty Dietz-Selke and wants to share that experience with others. Patty inspired her to help student paralegals statewide through GAP roundtable events and serving on paralegal studies school boards.

Angela hopes to continue to help Morgan & Morgan grow their Columbus, Georgia office. She appreciates the support and encouragement she receives from her attorney, Robert L. Hendrix, III, to take on leadership opportunities and strive for excellence. Angela currently serves as a chair for GAP’s Columbus chapter and wants to continue in her efforts to reach and encourage other paralegals in the Columbus area.   Her most recent goal is to become an R.P.

Originally, Angela joined GAP to have something on her bio for credibility. But then one night she needed to file a document in ICMS that was due by midnight, and she needed help. Due to the late hour, she could not call any of her co-workers for help. She went to the GAP Facebook page and posted a request for help. In less than five minutes, she had a call from a GAP member that walked her through the process. That inspired her to get involved. She started attending GAPpy Hour events and speaking at Roundtables. Patty Dietz-Selke and Sabrina Henry encouraged her to stay involved in GAP and to take leadership positions. Janet Williams has also encouraged her to study for the PACE and become a registered paralegal. It is the leadership of these women that inspire Angela to become a better paralegal for herself and others.

Angela comes from a large Italian family and enjoys spending time with her nieces, nephews and godchildren. Angela describes her family as “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” meets the “Soprano’s” without the guns and tons of cannoli.

  • to enhance the role of paralegals in the legal profession;
  • to improve the working conditions of paralegals;
  • and to maintain a continuing relationship with bar associations throughout the state.

Position Statements

On September 14, 2010, the Georgia Association of Paralegals’ Board of Directors approved GAP’s Paralegal Standards Committee’s recommendations and adopted position statements with respect to GAP’s Definition of a Paralegal; GAP’s Position on Regulation; GAP’s Position on Short-term Educational Programs; and, GAP’s Minimum Standards & Qualification Standards for Paralegals in the State of Georgia.

It is the intent of the Georgia Association of Paralegals’ Board of Directors in adopting these position statements that they serve as a guide to Paralegals seeking positions or holding Paralegal positions in Georgia. It is also the intent of the Georgia Association of Paralegals’ Board of Directors in adopting these Minimum Standards & Qualifications that they serve as a guide for Georgia attorneys, corporations, governmental entities, and all other entities who utilize the services of Paralegals. GAP’s Position Statements.

History

In 1973, a group of Atlanta area paralegals joined together to form the Atlanta Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. Their objective was to provide support for persons entering this new field, and to promote the profession to the legal community. They also wanted to create a forum for contributing to the discussions and decisions of both state and local bar associations regarding training and utilization of paralegals by attorneys. “Paralegalism” soon extended across the state, and it became apparent that people outside Atlanta needed a voice as well. Membership was expanded to include all legal assistants in Georgia. In January, 1976, AALA became GALA – Georgia Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. In 1997, GALA became GAP – Georgia Association of Paralegals, Inc.

Founder, Executive Director

11745827_1615074325419228_6018073144998445103_nMy Advocate Center is building and offering solutions needed in each community, in each state in the U.S.A. and beyond. We are about improving family stability and seeing that the needs of children are met.

When families, especially single parents and children, become homeless it turns into a daily struggle to cover even their most basic needs so we are glad to feature Children’s Restoration Network and support their drive for school supplies, clothing and backpacks to help fill these voids for homeless children. As we grow and expand, we are engaging more organizations that work to prevent homelessness as well as to serve urgent and current needs in our communities.

Our work includes serving military and veteran families and children, as they often fall onto hard times during and after service, but our veterans are also a part of the solution. Positions are being created to put as many veterans and veteran family members to work as possible.

Our Professional Spotlight #onPAR serves the mission of uplifting families and children who are caught in conflict, whether it is before the breakup of a relationship, during divorce or child custody disputes, or after a legal battle when recovery and peace are needed.

Bold moves are being made to help parents understand how to better transition through & out of conflict, meaning we help reduce stress for children, and preserve family time & resources for their benefit.

Professionals who are like-minded are encouraged to connect and become a part of our Resource Directory. Please visit the Counsel for Change group page here on LinkedIn to learn more about our discussions. Our advisory panel reviews professionals to ensure certain standards are met. If you are focused on upholding ethics rules, professional duty, and are committed to helping children receive the best that both parents have to offer, let us know.

Our investigations, initiatives & strategies are also well suited to supporting government agencies in making necessary improvements to programs & services. It is important that these changes are made to better serve parents & children; but it is also possible to yield a positive economic return for each community & state.

MAC’s purpose in contributing to agencies & other organizations is to improve the divorce/child custody process in a way that leaves our communities stronger & better able to support the needs of children. We now have opportunities to lessen the impact of family violence, addiction & other dysfunction, while putting our financial resources to better use.

Connect | Inform | Empower

When it comes to guiding public policy to improve the process, and to helping parents navigate through high-conflict custody cases, no other collection of experts and resources is better positioned to give you clear and actionable insight.

GA SB 158
Cindy Zeldin and Donald Palmisano, Jr talk GA SB 158

GA SB 158

This week we continue our monthly series with Medical Association of Georgia.  I hosted MAG CEO/Executive Director, Donald J. Palmisano, Jr., and Cindy Zeldin, Executive Director for Georgians for a Healthy Future.  We talked about the challenges Georgians face regarding the lack of information available to them about how inclusive health plans are regarding what physicians, hospitals, etc., are included in the plans.

Donald talked about how on the healthcare exchanges, patients must review every plan one at a time, checking the physician directories for each one to see if the physician(s) they need are there.  In many cases, this means going through as many as 30-80 unique plans.

This is complicated by the fact that in many cases, the listed physician directories are incorrect, or change frequently, leading patients to make their choices based on outdated/inaccurate information.

In the Georgia legislature, the senate is considering SB 158, aimed at addressing the issue of transparency in the health insurance space so patients and physicians can make sense out of this important part of how we access healthcare today.

Cindy joined Donald to talk about how Georgians for a Healthy Future has been advocating on behalf of the state’s citizens to help them get signed up for the newly-available health plans on the exchange.  She shared how last year, over 500,000 people gained access to new health plans.

We discussed the need for these patients to get educated about how to

Special Guestsplan for the financial obligations they will face regarding co-pays, co-insurance, deductibles, etc.  Folks need to learn what each of these are and have a plan for how to handle them.  One such strategy is having a health savings account, which allows them to pay for their healthcare costs with pre-tax dollars out of an account that will grow over time.

We also talked about how important it is for physicians and citizens to engage with their state legislators to talk about how these issues affect them in their daily lives.  SB 158 is still in the early stages, with decisions being made on it coming next spring.

Alii Healthcare

On this week’s show we hosted experts from the telehealth platform, Alii Healthcare.  Dr. Sylvan Waller, Founder/CEO of Alii Healthcare, Dr. Reginald Nesbitt, Christie Sherman, RN, and Alii client, Jennifer Smith joined us to talk about how the technology solution works.  They have created a mobile app called, “Bond”, which uses a mobile device’s camera to allow a patient to engage face-to-face with an ER physician to determine best course of action with minor, but time-sensitive complaints.

Sylvan shared how today, the average wait time for patients to be seen by a doctor from time of request for appointment is as much as 18 days.  We also talked about the fact that it is not uncommon for less acute complaints such as respiratory infections, minor cuts, sprains, etc, to wait in an ER for 2-4 hours (or more).

Having been an ER physician for a number of years, he saw first hand how these patients can become dissatisfied with their experience due to the fact that they’ve had to wait so long before being seen.  He felt there must be a better way.

He and his partners set out to take advantage of telehealth technology to create an application that uses a mobile device’s camera to allow a patient to request to speak with a physician, and within seconds or a few minutes at most, they can “Facetime” with a qualified ER physician.  Using the mobile device’s camera, the doctor can view a patient’s throat, swollen ankle, minor cut, etc.  From there he/she can make recommendations for medical prescriptions or treatments, or recommend the patient is seen in an urgent care or ER.

The team brought with them, Alii Healthcare client, Jennifer Smith.  She talked about her experiences using the Bond app to get diagnosis and prescriptions for minor injuries suffered while running and a respiratory infection.

Jennifer talked about how intuitive the application’s interface is and how quickly she was able to speak directly with a physician without having to leave her home.
