Even though she was studying graphic communications, she continued to pursue photography studying under prfoessionals like David Cook, Lindsay Adler, Lou Freeman, and Jeremy Cowart. After a brief break for motherhood, she started two companies to serve both of her strengths in photography and marketing/graphic design. Shutter Sweet Photography focuses on telling stories through weddings and portraits while giving back to the community. Skylight Creative Group serves small to medium size businesses through corporate photography, marketing and graphic design.

Mike La Sage/Bone Lick BBQ Facebook

Bone Lick BBQ started as a pop-up restaurant concept by Executive Chef Mike LaSage at P’cheen, on Monday Nights, in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. For one night a week, P’cheen transformed into a BBQ restaurant that quickly gained popularity in and out of the city. People driving from all over the greater Atlanta burbs to get a sampling of that delicious, smoky goodness. Atlanta Magazine named it #4 in the state and #1 in the city limits.

Recently, Bone Lick BBQ has been fielding requests to bring their deliciousness to the masses. Special event catering and appearances at regional festivals has drastically helped to expand their business.

November is Diabetes Awareness month. Did you know that diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of new, irreversible blindness in adults from industrialized nations for people aged 20-74? Globally, 93 million people suffer from Diabetic Retinopathy alone. Four primary eye diseases are linked to diabetes: cataracts, glaucoma, macular edema and the most common- diabetic retinopathy. Duration of diabetes, poor glycemic control and hypertension are the highest risk factors for diabetic eye disease. Diabetes affects the eye in specific ways.

First, high blood sugar can cause swelling in the lens of the eye. This can be a temporary condition. Over time, diabetes damages the tiny blood vessels in the retina and can cause blind spots, blurred and double vision, “flashing lights”, floating spots and decreased vision. Visual acuity can also fluctuate. Decreased vision, however affects daily living. There are four stages of Diabetic Retinopathy and eye exams for diabetics include more specialized test than a routine annual comprehensive eye exam. There are no treatments available to restore lost vision. However, there are treatments that can minimize further damage and aid in coping with the damage including: lasers, medicine, surgery and vision-related rehabilitation.

In this segment and as part of Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Janelle Davison, a local optometrist that specializes in clinically complex eye care will provide a general overview of how diabetes affects the eye, diabetic eye diseases, treatments and preventive strategies for diabetic patients to maintain their vision. Listeners can visit: www.brillianteyesmarietta.com, www.visionaware.org or www.diabetes.org for more information.

Dr. Janelle Davison

  • BS in Biology from Xavier University in LA
  • Doctor of Optometry from Pennsylvania College of Optometry
  • Specialist in clinically complex eye disease
  • Currently in private practice at Brilliant Eye Vision Center in Marietta, GA

Tim MadisonTim Madison retired once already.  In fact he retired twice – once from General Electric, and once from Coca Cola.  One would think he’d done his duty!  A New England native, Tim earned his undergraduate degree in Mathematics from the University of Vermont.  He later moved to the DC area and earned a graduate degree from American University.  He spent career in information technology, working for GE and Coke.  Along the way, he developed an interest in financial planning, and earned his Certified Financial Planner designation in his spare time.  Though he moonlighted as a certified financial planner for seven hears, in 2000 Tim decided to retire from Corporate America, and become a financial planner full time.  About five years ago, Tim found Money Concepts, and decided to put out a shingle under their name.  Money Concepts has more than 2500 certified financial planners worldwide, and provides consistency of service across all 50 states and dozens of countries.

Tim tells us that he does not sell a product of any kind.  Rather, Tim is an educator.  His goal is to get his clients to consider three things:

  1. How they will live in retirement,
  2. How they will manage the cost of long term care, and
  3. What legacy, if any, they will leave behind.

Regardless of the level at which any of these three are funded, Tim wants to make sure that his clients have choices, and that each client understands the choices, and deliberately plans for them.  For more information, check out his website here, or call him directly at (678) 679-6473.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show. Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for more than 20 years.
