Nelson, Cindy correctedAfter a successful 25-year career in information technology, Cindy Nelson felt she needed to make more of a difference in the lives of the people and community around her.  On a whim, she took the LSAT test, and discovered that either law is easy, or she had a natural inclination for it!  Though not looking to go to law school, she was approached by several that wanted to pay her way!

So Cindy quit her job, and went to law school!  She selected Southern Illinois University because both her mother and brother lived there, and she had an opportunity to live close to them after 20 plus years away.  During that time she discovered that the school ran an elder law clinic that provided free legal counsel to seniors across the southern portion of the state.  In getting involved in this clinic, she discovered her passion.  On a Christmas break, Cindy went to hear Miles Hurley speak at a church group.  It was at this presentation that she confirmed her desire to practice elder law.

In addition to her work with Miles Hurley, Cindy also did an internship with the Georgia Long Term Care Ombudsman, Melanie McNeil, working at the capitol advocating for seniors rights.  She continues this work today, representing Co-Age, the Georgia Gerontology Society and the Area Agencies on Aging.  She’s got her work cut out for her, since Georgia has the 4th fastest growing senior population in the country, and Georgia was the second hardest hit state in the country from sequestration, losing nearly 14% of their federal funding.

Advocating for seniors’ rights is Cindy’s passion, and it shows through in every conversation!  To reach Cindy directly, send her an email at GASeniorAdvocate@yaoo.com!

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show. Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for more than 20 years.

Medicine is not “one size fits all” and medicine involves making decisions- many of them. Traditionally, patients have relied on their health care providers thinking that “the doctor knows best” in the areas of medicine, treatments, procedures, surgery and hospitalizations. However, some of the most important and potentially life altering healthcare decisions are not the clinicians’ alone to make. Many believe that with shared medical decision making- when the provider brings evidenced based medical expertise and the patient brings their preferences and values, benefits soar such as: a focus on prevention, an increased ability to manage chronic conditions, increased patient satisfaction and decreased costs. Examples of common healthcare decisions include: elder care, end of life decisions, management of chronic back pain, charting a cancer treatment course, elective surgery and maternity care.

Health literacy also is a component of making better healthcare decisions as many providers overestimate the health literacy of their patients. Patient may lack the fundamental tools to understand what is happening in their bodies and what to do about it. They may not have been brought into the decision making by their provider, know how to work within the medical system, understand the right questions to ask or believe they have power to help heal themselves.

In this segment, Dr. Joseph Pinzone, a double board-certified physician who specializes in endocrinology and the provision of care through the concierge model, has written a new book titled, “Fireballs in My Eucharist” (which was a patient’s description of fibroids in her uterus!). He will discuss the book and how patients can get educated, obtain tools to help in their decision making and help better heal themselves and be an active participant in their healthcare. Listeners can visit www.medamai.com and www.informedmedicaldecisions.org for more information.

Mike La Sage/Bone Lick BBQ Facebook

Bone Lick BBQ started as a pop-up restaurant concept by Executive Chef Mike LaSage at P’cheen, on Monday Nights, in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. For one night a week, P’cheen transformed into a BBQ restaurant that quickly gained popularity in and out of the city. People driving from all over the greater Atlanta burbs to get a sampling of that delicious, smoky goodness. Atlanta Magazine named it #4 in the state and #1 in the city limits.

Recently, Bone Lick BBQ has been fielding requests to bring their deliciousness to the masses. Special event catering and appearances at regional festivals has drastically helped to expand their business.
