Children’s Tumor Foundation

NF refers to genetic conditions that cause tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. NF includes all forms of neurofibromatosis and schwannomatosis and affects about 4 million people worldwide. Anyone can be born with NF, and it affects everyone differently. There is no cure yet.

The Children’s Tumor Foundation is the drug discovery engine for NF. By bringing together patients, doctors, scientists, and pharma, we drive treatments, advance care, and deliver faster results for millions affected by neurofibromatosis or schwannomatosis. Their patient-first collaborative approach accelerates drug development and brings life-changing therapies to patients faster—driven by their mission to end NF.

On a fundamental level, they do that through managing funds held in trust, donated by individuals, organizations, and businesses. Most funds are donor-advised funds, similar to savings accounts. Exit Teams: Build a Team of Advisors for Your Business Sale to Get a Higher Price

You’ve got one shot to sell your business right!

The American Dream fulfilled! You are a business owner, and it’s time to cash in on the sale of your business. Except the buyers on the other side of the table are prepared with a team of experts ready to lower your price.

Enter Exit Teams. This book won’t give you tactics that don’t pertain to your situation, and it won’t promise you beach chairs and Caribbean sunsets. This book will tell you the truth, letting you know the psychological dangers that play into a business sale, and how buyers can use that psychology to acquire your business for far less than you, the owner, could have made.

Follow along with Dave, the owner of FineLine Manufacturing, who received notice of a health scare, forcing him to think about selling before he’s ready. Dave makes many of the typical business seller moves, getting advice from seemingly logical but misaligned resources. Pressures mount from his employees, his customers, his friends, and his family as he juggles a business sale while maintaining secrecy.

When Dave finally gets an offer, it’s for far less than he had hoped. This sends Dave on a whirlwind of choices that pull him in many directions. Will Dave learn the lessons required to give him the best chance at business sale success before he loses his largest customer?

Exit Teams will:

  • Alert you to the emotional roller coaster that arises during a business sale.
  • Educate you to the common pitfalls business owners fall into, often of their own making.
  • Explain what an Exit Team is, and why they are necessary for the ultimate business sale success.
  • Warn you of some of the strategies buyers employ to pressure business sellers to lower their price.
  • Caution you about lifting expectations according to a colleague’s experience (hint: it may not be all he says it is).
  • Counsel you on how to handle family dynamics during a business sale.
  • Present you with common decisions made by inexperienced business sellers so you won’t make the same choices.
  • Display the challenge of secrecy among employees and customers.
  • Address health challenges and how they often impact the business owner while trying to sell.
  • Stress the need to understand your company’s value on an ongoing basis.
  • Provide you with a business selling experience without your having to learn the hard way from real life at the cost of millions of dollars

Show Summary

Introduction

In the contemporary struggle to address housing shortages and affordability, accessory dwelling units (ADUs) have emerged as a viable solution. In our latest episode of North Fulton Voices, hosts Jack Murphy and Nancy Diamond of the North Fulton Improvement Network engaged with leaders from Woodstock, Georgia, to delve into how this picturesque city’s innovative approach to housing could serve as a beacon for other regions facing similar challenges.

Understanding ADUs

Jack Murphy kicked off the discussion by unpacking the concept of ADUs, defining them as additional living spaces within or adjacent to homes. Known alternatively as garage apartments, guest cottages, or in-law suites, these units are gaining traction as a practical measure against the housing deficit. Yet, existing regulations often limit their development, preventing homeowners from maximizing their property’s potential.

Woodstock’s Revolutionary Approach

Tracy Albers, Director of Community Development, City of Woodstock
Tracy Albers, Director of Community Development, City of Woodstock

Tracy Albers, Woodstock’s Community Development Director, detailed the city’s progressive steps in revamping urban ordinances to facilitate ADU construction. After assessing national trends and local needs, Woodstock has tailored its ordinance to make ADU development simple and beneficial for homeowners and the community alike. With this move, Woodstock is not just increasing the housing inventory but also empowering residents by enhancing property values and diversifying living options.

Benefits of ADUs

Mayor Michael Caldwell echoed the sentiment, underscoring how ADUs contribute to the housing landscape without the need for extensive new development. They address pressing issues like the 300,000-unit housing deficit in Metro Atlanta, offering flexible solutions while maintaining community aesthetics and quality of life.

Cameron Dunn, City Planner, City of Woodstock
Cameron Dunn, City Planner, City of Woodstock

Cameron Dunn outlined the public’s interest, noting an uptick in inquiries about converting existing structures like garages and loft spaces into ADUs. This demand reflects a growing awareness among residents about utilizing their property effectively, either for additional income or family support.

Addressing Concerns and Future Outlook

ADUs naturally raise questions about potential zoning conflicts and HOA restrictions. However, Woodstock’s ordinance harmonizes ADU development with existing residential frameworks, ensuring that homeowners retain the freedom to maximize their property’s utility without infringing on neighborhood standards.

While ADUs are often associated with modern housing challenges, they hark back to timeless practices of community-centric development. As Mayor Caldwell highlighted, cities are defined by their flexibility and adaptability, and embracing ADUs could help Woodstock retain its vibrant, family-friendly character.

Encouragement for Broader Adoption

Nancy Diamond and Jack Murphy urged listeners to consider the broader impacts of housing policy. With Woodstock paving the way, other regions can learn from its example, crafting ordinances that embrace ADUs as a mainstream option for addressing housing shortages.

Conclusion

Woodstock is a prime example of how municipalities can spearhead modern housing solutions by implementing innovative policies and engaging with the community. By re-integrating ADUs into urban planning, cities can offer residents improved living conditions while meeting future housing needs. As listeners of North Fulton Voices are reminded, it’s essential to engage with local housing policies to mold communities that reflect both current realities and future aspirations.

Andy founded Fort Leadership in 2019 after a 33-year career in Medical Device Sales and Marketing Leadership; 25 of those years were with Zimmer (NYSE ZBH) formerly a division of Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE BMY).

Andy’s journey began at 9 years old when he started in Cub Scouts with his dad and his younger brother. His parents constantly reinforced the Scout lessons of character and integrity. Andy continued in Scouting and at the age of 16, he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. At 17, his mom handed him the book, How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. Andy credits that book with igniting his passion for learning how to get along with people. From Hill, to Covey, from Peale to Ziglar and Maxwell, Andy became a voracious reader of books about leadership, character, communication and teamwork.

After 5 years working as a golf caddie, Andy was the recipient of the prestigious Evans Scholarship Award (www.wgaesf.org). Andy used his scholarship to earn a B.S. in Medical Technology from Michigan State University.

In 1985, Andy loaded up his car with nothing more than his resume, a sport coat and tie, $2500, a big dream and faith that God was going to fill in the gaps. He moved to Atlanta, GA, in pursuit of a medical sales career where he could leverage his passion for medicine to serve people. Andy grew his medical sales business well into 7 figures by applying the leadership, character, communication, and teamwork lessons he learned from reading books and listening to thought leaders. As Andy continued to advance in his career, he was invited to speak to organizations and train teams on those lessons learned throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.

Andy founded Fort Leadership to continue speaking, training, and coaching individuals and teams in leadership and character development. These skills foster growth in corporate leadership, communication, and teamwork. His corporate experience and insights train leaders to develop healthy corporate cultures with team members who are motivated, engaged, and purpose-driven, resulting in increased employee retention, team performance, and revenue growth!

Andy and his wife, Sherrie, live in Alpharetta, GA and have four adult children. They are members of Pastor Andy Stanley’s North Point Community Church (www.northpoint.org), where Andy is a small group leader in the North Point Men’s Ministry. The Best Advice I Ever Received, with Anthony Chen, Host of Family Business Radio

The Best Advice I Ever Received, with Anthony Chen, Host of Family Business Radio

In this commentary from a recent Family Business Radio episode, host Anthony Chen shares the best advice he ever received.

Anthony’s commentary was taken from this episode of Family Business Radio. Family Business Radio is underwritten by Anthony Chen with Lighthouse Financial Network.

Transcript

The most thankful advice I ever received from my mentor was “Anthony, people don’t make rational decisions. They make emotional decisions and then rationalize it.” And for those who know me, I know I’ve run my life in a very “Spock-like” manner where, Oh, what do you mean?

Everybody makes rational decisions. Yeah. Okay. That that, that took two to three years of him beating that into my head for it to finally sink through in terms of really advice to pass forward to piggyback off of our two guests and especially what just happened in the pre-recording is there is a calendar and spreadsheet of a life.

And then there’s life and for those who know me being the anal retentive control freak now that I have an almost seven-month-old that the idea of control is just fantasy. So for those of you listening in this I’ll end the show with this, if you think you can control life of on just a calendar and spreadsheet this is again, hearkening back to my mentor, Daryl, spoken like a true bachelor who doesn’t have a family yet.

And I did not realize that until I have my own family. Thank you for listening in to Family Business Radio.
