Assimilation – The Great White Washing of African Americans E5

Today we were excited to have Terri Givens reunited with Karen Loomis after not seeing each for 40 years after competing against each other in Track and Field while kids growing up in Spokane, WA. Both seek a greater understanding of the decision made by their parents upon deciding to raise their combined 12 children in a city with barely 1% African American population at the time. Their shared experiences were echo’d by Camilla Ross and her childhood.

Learn how and why empathy is so important as you try to understand the outrage and protests we are currently seeing in the U.S. Terri’s education system insight will help guide you during this time of online or distance learning for your children of any color.

Camilla-Ross-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXCamilla Ross is the President and Chairman of Emerson Theater Collaborative, Inc., Producer and Actress (Portray’s Harriet Tubman – Harriet Tubman’s Dream written by Lisa Giordano). She is also the President and Chairman of the Sedona Arts Academy.

“To be a catalyst for social change is really where it’s at for me,” Camilla said. “I believe theater should always be a venue for social change. I love the art of live theater and love what it does to the human soul and spirit. It moves us to look at life differently. To leave off the rose-colored glasses and really see the human condition.”ETC is a shining example.

Founded in 2008 to give voice to actors’ innate talent for character development, Camilla has since produced more than 20 inspired, original performances. Emerging and professional cast and crew have blossomed under her guidance. To that end, she’s a tireless advocate for children and adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. She gives kids and teen real-life theatrical experience through ETC’s Summer Youth Program and enlivens their eagerness to learn about the history and genuine heroes through ETC’s school programs. The power of building a business in a community of other businesses that you can learn from, is especially pertinent in today’s environment. MAC6 Conscious workspace strives to offer that to all of its members. It doesn’t matter whether you’re selling someone insurance or Stem Education if, at the end of the day, you are giving people the opportunity to live better lives than the day before, then we all are striving for the same thing, right?

In this episode of MAC6 Community Connection Radio Show and Podcast, host Kyle McIntosh talked with members, Edward Marin of Asurea and Kelly Greene with SciTech Institute, about that very thing. They also all agreed that reassessing your office space needs as a company leads to a lot of creativity about how to best serve the current stage of your business and goals. MAC6 has unique offerings to allow for the ultimate flexibility to do so.

SciTech Institute is a nonprofit organization that encompasses some of the strongest STEM initiatives in Arizona, including the Arizona SciTech Festival, the Chief Science Officers Program, the RAIN Grant, the AZ STEM School Community of Practice, and Science for All.

Kelly-Greene-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXAfter graduating from a small rural school in western New York and joining the United States Army, Kelly Greene learned quickly to adapt to her surroundings to be successful. While stationed in Misawa, Japan, Kelly fell in love with learning about cultures around the world. Even as a deployed Soldier during Operation Iraqi Freedom for two tours, she found opportunities to connect with the local children to form the Victory Base Council Girl Guides/Scouts with her fellow servicemen. In 2013, she was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and traveled the country by air. She had the opportunity to utilize the most advanced technologies available to the tactical HUMINT operations in theater.

Upon return from combat, Kelly retired with 20+ years of service and began teaching 6th grade Math. After being selected as Westside Impact Teacher of the Year, she was asked to teach a new class on campus – 7th grade STEM! Combining her love of learning with endless enthusiasm and strong classroom management, Kelly was able to design curriculum based on the Engineering Design Process for over 150 7th graders. Now, as the CSO International Director of Student Success for the rapidly expanding Chief Science Officers Program her goal is to push students just a bit outside of their comfort zone so they can see for themselves the power of their own ideas.

As the Chief Operations Officer for SciTech Institute, Kelly is focused on process development and systems integration through the implementation of the Entrepreneurial Operating System. Connect with Kelly to discuss opportunities to engage with the team and programs!

ABOUT YOUR MAC6 COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS CO-HOSTS

KyleMcIntoshWith a background in marketing, in various for profit and not for profit companies, Kyle McIntosh wondered, “How can I pair the passion and commitment to community progress of a non-profit with the sustainability and reach of a for profit company?” From this question and perspective a mission evolved to tear down the false distinction between the two sectors and to promote companies with Conscious Capitalism® business models through MAC6.

Kyle is the President and Creative Excitant of MAC6.  Day to day, his main operational role is on the “spaces” side of the business, focusing on creating thriving communities in the commercial office buildings, the co-working space, and the co-manufacturing space.  The other role that he plays is that of EOS implementer, working with clients to bring the Entrepreneurial Operating System, from the book Traction® to their businesses.  Additionally, he sits on the boards of Conscious Capitalism Arizona, telling the stories of good businesses in Arizona, and The Tempe Chamber of Commerce, sustaining Tempe’s quality of life and keeping our community and economy vibrant.

Kyle loves Arizona and wants to see us all collectively find great success based on the awesome things that are happening here every day.

Passion for Fashion with Dayna Mance and Prism Boutique E17

If you have a passion for fashion, or you just want to hear from a fierce female business leader, you will not want to miss this episode. Dayna has an infectious passion for fashion, but her true passion is in helping to elevate other female brands and artists while building Prism.

Tune in to hear how they used Covid to focus on the future of the business and how they have and will emerge stronger because of it.

Prism Boutique is a globally recognized brand with an eclectic and inclusive community of brands, artists and customers. Fresh, hand-picked clothing, accessories and home goods- locally made and from across the globe. With a boutique in Long Beach, CA and a growing online shop, Prism Boutique has emerged as a leader in the small business retail world.

Seeking out undiscovered makers, working with designers they love, and standing behind brands they believe in, as well as supporting other women in business, is crucial to Prism’s brand and mission.

Danya-Mance-Prism-BoutiqueThrowing caution to the wind — and leaving a 10-year corporate career with URBN Inc. — Dayna Mance opened Prism Boutique in 2013 on a sleepy Long Beach street.

Flash forward to two remodels, two kids, a team of nearly dozen women who power day-to-day operations, and today Prism is what Dayna always knew it to be: a living inspiration board for all the things she loves.

It’s been Dayna’s unwavering vision and commitment to our mission of supporting other small, predominantly women-owned brands, artists and makers and connecting them to our community that has made Prism the success that it is.

E60 Understanding Mindfulness and Meditation from Jon Macaskill

How can Mindfulness and Meditation benefit your life and relationships? In this episode we hear from Veteran Navy Seal Commander Jon Macaskill to learn the events which lead him to pursue mindfulness and meditation.

Jon recently retired from the Navy and joined us from the road as he and his family are touring the country in an RV. Jon also shares the history of Veteran’s Path, a Non-Profit organization supporting Veterans with mindfulness and meditation. Jon hosts the Veteran’s Path podcast speaking with a diverse set of leaders who share their mindfulness journey.

Jon also shared the story behind the Scrum on the Go board that he helped developed with his partners. This mobile Scrum Board is a perfect tool for individuals, teams, and families looking to organize and make progress on their activities.

This was a great light-hearted discussion that covered plenty of ground and we got to meet Jon’s dog who was riding shotgun for the interview. Thanks to Jon for his service to our country and for taking time to share his story with all of us.
