In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how meal plans can help you lose weight. A funny thing happened when the Jenny Craig people funded a study to see if people who used a structured meal plan (like the one they sell) really helped people lose weight. It does. So now Jenny Craig wants insurance to cover plans like the ones they offer. Imagine getting free food – covered by insurance. The pros of structured meal plan are that you know exactly how many calories you are eating – so if you only eat those foods you will lose weight. The problem with these plans are that people like to go to restaurants and eat a variety of things and eventually people get bored eating these microwavable meals for every meal every single day. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain some common healthcare terms. Health care plans are complicated by design. So we though we’d explain some of the basic terms. Deductible is what you have to pay before the insurance kicks in. Co-pay is the fixed amount you pay to see your doctor or get any medication. Co-insurance is the percentage of the cost of care that you are responsible for. Usually the higher your co-pay and deductible that you are willing to pay will lower your monthly insurance cost. But who knows what will happen when Obamacare kicks in. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Worth area.  Over the course of time, Don discovered that he had a real passion for our country’s service men and women, and wanted to give his own time to help them.  Approximately four years ago, Don went into semi-retirement, and began volunteering his services to assist veterans in navigating the application process for the Improved Pension Benefit, also known as Veterans Aid & Attendance.  Don’s services are free of charge to veterans and their families.  Don can be reached by phone at 1-800-500-9168 ext. 210, or at (972) 267-6735.  He can also be reached via email at d_stockard@sbcglobal.net

Walker, Paul croppedPaul Walker is Vice President and General Manager, Georgia for Universal American.  Universal American offers a number of Medicare supplemental insurance products.  Medicare Annual Enrollment began on November 15, and closes on December 31.  With all the confusion regarding healthcare reform and the various plans offered by different companies, Paul offers some valuable tips to seniors to navigate the complex array of Medicare supplemental options.  Listeners can reach Universal American at 1-866-561-4405, or via the internet at www.universal-american-medicare.com.

Sheridan, Pam croppedOur second guest, Pam Sheridan, came to serve seniors via an unconventional route.  Growing up an “army brat”, Pam came to Atlanta to work in interior design.  Originally becoming involved in hospice as a volunteer, she developed a passion for the work, and eventually took a position as Community Liaison for Compassionate Hospice of Northeast Georgia.  In addition to bringing a natural energy and exuberance to encourage her patients and their families, she hopes to soon bring her therapy dog, Justice!  Pam can be reached at 678-651-1440. Visit Compassionate’s website at www.chcmg.com.

Baskam, Stefani croppedStefani Baskam is also relatively new to the Senior Care industry.  Mother of three girls, she started considering returning to the workplace as her girls started to go off to college.  After confirming her gifts for service and hospitality through a spiritual gifts assessment, she began investigating various marketplace options.  A neighbor led her to an opportunity at the new Sunrise Johns Creek Senior Living Community.  Since it’s opening earlier this year, Stefani has served as the Community Relations Director.  To take a tour, stop by the community at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road, or call Stefani at (770) 814-0505.  You can also find Sunrise on the web at www.sunriseseniorliving.com.
