Georgia LitLink was the state’s first literacy conference dedicated to classroom teachers. The teacher-facing conference was cohosted by the Georgia Department of Education and the Rollins Center for Language & Literacy, a program of the Atlanta Speech School.

Held at the Gas South Convention Center in Duluth, GA in June 2024, the conference was the start of a yearlong journey through which teachers representing Georgia’s 181 districts and state charter districts learn as key change agents in Georgia’s statewide literacy effort.

Top scholars and experts from across the nation joined side-by-side with Georgia’s teachers to share how the science of reading supports effective literacy practices that shape the first day and every day of the school year. Teachers are the critical catalysts connecting the statewide effort to ensure all Georgia’s children are taught to read. As they reach and teach each child, they are working toward more than reading proficiency. They are connecting children to who they will become and helping them decide their own futures.

Dr. Ryan Lee-James/Rollins Center for Language and Literacy at the Atlanta Speech School

Dr. Ryan Lee-James is a speech-language pathologist, researcher, and published author with expertise in language development, language disorders, and literacy in the context of linguistic differences and socioeconomic disadvantage. She currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer and Director of the Rollins Center for Language and Literacy at the Atlanta Speech School.

Before joining the Speech School team, she had the privilege of training and mentoring graduate level speech-language pathologists as a member of the Communication Sciences and Disorders faculty at Adelphi University in New York. Dr. Lee-James serves as the Vice President of Speech-Language Language Pathology for the American Speech-Language Hearing Association and also serves on other national and local boards to realize liberation through language and literacy for all children.

Dr. Margie Gillis/Literacy How

Margie Gillis is a nationally recognized literacy expert and a Certified Academic Language Therapist who has been teaching children of all ages to read for over 40 years. She received her Doctorate of Education from the University of Louisville in Special Education. Margie has worked at the policy level through the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE). She was instrumental in Connecticut’s adoption of a universal screening test for K-3 students, implementing the Connecticut Foundations of Reading Test as part of the certification process for pre-service teachers, and is a member of the Connecticut K-4 Reading Model management team.

In 2009, Margie founded Literacy How to provide professional development opportunities and coaching for teachers on how best to implement evidence-based reading practices in the classroom. Their vision is to close the opportunity gap and raise reading achievement for all students. They transform reading instruction by empowering teachers to ensure that every child learns to read by third grade. They teach educators in all grades to meet emerging and struggling readers where they are, building their foundation for a successful future.

95% of students can learn to read. However, only 35% of students read on grade level. Many teachers don’t learn about the science of reading and its application in their preparation programs, both pre-service and post-graduate. Through training, coaching, and mentoring, every teacher working with Literacy How is given the knowledge and skills needed to teach children to read, write, and spell. Their model is research-based and their approach is values-driven.

Preface Project 4th Annual Childhood Literacy Benefit Gala

Founder and Executive Director, JT Wu & Heather Phillips, Director of Educational Development

Preface is a national 501(c)(3) philanthropic initiative that empowers communities to combat early childhood illiteracy and secure foundational educational opportunities for the next generation!

Their model works by first pairing a local high school and local elementary school together as Preface Partners. Their expert teams then work with the high school administration to select and train student leaders (“Preface Ambassadors”) in clinically-endorsed educational best practices, including finger-led reading, dialogic responses, voice inflections, and dyadic scaffolding.

Preface Ambassadors culturally and linguistically reflect the communities they serve, allowing them to maximize engagement capacity with young students most in need of educational assistance and mentorship.

Ambassadors work directly into the elementary school classrooms to act as free supplemental resources for local educators on the ground, allowing for highly personal engagement and reading assistance in small group classroom settings!

Preface’s relational model has helped elementary school students make gains in literacy skills nearly twice as fast as their peers, while high schoolers gain firsthand service experience and a newfound appreciation for careers in education.

Additionally, Preface has been recognized by the GA Dept. of Education as an innovative World Languages program and is advised by experts affiliated with a wide variety of institutions, including the Georgia Leadership Institute for School Improvement, McKinsey & Company, J.P. Morgan Chase, Microsoft, and Princeton University.

Read Better Be Better with CEO and Founder Sophie Etchart and Paracore President Adam Arkfeld E12

Read Better Be Better is an after school literacy program designed to be highly effective and evidence informed. Their mission is to help children improve literacy skills to become better learners.

They create change by helping children master reading comprehension in three ways:

  • Improving concentration
  • Encouraging an active enjoyment of reading
  • Helping develop a deeper understanding of what is being read

They support basic classroom instruction with additional comprehension strategies to improve proficiency and positively impact future academic success. Read Better Be Better with CEO and Founder Sophie Etchart and Paracore President Adam Arkfeld E12

RBBB uses trained 8th grade volunteers to implement a simple, but highly structured after-school program for 3rd graders. The older students work one-on- one with the younger students, modeling and fostering active engagement with a variety of texts. The program also includes constructive play activities specifically chosen for their ability to focus attention and improve concentration.

Sophie-EtchartSophie Etchart was born in Connecticut, but raised and educated in England. She studied Spanish, French and German at the University of Newcastle-Upon- Tyne. As part of her degree, Sophie spent her third year of University living and working in Belgium and Spain.

Upon graduation, Sophie joined a financial services agency specializing in board-level strategic HR consulting. In 2009 Sophie designed and executed the Private Equity Foundation / Deutsche Bank Leadership Program: a series of instructional workshops and networking events in partnership with INSEAD business school, France. After spending a year on loan to the Private Equity Foundation as a strategic HR consultant, Sophie committed to a full transition into the non-profit sector.

Sophie moved to Peru in 2010 to run the education program at SKIP, an international development organization in northern Peru. For 2 years she managed a team of 25 staff and volunteers working with 330 young people aged 3-17. The key component of the program was a comprehension curriculum designed to complement the national public schooling system. This program received a commendation during a site visit by professional contacts at the Bill Gates foundation.

Sophie met her husband, an Arizona native, in Peru and moved to Phoenix in 2012. She spent 2 years managing the JA BizTown® team at Junior Achievement. Upon her departure, each member of her team had delivered “outstanding” performance according to standardized quantitative KPI assessments.

Sophie had identified the need for basic reading comprehension support during her 2 years at Junior Achievement. The JA BizTown® program serves over 20,000 students per year; an alarming number of whom had neither the focus nor the foundational skills to obtain the most value from the experience. When the “Move On When Reading” law was announced, she decided that the timing was critical to support those 3rd graders at risk of being kept behind. Read Better Be Better is based on the proven SKIP model and adapted to the current environment.

In 2017, Sophie was recognized as one of Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 younger business leaders making an impact in the Phoenix area.
