GeorgiaCares is a private-public partnership, administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Aging Services (DAS). GeorgiaCares is a volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased and factual information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. GeorgiaCares is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and SMP (formerly Senior Medicare Patrol).

Local assistance is available for health insurance related issues including Medicare, Medicaid, financial assistance programs, health error, fraud and abuse and long term care insurance. The GeorgiaCares program is statewide. Services are provided through the twelve (12) Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). For information on your local AAA, call 1-866-552-4464 (option 4).

Originally from Jonesboro, Arkansas, John McNair graduated from law school at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. Wanting to further his education, John came to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, ultimately received a Master of Tax Law degree. He began his private practice in 1983, and spent the first decade on estate planning, probate and taxation. Today, John is a Partner in the firm Barnett, McNair, Hall LLP. Over the past fifteen years, John has been thrilled to see his practice start to gravitate towards Elder Law. He takes particular satisfaction in being able to help seniors find funds to pay for their long term care, and in helping them preserve the estates they have worked so hard to build. Helen Fredrick tells us that everything she’s done in her career thus far has led up to her current position as the Director of Plymouth Harbour’s Day Program for Older Adults. I love it when a plan comes together! An English major in college, Helen ultimately earned a Master of Social Work degree, and has worked in a wide variety of healthcare settings. Plymouth Harbour is a congregational respite program, and a non-profit ministry of the Central Congregational United Church of Christ. They are to celebrate their 20th year! Plymouth Harbour’s mission is to maintain and strengthen the abilities of older adults and to provide support to their caregivers. This respite program is available from 10 AM to 3 PM on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. There is a Caregivers Support Group the meets the first and third Thursday of each month from 10:30 AM to 12PM. N. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community. A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law. After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm. As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection. After earning degrees in both English and History, Dan Munster did what anybody would do with those two degrees. He went back to school to study Law! Upon completion of his law degree, Dan had the privilege of working for Atlanta Legal Aid for five years. During his tenure there, he was allowed to choose the area of law he wanted to practice. Dan chose the Senior Citizens Law Project as a result of his relationship with his paternal grandmother, and her experiences as a senior.
