E91 Transitioning from the Military to Project Management with Art García, Curtis Brown, Cathy Christian

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Art García, Cathy Christian, and Curtis Brown join PMO Joe for an enlightening discussion about veterans, project management, and mentorship.

One of the themes from the show is a helping hand goes a long way. “Communicating, connecting and mentoring; you’re building your network and the person you help today may be the person that helps you tomorrow.”- Art García. Mentorship can be one of the most influential parts to a successful military transition. Creating safe outlets for a new professional can make all the difference for them.

A great mentor supplies positive influence, guidance and the direction that the person wants to take. “It’s about trying to get people to change their aperture. How can I get this person to open their aperture? Kind of think outside of the box. What are the things that you’ve done? And when you see the light bulb goes off.” -Curtis Brown

Art, Cathy and Curtis provide great leadership to veteran service organizations such as VPMMA, NOVA Job Outreach, PMI, and Onward to Opportunity. “You don’t even recognize what you’re doing, how helpful and impactful that is to the folks that you’re helping. Because to you, it’s just a conversation. It’s just a natural thing that you’re doing. Then when they come back and tell you what an impact it was, you’re like, oh! I had no idea.” -Cathy Christian

No One Left Behind – Arizona Nonprofits Work to Ensure Veterans Receive the Support They Need and the Opportunities They’ve Earned

Arizona’s veterans community is large, strong and active. Get insights into how several diverse nonprofits are assisting veterans and their families — and how you can help in this latest podcast.

Special guests Paula Pedene of Honoring America’s Veterans, Victoria Bellomo-Rosacci of Soldier’s Best Friend and Mike Phillips or Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve discuss some of the innovate efforts to support our veteran communities. HAVLogo2019fullcolor

Honoring America’s Veterans (HAV) Mission statement is “To help Arizona’s veterans heal and reintegrate through recognition events and programs”. HAV’s signature and primary event is the annual Phoenix Veteran’s Day Parade.

HAV is passionately committed to providing a community event that ensures our veterans receive the honor and recognition they deserve and give the community the opportunity to publicly recognize and acknowledge veterans on their important day.

HAVwithSunCityPomsPaula Pedene, APR, Fellow PRSA, has a well-earned reputation as a public relations strategist and counselor in both government and nonprofit realms.

She currently serves as Executive Director of the nonprofit Honoring America’s Veterans and as Owner/Principal of her public relations firm Paula Pedene & Associates. In these roles, she provides strategic counsel to senior leaders and managers and builds trusted relationships between them and their stakeholders.

Pedene is a five-time PRSA Silver Anvil award recipient for Institutional Programs (2004), Reputation Management (2007), Community Outreach (2010, 2020), and Public Service (2020).

Her leadership awards include the Percy Award from the Phoenix PRSA Chapter, the Platinum Leadership Award from the PRSA Western District, and the Senator John McCain Inspirational Leadership Award in Arizona.

She is a member of the PRSA College of Fellows, a member of the PRSA Board of Ethics and Professional Standards, and she earned distinction as a PRSA PR Pro of the Year (2015) for her ethical stand as a Phoenix VA Whistleblower. In this realm, she was able to help expose the VA Wait Time Scandal and call for change to legislation and accountability within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Soldier’s Best Friend provides U.S. military veterans living with combat-related Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) with Service or Therapeutic Companion Dogs, most of which are rescued from local shelters. The veteran and dog train together to build a trusting relationship that touches two lives at once and inspires countless others.

Soldier’s Best Friend is devoted to helping our veterans living with combat-related Post Traumatic Stress (PTS) or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A second part of our goal is to make a positive impact on the pet overpopulation problem. We are dedicated to pairing and training service dogs with veterans at no cost to the veteran. SBF10-LogoArtboard13

Through his veterinary practice, our Founder, Dr. Burnham worked with veterans and cared for their pets. He saw how the interaction with the animals helped returning veterans interact more comfortably in civilian environments and an idea was sparked. With the support of his devoted wife and business partner, Jan, the organization was founded in 2011 and became a reality.

John’s goal was to create a nonprofit devoted to placing and training service dogs for our veterans, at no cost to them. He also wanted to acquire many of the dogs through local rescue organizations, thus helping Arizona’s pet overpopulation problem.

We offer training in Flagstaff, Prescott, Phoenix (East and West Valley), Tucson, and Sierra Vista. Using the owner/handler model, our professional Service Dog Trainers train the veteran to train their canine partner.

While our program is provided at no cost to our veterans, the average cost of a team from accepting through graduation (which takes a minimum of 6-9 months) is approximately $5,000. By the end of 2020, 302 veteran/dog teams have graduated from our program and over 183 dogs have been rescued from shelter and rescue partners across the state of Arizona.

Nearly 9 percent of Arizona residents served in the military. That’s a large number — and one that has an impact on our culture, workforce and future. Learn more about veteran networks and organizations in Arizona — and why one large statewide company employs and supports them.

Retired Rear Admiral Hal Pittman, director of military and veteran engagement at Arizona Public Service, held some of the top public affairs positions in the U.S. military. He joins us today to discuss those experiences, the value of veterans in our community and the bright future they promise our state.

Gunnery Sergeant John Hurlock – United States Marine Corps

Marines are trained to improvise, adapt and overcome any obstacle in whatever situation they are needed. They have the willingness to engage and the determination to defeat the enemy until victory is seized.

The kinds of battles active-duty Marines fight range from traditional warfare to humanitarian and disaster relief missions (HADR). The fighting spirit that helps them win these battles extends beyond the scope of their military service, and many Marines continue to serve in the communities where they live.

Before the title of Marine can be earned, the decision has to be made—to commit to a calling that puts service ahead of self, purpose above pleasure, and the determination to win against all obstacles and adversaries.

Becoming a Marine affects the entire family—and often even the entire community. It’s a decision that needs to be discussed by everyone involved. As you prepare your loved one for the milestones ahead, consider your own transformation—from that of loving mom, dad, teacher or mentor to the unbelievably proud resource they can always count on.

From the very beginning, Vantage West Credit Union existed to suit the needs of the community. In 1955, we started in a one-room barrack at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base with the mission to help Tucson’s airmen and their families. Back then, the humble DMAFB Federal Credit Union, as we were then known, served a little under 600 Members and had less than $60,000 in assets. By the end of the 1960s, we had already grown to nearly 14 thousand Members, sowing the seeds for the rapid growth we would see in the decades to come.

Vantage West got its current name in August of 2006, when the Board of Directors gained regulatory approval to convert from a federal to a state charter. The new name better represented the diversity of our Members and paved the way for continued expansion across the state of Arizona.

In 2010 and again in 2014, Vantage West expanded by merging with First Edition Community Credit Union and the former Tombstone Federal Credit Union. Despite explosive growth, Vantage West has retained its core mission of investing in our surrounding communities. Our Members are loyal to us because we’re loyal to them. As we continue to thrive, we are able to better serve our Members and communities so they may thrive too.

Ray-Ragan-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXRay K. Ragan, MAd (PM), PMP is the Assistant Vice President of Project Management for the Tucson-based Vantage West Credit Union. Prior to joining the Credit Union movement, Ray worked in defense and FinTech, bringing machine learning, intelligence systems, along with speech and predictive analytics to enterprise scale.

Ray holds a Master’s degree in Administration from Northern Arizona University with an emphasis in Project Management and a Certificate in Strategic Decision and Risk from Stanford University. He is a credentialed Project Management Profession (PMP) and has several Agile Project Management certifications.

Ray is a highly decorated U.S. Army Reserve officer, serving combat tours in Iraq and the Philippines and multiple mobilizations around the world.

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Joe Pusz, PMO Joe has a great discussion with special guests Eric Wright, CEO of Vets2PM and Trevor Stasik VP External Relations and Paul Martin, AVP Military Relations from PMI Phoenix.

As we honor our Veterans this month, we dedicated this episode to Project Management topics for our Veterans. We discussed the Veterans Project Management Mentoring Program offered by THE PMO SQUAD and Vets2PM. In less than a year this Program has over 100 participants across 30 states and continues to grow. To learn more about the Program visit: https://www.thepmosquad.com/veterans- mentoring.html

Eric shared his story which lead to founding Vets2PM and eventually on to building VetStone. Both of these organizations serve our Veterans in the Project Management space offering training, career services, and prep for certifcation. Thank you to Eric for his multiple tours of duty and now for providing tools and services to assist Veterans transitioning into civilian PM careers!

Trevor and Paul are both Veterans as well. Now with their roles within the PMI Phoenix chapter they are leading efforts to give back to our Veterans. Listen to hear Paul discuss the Project Language Learner initiative and plans to launch a Veterans Mentoring Program from the PMI Phoenix Chapter. Trevor shares his experiences in the military and how those activities and skills translate to his role as a BA and PM leading projects for the Make A Wish Foundation.

We honor our Veterans for the service they provided to our country. We get to honor a second time on this show for their service post military career. Eric, Trevor, and Paul are all Veterans who continue to serve, as Project Management Leaders working to assist our Veterans!

Tune in for upcoming shows with Project Management leaders discussing a wide range of current topics and events! Our next show will be November 15th with Dr Harold Kerzner and Belinda Goodrich.

You may also see them participating in other events ranging from job fairs to golf fundraisers.

This is the 40th anniversary for the Phoenix PMI Chapter and the year has been highlighted by a great series of speakers and educational opportunities including James Snyder, Harold Kerzner, Dr James Brown, and Steven Fullmer. The Chapter conducts dinner meetings every other month and has numerous breakfast meetings and social events.
