Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

Wood artist Doug Pisik was host Richard Grove’s guest LIVE from WORKBENCHcon 2022 in the Wall Control booth. Doug described the types of projects he does, including highly decorative wood boxes, custom work, and art pieces for galleries and events. He and Richard talked about his transition out of corporate work, his workshop, tool organization, and more.

Doug Pisik, Wood Artist

Doug Pisik has received awards in many juried exhibits of national artists, been part of over a dozen museum exhibitions, collaborated with other recognized artists, and he has accepted large commissions including several from Home Depot, Terminus Modern Ballet Theatre, and the Smith Gilbert Gardens.  He is classified as a “Master Woodworker” from the Woodworker’s Guild of Georgia. His work is collected by Tony and Emmy award winners, movie producers, CEOs, and other artists and can be found in collections coast-to-coast and in Europe and Israel.

His work is often composed of unique geometric patterns generated out of highly contrasting woods with a perfected technique called “Through-Pattern Construction” allowing complex patterns to pass from the outside through to the inside of his boxes and to the backside of his sculptures ensuring every facet is finely decorated.

Dyes and stains are typically avoided and instead, Pisik continuously searches for woods with naturally contrasting colors and tones to accent his work.  Some of his pieces are constructed with over a dozen species of wood and are composed of over a thousand pieces seamlessly joined together into a solid composition.

Caleb Harris, YouCanMakeThisToo

For Caleb Harris, making and teaching are two of his biggest passions, second only to being a husband and father.

YouCanMakeThisToo is about sharing what he has learned along the journey of making, whether that’s furniture, content, or business; and connecting with like-minded individuals who are obsessed with creating and sharing.

He was raised in a rural county in Tennessee with one of the poorest school districts in the country. His mother chose to homeschool him, and that allowed him to accelerate his schooling and do unconventional things, like spend four months working and living with various uncles were who professional contractors, and study during off time.

Caleb started college at Austin Peay State University shortly before he turned 17. In 2008, he graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice: Homeland Security and was commissioned in the Army as an Engineer Officer. After a year of training, he moved to Germany and immediately deployed to Iraq. Two years later he deployed to Afghanistan.

After redeploying from Afghanistan, Caleb moved back to the states and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri. After six and a half years of service, he decided to resign his commission to spend more time with his family. Ideally, he wanted to start his own business and be able to set his own hours.

In 2014, he moved to Memphis and started law school. His second year of law school he discovered content creation as a career option, which opened up a new world of possibilities.

Content creation would allow him to create his own business, make things, teach others, and support my family. In his third semester of law school he launched his YouTube channel and started learning how to shoot and edit video.

Caleb graduated law school with honors and went full-time operating YouCanMakeThisToo, and his commission business, The Custom Furniture Guy.

Dixie Seal & Stamp

Dixie Seal & Stamp was founded in 1897 in Atlanta. At this time the company made rubber stamps, corporate and notary seals, embossers, and engraved signs. One of the company’s first accounts involved making brass stencils, which were used on Coca-Cola crates.

In 1947, Stephen Schmidt returned from military service in World War II and at the invitation of Wrigley, his wife’s uncle, joined the company. Three years later Wrigley retired, and Schmidt purchased Dixie. At the time Dixie Seal & Stamp Company was located at 83 Poplar Street in Atlanta and had only six employees.

As of 1993, the Dixie Seal & Stamp Company boasted 90 employees, a 50,000 square foot complex of buildings, and the production of over 7,000,000 specialty license plates per year. Among these were plates for Disneyland, Walt Disney World, professional sports teams, schools, colleges, automobile dealerships, and other businesses.

Now, Dixie is enjoying its new location in Tucker, GA. The 114,000 square foot building is very accommodating to allow the fourth generation family business to continue steady growth and expansion of product lines.

Justin Mabie is a professional photographer and videographer who has traveled both domestically and internationally to shoot for names like The Offspring, Billy Ray Cyrus, Grammy award winners Goo Goo Dolls and Megadeth, as well as over 40 other chart-topping musicians. Following the music industry, Justin got involved in visual media work within the woodworking/maker community creating stunning videos for the biggest players in the game such as April Wilkerson, Bourbon Moth, and Anne of All Trades, to name a few. He currently works with April Wilkerson creating content for her social media accounts including YouTube and Instagram. On the side, Justin has also created his own YouTube channel of short documentaries that outline the lives and work of prominent individuals in the maker community which has garnered hundreds of thousands of views (https://www.youtube.com/callmemabie).

Call Me Mabie photography has been published within Roku, This Old House, Fine Woodworking, Quercus, Wood Shop News, and more. His video work has also been seen on History Channel and Assembly Required. In addition, much of Justin’s portfolio has been displayed on the promotional material, social media accounts, and websites of A-list musicians and artists.

Justin received a BA in Film and Digital Media with a concentration in production from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Originally based out of Orange County, California, he currently resides in Austin, Texas.

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

Located in the North Hills of Pittsburgh PA, “The Barefoot Forge” is a collective blacksmithing group owned and headed by Craig Cowan, a young self-taught blacksmith native to Pittsburgh.

Craig started blacksmithing as a hobby over 10 years ago, inspired by boredom and completely self-taught, has grown his experience and passion into a unique skill set that allows for incredible, custom, heirloom pieces made traditionally. With a bit of luck and lots of experimentation, the methods used to hot forge beautiful Damascus rings were developed and now The Barefoot Forge is thrilled to make awesome rings for awesome people!

To them, your ring truly is special. The very idea of creating a lasting, custom piece that’s unique and somewhat random inspires them to do the very best work we’re capable of. A Georgia native, Heather has worked in the insurance and financial services industries, as well as in customer service and sales. Mindy Sullivan joined the Simply Organized team in 2020.  Mindy comes with 20 + years of interior design experience and an aptitude for organization and spatial planning. She has a great attitude and fantastic work ethic!

Mindy is a professional interior decorator for over 20 years with clients across the country. She loves nothing more than helping a client feel good in their own space and keep it that way!  Her design background is from the Art Institute of Atlanta fuels my ability to make a space make sense while looking good in the process. Ethan Abramson Furniture

Started in Brooklyn, NY in 2008, Ethan Abramson produces its own line of furniture as well as custom commissions for residential and commercial projects.

Owner and head designer Ethan Abramson’s creative process allows for the materials to influence designs as much as the function does. This balance leaves pieces with a true sense of origin and purpose, something rarely seen in mass-produced furniture.

“The process of building a piece of furniture is just as important to me as how it looks in the end. All the solid wood I use had a story before it came to my shop. My goal is to build on that story, to see the characteristics in the wood and what it wants to become. I think of my work not based in machines and numbers, but as a completely creative process, as if I am painting.”        — Ethan Abramson

Today the shop is located in Long Island, NY, but the guiding principles are still the same. All furniture is handcrafted on-site, built using a blend of classic and modern woodworking techniques. Wood from reclaimed sources or sustainable foresting is used whenever possible. Pieces are protected with a hand-applied all-natural finish. Designs and shop practices are built around the idea of minimal waste, re-purposing, and environmentally conscious production methods.
