E89 Passion from Project Management with Ricardo Vargas

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Ricardo Vargas joins PMO Joe for an exciting discussion on the topics of Transformation, Crisis Management, Project Economy, passion in work-life balance, and more!

We talk about work-life balance and how we can manage having a life outside of work. The moment we reverse it to say it is a life-work balance is the moment we gain control and passion for what we are doing. Balance will fall into place because we realize what to prioritize. Ricardo talks about this further with Joe and describes “When you think that there is a work life balance, you are in some way saying that when you work, you don’t live. So, you need to stop working to start living. And for me, in the end, there is only life. This is my passion component.” -Ricardo

“At the UN, the projects are driven by an extraordinarily keen sense of how you can improve people’s lives through rebuilding cities after disaster or war-torn countries. On the other side, the environment is how can you help your client to save money? But in the end, both have the same intention to increase the efficiency of things we want to do.” -Ricardo

Specializing in implementing innovative global initiatives, capital projects and product development, Ricardo has directed dozens of projects across industries and continents, managing more than $20 billion in global initiatives over the past 25 years. Ricardo shares his expertise with millions of professionals around the globe through his “5 Minutes Podcast,” which he’s hosted since 2007. He has written 15 books on numerous topics and his influence on the sector was affirmed when he became the first Latin American to be elected Chairman of the Project Management Institute.

Prior to his work with Brightline, Ricardo was Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) Infrastructure and Project Management Group, leading more than 1,000 projects and $1.2 billion in humanitarian and development projects.

E88 Putting Agility into Governance with Fatimah Abbouchi

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours Fatimah Abbouchi joins PMO Joe for another fast paced discussion! They discuss the topics of Mental Health and Anxiety, Work Transformations, and Agile in the Australian landscape, even swimming lessons!

“When I realized it was the mindset shift that was holding me back, the fear, the anxiety and the mindset I was able to actually get really good. And I think I’ve improved to a point, if you throw me in the deep end, I probably could survive. Unlike in high school, where I nearly drowned.” -Fatimah Abbouchi

PMO Joe and Fatimah talk about the capability of the workplace and how covid has transformed the way of working. “It needs to be about the capability that we want to bring in and how we bridge that gap between the agile environment and the non-agile environment.” -Fatima. With 90% of the Agile training being received online and paid for the individual itself, the capacity in the workplace is shifting, forcing us to have a different set of capabilities to deliver value back to the company.

On top of that, increasing productivity and collaboration in a remote world, but how might we do this? “I basically say it’s about putting agility into governance, not putting governance into agile.” Fatimah Abbouchi

Listen to Fatimah and PMO Joe discuss further about these topics in E. 88 on Project Management Office Hours

E81 Gamification with Daniel Zitter and Hamutal Weisz

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Daniel Zitter and Hamutal Weisz join PMO Joe to discuss gamification concepts and their project management board games. We also hear the humorous story which brought Daniel and Hamutal together to form the PM Zone.

The fun dynamic explains ideas from their book Being a Project Manager that it’s what you have to do as a project manager versus what project management is. “The nature of a plan is to change; the nature of a project is to challenge us. In order to face those challenges and be the person who can lead a project to its successful conclusion, you need to be cool headed.” -Hamutal. Laying a clear path to explain an effective project manager in any project setting is the goal.

Focusing on the principles and practices of project management, they developed the idea of PMzone. Now, PMzone solutions provides all the knowledge and tools required for many professionals in any industry at all levels. To learn more about Daniel and Hamutal with PMzone, visit www.pmzone.com

Developed by project management professionals, the PMzone solutions provide all the knowledge and tools required by both experienced and occasional project managers. Whether a project has just landed on your desk, or managing projects is your full-time job, we’re happy to help you hone your skills through courses and games that offer practical tools to help you master project management

daniel-zitterDaniel Zitter loves project management, and he’s happy to tell anyone who will listen.

He appreciates the complexities of managing a project. He enjoys discussing it with others and teaching the methodologies, thought processes and how to deal with the questions and challenges that are sure to arise.

And he’s happy to share his knowledge and experience with clients, friends and acquaintances – because he believes deeply in what he does, how he does it and that doing it right makes a huge difference to the outcome.

Daniel is an experienced and certified project manager. He is a licensed industrial engineer and holds a Project Management Practitioner Certification “In Good Standing” from the Project Management Institute (PMI). He is also an accredited PMO – Certified Consultant, of the PMO Global Alliance, and was a member of the Jugging Committee for the 2019 PMO global awards competition.

Connect with Daniel on LinkedIn.

hamutal-weiszHamutal Weisz is a firm believer that project managers need to be stringent planners who adhere to strict deadlines and budgets, as well as free-flowing hippies who know how to dance around a problem and have enough flexibility of thought to solve things on the go.

She says “the nature of a plan is to change; the nature of a project is to challenge us. In order to face those challenges and be the person who can lead a project to its successful conclusion, you need to be cool headed.”

Experience helps a lot too. Hamutal herself is a vastly-experienced project manager who has managed multi-million-dollar IT and product development projects for different organizations around the world.

She is a senior lecturer and consultant in project management, but mostly she’s a serial entrepreneur and owner and partner of various international companies and initiatives spanning a wide range of activities.

E79 The Benefits of Diversity in the Project Management Community with Alana Hill

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, Alana Hill shares her story with us and we learn that although there has been some progress we still have a way to go with gender and racial diversity within the project management community. Alana and PMO Joe discuss the benefits of diversity within our industry and within your own career. What does your contact list look like? If they all are the same, how do they challenge you, but also allow for creative thinking? Alana shared, “The more we are aware of building relationships outside of our identity, the more we advance the cause of everyone.”

Alana shares the back-story for her book, What’s Your Catalyst, The Power of Managed Change. We learn the importance of a balance between IQ and EQ to improve team performance. We also learn the influence of coaches and role models on her life and the origin of her nickname, “Georgia.

E78 Building Project Management Communities with David Barrett

Everywhere we look we see the impact of Project Management. As the PM industry grows, a challenge we face now as project/program managers is how do we not get lost within the millions of practitioners and hundreds of associations and certifications around the world? As David Barrett has shown us several times, we can turn to smaller communities within the broader industry. Without a community, how might we navigate all this noise?

“As a community we can assist each other to see that the faster and better you deliver: the more connected with the business and strategy through the project piece; this conveys the meaning of how important we are.” -David

In this episode of Project Management Office Hours, David Barrett shares his story with us and the impact his communities have had within the project management industry. His newest community was born during the COVID pandemic as we isolated to our homes he found a way to keep us all connected with the launch of the project management video web site – ProjectBites.com.
