The Gwinnett Council for Seniors (GCS) encourages an active and informed senior citizen lifestyle for seniors in Gwinnett County. They serve as an active member in the senior community by developing and sharing information regarding activities occurring in a network of over 36 senior clubs and organizations countywide. As a 501(c) (3), the GCS encourages involvement on issues of interest to seniors by working towards improving the quality of life for essential services to the seniors of Gwinnett County. Their motto is, “Seniors Helping Seniors”.

Mission Statement of the Gwinnett Council for Seniors: The Gwinnett Council for Seniors shall be the representatives and serve as the ADVOCATE on the needs of all Gwinnett County Senior Citizens. This Council shall acquaint and keep the citizens and local government of Gwinnett County informed of the needs and concerns of all Senior Citizens and to encourage more involvement in the interest of the aging by working together with all concerned organizations and persons for a better understanding, quality of life and to seek financial support for essential services for all seniors of Gwinnett County.

The ALS Association of Georgia aims to empower, care for, and support all those living with ALS in Georgia, while advocating for a cure. The ALS Association is the only national affiliated not-for-profit health organization dedicated solely to ALS.

Since its founding in 1988, the ALS Association of Georgia has worked with ALS patients and their families to ensure the highest quality of life possible. The progression of ALS varies significantly from one patient to another. No matter a patient’s situation, the ALS Association of Georgia is available to provide vital services and reliable information.

Barbara Mooney/American Parkinson Disease Association GA Chapter

The American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA) was founded in 1961 to facilitate patient and family support, medical research and education. APDA carries out its mission through a network of chapters, Information & Referral Centers and affiliated support groups which provide education, counseling, assistance and referrals throughout the United States. There are now 65 chapters, 62 Information & Referrals Centers and more than 250 affiliated support groups from coast to coast. The Atlanta Chapter was chartered in 1985 to further the mission of APDA in the Atlanta area. The chapter was then changed to the Georgia Chapter in 2002.

The American Parkinson Disease Association has placed a vast emphasis on grassroots organizing of Information and Referral Centers, chapters and support groups. Since the initiation of Operation Outreach in 1983, the number of chapters, their efficiency, and the funds they have raised have grown dramatically. It is this grassroots structure that distinguishes APDA from other organizations serving people with Parkinson’s disease.

An estimated 1.5 million Americans have Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a slowly progressive brain disorder resulting in the loss of dopamine production. Dopamine is the neuro-transmitter responsible for aiding in body movements. Symptoms include slowness of movement, tremor, muscle stiffness, and postural instability. To date there is no cure.

After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, Wayne Huey continues to serve as a teacher and counselor and live a very active lifestyle. Wayne’s tips for coping with Parkinson’s:

1. Stay active and engaged both physical and mentally

2. Find a doctor who specializes in PD or movement disorders

3. Connect with others, keep communication open

4. Don’t let PD define who you are

5. Join a support group

6. Participate in clinical trials

Samantha is also on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Institute on Aging, which provides affordable, quality professional development for individuals working in the field of aging. GeorgiaCares is a volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased and factual information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. GeorgiaCares is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and SMP (formerly Senior Medicare Patrol).

Co-Authors Daphne Reiley and Joseph LaGuardia work with caregivers on a virtually day to day basis. Daphne provides spiritual support to caregivers in various settings – over the phone, in person, and in group settings. Joe is a full-time pastor at Trinity Baptist Church in Conyers, GA and offers caregivers support through one-to-one spiritual direction as well as being a resource for information about support groups in the area. The authors have created a website dedicated to their recently published book A Tapestry of Love: The Spirituality of Caregiving, providing their insights into the spiritual struggles facing caregivers as well as links to resources – both written and online.

In writing A Tapestry of Love, the two authors have provided a tool for caregivers in their spiritual journeys. Caregivers often have difficulty staying connected with God as well as often feeling isolated and prone to exhaustion, loneliness, depression, anger and resentment. Within its pages, A Tapestry of Love introduces spiritual practices helpful to caregivers and others in finding spiritual resources for the endurance and strength necessary to make the journey of caregiving a fulfilling one.
