LIVE from SOAHR 2023: Abby England, Abby England Wellness (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 642)

Abby England, owner of Abby England Wellness, joined host John Ray LIVE at the Business RadioX® remote at SOAHR 2023 to share her journey to becoming a certified wellness coach. Abby also discussed her presentation at the conference, “The Four Pillars of Health,” which are food, sleep, movement, and stress management. She also shared the five principles of nutrition, how to keep moving, and much more.

This show was originally broadcast live from SOAHR 2023, the annual conference of SHRM-Atlanta, held at the Gas South District Convention Center, Duluth, Georgia on March 28th and 29th, 2023. Abby England, Owner, Abby England Wellness

Abby England Wellness is a private health coaching practice that provides one-on-one coaching and group program facilitation to people who want to write their next chapter happier, less stressed, full of energy, confidently achieving their biggest health goals.

In its simplest terms, health coaching is helping people get from where they are today, to where they’d like to be. There is an enormous gap between wanting to be well and the everyday reality of our busy lives.

No two people’s life experiences, gene expression, and current lifestyle are the same so to improve one’s health, there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution.

That’s why at the heart of coaching is an individualized approach for each person.

Abby England’s newest chapter in her story is pivoting from a 15 year corporate career to becoming a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach and supporting others to achieve their biggest health goals. While this may read like a short story, overcoming her health challenges has taken several years. It’s been a gradual change of habits over many years. Small changes lead to big results. And that’s what she does together with her clients.

Abby is professionally certified and specializes in behavior change to support you in a highly personalized, collaborative setting that helps you achieve your health goals.

ReST Performance
Lloyd Sommers talks ReST sleep technology

Sleep Technology

This week we focused on sleep and sleep technology.  Lloyd Sommers, General Manager for ReST Performance came by to talk about how their company is addressing what is essentially an epidemic of poor sleep across our population.

The Better Sleep Council cites CDC data on the quality of our sleep, stating that poor sleep contributes to depression, weight gain, more disagreements with partners, and more.

ReST has developed what they call the world’s first smart bed, that uses technology to enable adaptation to the user.  The bed is made with a high-tech fabric that is able to detect where there is pressure, how much pressure it is, movement, and temperature.  The bed also connects with a mobile device to provide data regarding sleep quantity and quality, allowing users to track their progress toward improved sleep.

The ReST bed uses multiple air cells within the mattress powered by ultra-quiet pneumatic pumps.  When a person lays on the mattress, it senses where there is pressure and adds or removes pressure in the various cells, allowing the mattress to minimize pressure.  This means the user will be less inclined to need to change position frequently, allowing for longer periods of deep sleep.

Additionally, the ReST bed can interface with smart thermostats such as the Google Nest.  So, when the bed senses rising temperature, it can signal the thermostat to decrease the room temperature.

We were amazed by the technology of the materials in this bed as well as the variety of tech features it employs to facilitate more effective sleep patterns.  The ReST bed will be coming to retailers across the country over the coming months.

North Atlanta Pulmonary and Sleep Specialists

Sleep Disorders

It is estimated that as many as 35-40% of Americans experience poor quality of sleep secondary to a variety of sleep disorders.  We continued our series with Northside Hospital this week as I sat down with Sleep Medicine specialist, Dr. Robert Albin.  We talked about the statistics around sleep disorders and Dr. Albin discussed the serious accidents that have occurred that are thought to be related to sleep deprivation.  Some of those include:  Three Mile Island, the Exxon Valdez oil spill, Chernobyl, a recent ferry accident in NYC, and more.

Dr. Albin shared how poor quality and low quantities of sleep can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, poor mental function, depression, and others.  We talked about the process sleep specialists go through to determine the source of a person’s sleep disorder.  In many cases, the issue is borne out of mental or emotional stress rather than a physical/neurological  issue.  In those cases the sleep specialist will collaborate with a psychology/psychiatry specialist to help work through those causative issues.

For patients who have a sleep disorder related to brain chemistry/function or an obstructive process such as obstructive sleep apnea, the specialists have specialized tests they can conduct to determine the quality of sleep and determine the cause of the problem.  The sleep specialty team at Northside offers a variety of diagnostic studies/treatments and it was the first sleep center of its kind in the city.  For our listeners who are themselves or their loved ones are experiencing difficulty sleeping please take a listen to this week’s show and share it!  You might help someone you care about.

Are you a back sleeper, a side sleeper or a stomach sleeper? How you sleep can be affecting your health and the amount of sleep you’re getting each night.

  • Stomach Sleeper – Don’t sleep on your stomach – this can cause neck and back pain and keep you up all night tossing and turning to comfortable. It is especially dangerous for you if you are overweight and you snore or suffer from sleep apnea.
  • Back Sleeper – Sleeping on your back is okay. It can prevent back and neck pain if you prop your head correctly with pillows. It can help with reflux as long as your head is higher than your stomach.
  • Side Sleeper – Sleeping on your side is optimal. Left or right doesn’t really matter. With the proper pillow fluff you can sleep through the night easily without hurting your neck and back.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how to find relief from your heartburn naturally. Heartburn is a common ailment that effects lots of people – including my dad. A simple cure for heartburn is to sleep on your left side – this seems to ease the heartburn pain. Sleeping on your right side actually makes things worse. Sleeping sitting up works as well but is difficult to do. Try that and also avoid high fat, high sodium meals.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
