NeurosciencesDr. Marshall Nash is the founder and CEO of Neurostudies.net.  Dr. Nash is also Director of Stroke and Neuroscience Research at Gwinnett Medical Center.  His work focuses on cutting edge research around Stroke, Alzheimers, Parkinson’s diseases.  Dr. Nash became interested in medicine, particularly neurology, as a teenager when he was called in by one of the doctors to observe memory loss in one of his grandparents.  Now, he offers research treatments to many who might otherwise have no hope of relief from their disease.  Dr. Nash and his team can be reached at either 404-475-0552 in Decatur, or in their Lawrenceville office at 770-339-3312.  You can also visit their web site:  www.neurostudies.net.

Kiva Schindler began her career in healthcare working as an emergency room nurse.  During her tenure in the ER, she saw how critical timing was in treating stroke victims.  While still at Dekalb Medical Center, she met Dr. Nash.  Today Kiva is the Site Director for Neurostudies.net, managing nine research coordinators and five other staff members.  She is passionate about educating families about the importance of quickly recognizing signs of stroke and getting expert treatment within the first three hours after the stroke occurs.

Though one of the newer members of the team, Corie Lynn brings anotherimportant dimension to the Neurostudies team.  She is their Recruitment Specialist, and is charged with educating and advising families and patients that might benefit from the new treatment options being made available through the group’s reasearch work.  Corie is well prepared for this position, having earned a BS degree from Seton Hall, and working on both sides of the research fence, first at Merck, then at the University of South Carolina.  Corie and Kiva can also be reached at the numbers listed above.

No one likes to eat more than the Fat Guy and even he won’t eat any food where their is a chance he could die. But in Japan there are a lot of people who enjoy Fugu a poisonous blowfish that if prepared incorrectly can kill you.  Now I have been in a few restaurant kitchens and I don’t think I’m trusting the Bobby Flay of Japan with my life. We talk about other dangerous foods like hot dogs because they kill a lot of kids. Do you think the government should force hot dog companies to change the shape of their product to prevent kids from choking?  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Robert Davis, fitness journalist and author of The Healthy Skeptic. Today he shared some scientific truths about organic fruits, vegetables and meats. Organic fruits are those grown without pesticides and organic meats have not been injected with antibiotics and hormones. Today we ask the question are organic foods worth the extra money you pay for them at the grocery store? Robert is our resident health mythbuster. His health journalism background make him the perfect person to ask and answer these questions. His book The Healthy Skeptic: Cutting Through The Hype About Your Health is a must read if you get overwhelmed with information about heath, fitness, wellness and don’t know who is telling the truth. You can trust Robert. Regarding organic foods the questions you have to ask (and Robert answers in this interview) are: Are microscopic amounts of pesticides on fruits and vegetables bad for you in the first place? Is organic food healthier than non-organic food? And are organic foods safer for you? You’ll have to listen to find out. To get his book check out Amazon.com or go to his website www.everwell.com

Sara Burden, Walden Business

Sara Burden joined us last week and her tape is jam packed with great advice, so download and listen to Sara’s tape for a complete step-by-step guide to putting all the pieces in place for a successful sale that maximizes those multiples

But before we got into the details, Sara shared her insights on these volatile economic times and she has good news. She’s seeing more M&A activity since January of this year. Business owners are feeling like they’ve survived, she said—“The thaw has begun.”

Sara continued by discussing the not so intuitive idea that you should plan and work toward selling your business from the day you open your doors. You can do this by instituting best accounting, inventory management and quality controls practices in the early stages since what buyers look for are good, in-place systems. So—prepare your exit the day you open the door—and then stay on top of everything.

And if you didn’t do that planning in the first days, then what? Sara said that she likes to start talking to clients 1-3 years out from when they actually want to sell. That time frame gives her the best opportunity to assess the business and suggest and implement changes.

As part of the check list, Sara suggests that you eliminate items that don’t add value, such as obsolete inventory and underperforming employees. At the same time, she encourages clients to take actions that create value. For instance, update your website, something not many people would have thought of as recently as five years ago. These days, your website is another face of your company. It’s your digital footprint to go along with your physical one. Both must present the best image possible to buyers.  First impressions happen virtually as well these days.

She also stressed assembling the right professional team—attorney, accountant, business broker, etc. You want pros who understand your goals and objectives, and are willing to get on the same page with you. She said that you may have to sit them all down and say, “I want you to protect me, but I want you to get the deal done.”

And she noted that it could be that in buying or selling a company, you may need a different team than the advisors you’ve been working with. For instance, a transactional attorney, instead of a litigator. She also recommends that a seller hire a consultant who can help prepare the business for sale, prepare documents and do the negotiations. When the company is the seller’s baby, sometimes it’s a situation that’s just too emotional for the seller.

In addition to getting your advisors on the same page—you will need to be sure your family is too or the deal could fall apart at the last minute.  There are many more tips on Sara’s Podcast, so download it now.
