On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on Tara Costa, The Biggest Loser Season 7 finalist who lost over 150 pounds on the show. She also won a record setting 8 challenges, the most of any contestant in show history. Her story is truly inspirational and throughout her 18 weeks on the show Tara really showed her fans what determination looks like. Today, Tara stars in a couple of new Biggest Loser exercise dvds from Lionsgate. The Last Chance Workout and The 30 Day Jump Start.  She wants to continue to motivate and inspire people to lose weight and live a healthy life. She has been featured in newspapers, magazines and tv shows. And on our show Tara shared some behind the scenes stories of what it was like working out with Jillian and Bob on the ranch. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share Dr Fitness’ favorite pasta salad recipe. Dr Fitness loves pasta salad. He usually makes a whole bunch of pasta once and then uses it several times during the week in a variety of meals. For his pasta salad he mixes it with spinach, tomatoes, peas, and nuts then adds a healthy dressing over it. This recipe can be customized to only the foods and dressings you like. On today’s show Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy had on our good friend Matt Brzycki, Assistant Director of Campus Recreation and Fitness at Princeton University. Matt explained the dangers of weight lifting on swiss exercise balls, how to read supplement labels and the benefits of drinking chocolate milk after you work out.  We have talked about the dangers of working out with weights while laying on a swiss exercise ball but the message is not getting through – an NBA player hurt himself when the ball burst as he was pressing weights while on the ball. The balls may say they can’t burst but if you put enough weight on them they can. Using supplements when you are a college or pro athlete can be dicey – the labels may not include any ingredients that are banned but during the manufacturing process banned substances can make their way in. A study Matt mentioned said that up to 15% of supplements had some form of steroids in them. And lastly we talked about the protein power in chocolate milk that is not in other sports recovery drinks. Matt’s new book on Youth Fitness can be found on Amazon.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how too many anti oxidant supplements might be bad for you. There is some growing evidence that anti-oxidants in capsule form might impair muscle function over time. Ingesting lots of anti-oxidants might throw off the balance between the pro-oxidants in your body and cause problems. The research only looked at anti-oxidant supplements that might suppress some good stuff in your blood. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explain how Physical Education humiliation can affect you later in life. Did you know that being embarrassed in phys ed can haunt you later in life causing you to hate exercise and become less active. PE should focus on connecting physical activity with  fun for your child. But some PE teachers are frustrated drill sergeants and take that out on the kids. If you want your child to love activity then it might be a good idea to take a peek in his/her PE class. Make sure they are leaving some time for unstructured play and that the class is not too over organized.
