Young, Tim croppedTim Young is a Geriatric Care Manager for Piedmont Hospital’s 60 Plus Program.  Sixty Plus is a free service to patients of Piedmont Hospital.  Given the complex and sometimes bewildering process of navigating the after effects of a geriatric illness or injury, Tim and two other Sixty Plus geriatric care manager’s provide resources, advice and counsel to patients and their families on all manner of topics.  Tim shares his passion for helping seniors not only via his job at Piedmont, but also through the Alzheimer’s Association, the Atlanta Regional Commission, Lutheran Services of Georgia and through the Buckhead Christian Ministry (a community food pantry and emergency assistance program).  To learn more about these organizations, or Sixty Plus, contact Tim at timothy.young@piedmont.org, or call the Sixty Plus Helpline at (404) 605-3867.

Dunham, Kelly croppedOur next guest, Atlanta native Kelly Dunham, developed a passion for helping others through volunteer work in a nursing home as a youth.  Always energetic and athletic, Kelly has a dream job – she get’s paid to play with her patients.  Kelly would agree – she loves her job at Gwinnett Medical Center’s Glancy Rehabilitation Center.  As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, Kelly works with stroke patients, brain injury victims and many others as they try to regain a semblance of normalcy in their lives after their stay at Glancy.  Kelly even helps clients with their golf game!  One of her passions is her 2nd Thursday Stroke Support Group held at the Glancy center.  To learn more about Glancy and its programs, go to www.gwinnettmedicalcenter.com, or call Kelly directly at (678) 312-6167.

Kelleman, Wally croppedN. Wallace Kelleman, “Wally” to her friends, is nearly an institution in the Atlanta Elder Law community.  A lifelong student, Wally attended law school in the late 1980s, and graduated with two law degrees – one from Western New England College of Law, and one from Emory School of Law.  After 38 years as an RN, Wally recognized a gaping hole in the services available to Atlanta’s senior population, and formed The Kelleman Law Firm.  As one might expect, Wally spends time with clients helping with a broad range of issues, including estate planning and asset protection.  But more importantly, in Wally’s own words, she is “the conscience of the client or family.”  She is asking the difficult questions like, “who will support you when you are no longer able to support yourself?”  Wally can be reached via e-mail at attynwk@aol.com, or by phone at (770) 736-0369.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains why you should drink more pomegranate juice. As you may remember I shared the simple way to peel a pomegranate a couple of years ago. Click here to read how to peel a pomegranate Now Dr Fitness found research that says drinking pomegranate juice is also good for you – surprise surprise. Pomegranate juice is expensive but it is antioxidant rich and has been shown to inhibit some cancers. The fruit is only available a few months out the year in the late fall – early winter. So if you want your pomegranate fix year round then the juice is pretty much the only way to go. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share some of their favorite snacks. Snacking can blow up your diet faster than you can say Ben and Jerry. So when you choose a snack to eat during that mid morning or mid afternoon lull go for something that is nutrient rich but not too filling. Remember, a snack is just a little something to take the edge off your hunger pang until your next meal. Some good easy, quick and healthy snacks are: apple slices with peanut butter; a handful of almonds, walnuts or edamames; dried fruit; rolled up turkey with a bit of avocado or some hummus with carrots.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips. Sheridan, Pam croppedOur second guest, Pam Sheridan, came to serve seniors via an unconventional route.  Growing up an “army brat”, Pam came to Atlanta to work in interior design.  Originally becoming involved in hospice as a volunteer, she developed a passion for the work, and eventually took a position as Community Liaison for Compassionate Hospice of Northeast Georgia.  In addition to bringing a natural energy and exuberance to encourage her patients and their families, she hopes to soon bring her therapy dog, Justice!  Pam can be reached at 678-651-1440. Visit Compassionate’s website at www.chcmg.com.

Baskam, Stefani croppedStefani Baskam is also relatively new to the Senior Care industry.  Mother of three girls, she started considering returning to the workplace as her girls started to go off to college.  After confirming her gifts for service and hospitality through a spiritual gifts assessment, she began investigating various marketplace options.  A neighbor led her to an opportunity at the new Sunrise Johns Creek Senior Living Community.  Since it’s opening earlier this year, Stefani has served as the Community Relations Director.  To take a tour, stop by the community at 11405 Medlock Bridge Road, or call Stefani at (770) 814-0505.  You can also find Sunrise on the web at www.sunriseseniorliving.com.

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy explains the truth about laxatives. There are two kinds of laxatives used to relieve constipation – oral and rectal. Some people think that laxatives can be used for weight loss to help you cleanse your system. They really aren’t meant for this kind of use or any kind of long term use. A better way is to eat more fiber and drink more water. But if you are going to use a laxative pick a fiber supplement that is gentler on your body. Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
