Founders Club Radio on Business RadioX Features NFL Legend Morten Andersen – Business RadioX

October 1, 2015 by angishields

ATLANTA, GA–(Marketwired – October 01, 2015) – Founders Club Radio host John Coffin took part in the Vistage Executive Summit on September 2, 2015. Coffin brought the Founders Club Radio studio to the event and spoke with numerous participants and speakers about their roles in Vistage. Event Speaker Morten Andersen shared his wisdom on A Certain Kind of Stubborn, and joined Coffin afterwards for a one-on-one discussion about his life.

The 2015 Vistage Executive Summit focused on “Leading with 2020 Vision” and brought together folks across the business spectrum. The Summit featured a panel of speakers to challenge participants to think differently and help them gain clarity on the place their businesses hold in a rapidly changing economy.

Author, business owner and consultant Morten Andersen is the all-time leader in games played in the NFL and holds the distinction of being the all-time leading scorer in NFL history, spanning 25 years with the League. He talked of his early days with Coffin. “It started from pretty humble beginnings, an immigrant perspective,” said Andersen. “With passion, energy, effort and purpose, I was able to sustain a pretty long career with very good help from some great people. When you make the process and the journey great, the result becomes great.”

Andersen’s address to the Vistage Executive Summit, “A Certain Kind of Stubborn,” led participants through the six characteristics of the right kind of stubborn, and why raw, intense behavior is what it takes to succeed. In his discussion with Coffin, he went on to correlate the stubbornness he learned in the NFL to the stubbornness needed to succeed in business.

“I’m talking about the kind of stubbornness that gets you through situations where your back’s against the wall — my Special Teams Coach calls it ‘The World of Suck’ — and it is,” explained Andersen. “The road in front of you demands it.”

To learn more about Andersen’s distinguished career in the NFL and his recent business endeavors, listen to the entire interview on Founders Club Radio.

Clostridium Difficile
Dr. David Dickensheets, CW Hall talk Clostridium Difficile

Clostridium Difficile

On this week’s episode we talked about one of the leading causes of hospital-acquired infections: Clostridium Difficile, or “C. Diff.”  I sat down with Dr. David Dickensheets, infectious disease specialist with Infectious Disease Services of Georgia in his Cumming, GA office.

According to the CDC nearly half a million persons experienced a Clostridium difficile infection last year.  Their website explains:

“Approximately 29,000 patients died within 30 days of the initial diagnosis of C. difficile.  Of those, about 15,000 deaths were estimated to be directly attributable to C. difficileinfections, making C. difficile a very important cause of infectious disease death in the United States.  More than 80 percent of the deaths associated with C. difficile occurred among Americans aged 65 years or older. C. difficile causes an inflammation of the colon and deadly diarrhea.

Previous studies indicate that C. difficile has become the most common microbial cause of healthcare-associated infections in U.S. hospitals and costs up to $4.8 billion each year in excess health care costs for acute care facilities alone.  The new study found that 1 out of every 5 patients with a healthcare-associated C. difficile infection experienced a recurrence of the infection and 1 out of every 9 patients aged 65 or older with a healthcare-associated C. difficile infection died within 30 days of diagnosis.”

Clearly it’s a big problem.  Dr. Dickensheets shared some great information on how the infection is diagnosed and why it’s so hard to eradicate from a hospital environment.  He also talked about an interesting treatment approach–the fecal transplant.

That’s right, in some instances, patients have been able to resolve the infection by having fecal material from a healthy human instilled into their bowel, allowing a repopulation of normal flora bacteria that compete with the C. Diff., helping to eliminate the infection.

Honeycomb Cargo

Joe Parrilli / Honeycomb Cargo

Joe Parrilli is the product of a working class family who was born and raised in suburban Chicago and educated through the Catholic school system.  One of seven children, Parrilli is  a graduate of St. Norbert College and a 25+ year veteran of the Telecommunications and Energy industries.  His recent years in the energy industry were focused on the oil & gas market segment and alternative energy. In March of 2015 Joe had an epiphany.

After watching reports of devastating rail car explosions on the nightly news he designed the Next Generation Hazmat Packaging and Transport solution. The oil tank rail car design currently in use was developed 45 years ago. These single-entity legacy tank cars all have an inherent design flaw. Parrilli developed a revolutionary intermodal design that is very cost effective and will provide an order of magnitude improvement in safety and reliability.

Brad Avery / Honeycomb Cargo

Brad Avery grew up in a small central Illinois town, the middle child of a hard working pastor and entrepreneurial mother.  After high school and a couple years of pre-engineering at Illinois Central College, Avery joined the group Third Day and enjoyed critical acclaim. With a desire to use their God given platform for good, they shined the spotlight on relief organizations and mobilized their fan base to sponsor thousands of children through World Vision and build homes for families through Habitat for Humanity.

After nearly 15 years of touring, Brad came off the road and entered the chemical industry as a CAD designer, where he has spent the last 7 years. When Joe presented his brilliant honeycomb idea to protect cargo, the environment, and most importantly the lives of people in our communities, Brad wanted to join him in helping make this solution visible and viable to the world.

Harmonyx

Pharmacogenomics

This week on Health Connect South Radio we featured Bob Bean, CEO of Harmonyx, a technology company specializing in pharmacogenomics.  Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person’s response to drugs. This relatively new field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person’s genetic makeup.

As we have learned on previous episodes of the show, taking medications correctly is vital to achieving a positive outcome.  In fact, incorrectly taking a medication or taking certain combinations of medications can actually make you very sick or even kill you.

Add to that this fact–our genetic code can affect how our body responds to a given medication we’re taking.  For example, 30% of people who take Plavix, the popular anti-platelet medication to prevent stroke, get no effect from taking the drug due to a particular genetic mutation.  Consider the money spent by 1/3 of patients taking this medicine and it’s literally doing nothing in their body.

Harmonyx employs a non-invasive cheek swab which collects a DNA sample which is then tested for that individual’s genetically-driven response to a prescribed medication.  Depending on the results, it may be possible for the pharmacist and physician to identify another medication from that particular medicine family that will have the desired effect and/or avoid possible negative responses to the original med.

The test is available at participating pharmacies and can provide useful information for patients taking statin medication, ADHD meds, pain medication, and anti-platelet medication.  The test will reveal if the patient’s body will respond as expected or if they may experience adverse effects due to the way their body processes the prescribed medication.

In this way the patient is able to get medical treatment that is likely to have the desired outcome while avoiding probable negative effects and/or spending money and taking a medicine that literally does nothing for them.

On this episode I also shared the conversation I had with Ebola survivor, Dr. Ian Crozier, who was a keynote speaker at the 2015 Health Connect South event.  Ian was providing care to Ebola patients in Sierra Leone when he contracted the disease.  He had the good fortune of being flown to Emory Hospital in Atlanta for intense specialized care.  In spite of significant damage to numerous organs including kidneys, eyes, and even his brain, Ian survived and shared his poignant story with the attendees of this year’s event.

I was very pleased to get to meet him and speak with him for a few minutes.

Deb Beacham/My Advocate Center

Founder, Executive Director

My Advocate Center is building and offering solutions needed in each community, in each state in the U.S.A. and beyond. We are about improving family stability and seeing that the needs of children are met.

When families, especially single parents and children, become homeless it turns into a daily struggle to cover even their most basic needs so we are glad to feature Children’s Restoration Network and support their drive for school supplies, clothing and backpacks to help fill these voids for homeless children. As we grow and expand, we are engaging more organizations that work to prevent homelessness as well as to serve urgent and current needs in our communities.

Our work includes serving military and veteran families and children, as they often fall onto hard times during and after service, but our veterans are also a part of the solution. Positions are being created to put as many veterans and veteran family members to work as possible.

Our Professional Spotlight #onPAR serves the mission of uplifting families and children who are caught in conflict, whether it is before the breakup of a relationship, during divorce or child custody disputes, or after a legal battle when recovery and peace are needed.

Bold moves are being made to help parents understand how to better transition through & out of conflict, meaning we help reduce stress for children, and preserve family time & resources for their benefit.

Professionals who are like-minded are encouraged to connect and become a part of our Resource Directory. Please visit the Counsel for Change group page here on LinkedIn to learn more about our discussions. Our advisory panel reviews professionals to ensure certain standards are met. If you are focused on upholding ethics rules, professional duty, and are committed to helping children receive the best that both parents have to offer, let us know.

Our investigations, initiatives & strategies are also well suited to supporting government agencies in making necessary improvements to programs & services. It is important that these changes are made to better serve parents & children; but it is also possible to yield a positive economic return for each community & state.

MAC’s purpose in contributing to agencies & other organizations is to improve the divorce/child custody process in a way that leaves our communities stronger & better able to support the needs of children. We now have opportunities to lessen the impact of family violence, addiction & other dysfunction, while putting our financial resources to better use.

Connect | Inform | Empower

When it comes to guiding public policy to improve the process, and to helping parents navigate through high-conflict custody cases, no other collection of experts and resources is better positioned to give you clear and actionable insight.
