Huff Powell & Bailey
Dan Huff talks medical malpractice

Medical Malpractice Lawsuits

The phrase medical malpractice causes most people’s pulse to quicken. For a physician being named in a medical malpractice case is one of the worst events in their life. This week we discussed medical malpractice in Georgia and how physicians can avoid it.

For the past 23 years, Dan has specialized in representing physicians and hospitals in medical malpractice lawsuits.  As one of the founding partners in the Atlanta law firm of Huff, Powell & Bailey, LLC, he has represented defendants in more than 90 jury trials.

Dan has defended and successfully tried cases for every specialty of medicine and numerous hospitals throughout Georgia. His trial record would be a proud career for any defense lawyer and is remarkable because Dan has tried and won this many cases before turning 50.  Many of those cases have been against the best plaintiffs’ attorneys in the state. Dan is also a regular contributor to MAG’s quarterly Journal.

Huff shared what malpractice is, and why he chose this area of focus for his legal career.  He offered some advice on how healthcare practitioners can avoid a malpractice lawsuit.  We discussed his professional advice for how to handle conversations with patient and/or family after a sentinel event has occurred.  And we talked about how health professionals need to handle patient records and what to do if served with a lawsuit.

Dan explained how defendants in a suit should behave during the proceedings of the case to reduce the likelihood a jury will rule against them.

On the latest edition of DeKalb Business Today, host Matt Holmes explores the legal profession from two very different angles. Family law attorney Mindy Pillow joins the show to discuss her Decatur practice. From the other side of the bench, Judge Angela Brown talks about the challenges that come with wielding a gavel. Also, Cartridge World owner Ashish Gupta explains how his company is helping other businesses to increase productivity and save on their bottom line.

DBT

Ashish Gupta has a degree in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Emory’s Goizueta Business School.  Ash’s early career was as an IT consultant at Sapient before becoming an Operational Leader and General Manager at Brambles.  Both those roles taught Ash the importance of surrounding yourself with people who are focused on delivering the highest level of quality and service for their customers.  After 15 years in the corporate world where Ash was constantly traveling, he wanted to focus on an opportunity that allowed him to get involved with the local community.  That is when he bought Cartridge World of Decatur.

Cartridge World provides consumers and businesses cost effective, environmentally sustainable printing solutions. They sell printer cartridges for about 30 percent less than the retail price, recycle used cartridges and electronics, and provide shredding and printing services – all with a 100% guarantee.  For businesses, they even deliver the cartridges for free!

Federico “Fred” Castellucci/Castellucci Hospitality Group

President

11885161_1622313944695266_6855702729144203255_nA graduate of the Hospitality School at Cornell University, Federico Castellucci has worked in the restaurant business his entire life. During his tenure at Cornell, Federico helped create and develop the original Sugo in Roswell. He grew the concept to four locations including three franchises. After graduating in 2007, Federico took over a failed franchise location that is currently Sugo in Johns Creek, Ga. Federico worked tirelessly to re-establish the brand, and within a year and a half the restaurant had become the most successful restaurant his family had ever owned in Georgia.

Building on that success, Federico created a new restaurant concept from scratch in downtown Decatur called The Iberian Pig. A modern Spanish restaurant with a strong focus on imported Spanish cured meats, fresh local produce, creative tapas dishes, wines of the region and classic cocktails, The Iberian Pig has been a hit from opening night in late 2009.

Following the success of The Iberian Pig, Federico embarked on two more projects in 2011 and 2014. Located on Roswell Road near I-285, Double Zero Napoletana opened in May 2011, bringing the regional cuisine of Campania in Southern Italy to Sandy Springs, Ga. The menu features handmade pasta, traditional Neapolitan pizza, handmade pastries and gelato, as well as contemporary takes on classic Southern Italian dishes. In November 2014, Federico opened Cooks & Soldiers, a Basque-inspired concept located in West Midtown, featuring traditional pintxos, raciones, asador and desserts influenced by the signature cooking methods of the region.

Federico currently serves as president of Castellucci Hospitality Group, the management company that he created in 2010, which includes Sugo, The Iberian Pig, Double Zero Napoletana and Cooks & Soldiers.

AberdeenListen as Denise Lukow, RN Administrator and new Community Relations Manager, Josefina Bates, discuss with MaryJo, Sam and Lee, what sets Aberdeen Place Hospice apart and why the “H-word” need not be scary but bring comfort, dignity and peace to a very difficult, but inevitable part of life.

Aberdeen Place Hospice opened in January of 2014 and as they enter into the second half of their second year, they are more convinced than ever that Hospice can ease the journey to end of life like nothing else…  Their social workers, nurses and CNA’s help with paperwork , end of life decisions, give spiritual support and of course support the physical comfort of their patients as well as the emotional peace of their families and communities. They want people to know that Hospice is a federal and state benefit that anyone is entitled to! If you are unsure that your loved one would qualify for hospice care, give Aberdeen Place a call at 678-878-3440 and one of their nurses or licensed social workers will come do a free assessment.

At Aberdeen Place Hospice we are large enough to be professional and small enough to operate like a family. They serve 23 metro Atlanta Counties within a 20 to 25 mile radius.

Don’t make the end of life journey alone….Call Aberdeen Place Hospice at 678-878-3440 or Josefina at 404-900-4306 or find them on line at www.aphospice.com
