Founder

Buckhead Business Radio 01-24-15 Mary Margaret ONeillWhen MaryMargaret O’Neill was just nine years old, she founded the Kids Are Heroes® organization with some help from her dad. Intended to be strictly a father-daughter project, it quickly grew into something far bigger than just the two of them. Kids Are Heroes is an incubator for very young social entrepreneurs. By showcasing children who are making a difference in their community, they are empowering other children to enrich their own lives as well as the lives of others. They now boast more than 450 children on their website from 18 countries who are drilling water wells in Africa, building homes in Haiti, or simply filling up their local food banks. MaryMargaret has been featured on the site 5 times, for donating pajamas to the homeless shelter, food and blankets to the animal shelter, helping to clean animals from the Gulf Oil Spill, providing stuffed animals to young cancer patients and donating 250 pre-loaded MP3 players to children in youth hospitals. She is the spokesperson for Kids Are Heroes, delivering speeches all over the country to local civic groups and large organizations. She had an appearance on the Ricki Lake Show in 2012. She emcees all of our events. She is now a junior in high school here in Georgia and is also a nail artist, video editor/producer and all around teenager

Jake Johnson/Beaux Up

Founder

Buckhead Business Radio 01-24-15 Jake JohnsonRecently named the winner of Warren Buffett’s “Grow Your Own Business” challenge, Jake Johnson is stepping back into the entrepreneurial world with his patent-pending product Beaux Up. Jake and his sister are partners in their new business Beaux Up bow ties, an edgy twist on the classic self-tie bow tie where bow tie halves, made from upcycled vintage tie silk, can be interchanged on a unique clip allowing a completely customizable experience for the wearer. Jake was the creator of the Beaux Up idea, but he also enjoys marketing and the business of entrepreneurship. Jake is a tenth grader at River Bluff High School in Lexington, SC, but he has been involved in business from a much earlier age. At age 8, he and his sisters came up with the idea for Flipoutz, a silicone bracelet that holds coins that kids can trade and track online at flipoutz.com. As part of Flipoutz, Jake appeared on ABC’s Shark Tank and lived to tell about it! He and his sisters were also featured on PBS Biz Kids and were nominated for ChiTAG’s Young Inventor of the Year. No stranger to entrepreneurship and the working world, Jake started his career as an actor at age seven. Among his favorite roles are the youngest “Ricky Bobby” in “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” and “Lucas Moran” on six seasons of Lifetime’s “Army Wives.” Jake plays soccer and football, runs cross country and track, plays piano, and has been a national finalist in the National History Day contest in both the performance and the documentary categories. Jake believes entrepreneurial activities are an investment in the future and he enjoys sharing his ideas with other business minded kids. He is a part of Independent Youth’s Teen Entrepreneurship Network and he travels the country sharing his knowledge and experience with other kids. Because of the growing interest in youth entrepreneurship, Jake and his family are creating online training for young entrepreneurs and their parents. A favorite quote is by Warren Buffett who said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today, because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Jake’s future goals include planting more trees of his own while helping others kids do the same.

Mary Blackmon/FarmStarLiving.com

Founded by Mary Blackmon, Farm Star Living www.farmstarliving.com is the new lifestyle brand that celebrates American farming and farmers with a goal to satisfy Americans eager to know who’s behind their food, where it’s grown, and how to support local farmers and farm-fresh food. Farm Star Living has also launched its free Farm Star Living app, which provides easy, quick access to hundreds of Farm-to-Table restaurants in major cities throughout the U.S. as well as hundreds of farms open to the public for exciting activities and fun. The website, www.farmstarliving.com, also offers insight into the vibrant farm- to-table scene, including a farm-to-table finder, profiles on great restaurants, the symbiotic relationships between chefs & local farmers, seasonal produce with spotlighted recipes, and a look at what’s trending in the kitchen of chefs. Mary is a 3rd generation farmer from Arkansas, who left her hometown to pursue college and a career in advertising sales and marketing in Los Angeles, Atlanta and New York City. She worked for publishing houses and internet companies (Wired, Walt Disney Internet Group, Vivendi-Universal Internet Group). In NYC in 2002, she founded Spa-Addicts.com, the first national discount site for the spa & wellness industry. She grew it into a multi-million dollar business and a leader in the industry, and attracted hundreds of thousands of women as well as sponsors including Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, General Motors, Kimberly Clark, Allergan, American Express, et al. In 2008, however, she learned most of her family farm bordering Ark / LA would be sold. Not wanting to lose the family heritage and farmland her family before her had so cherished, Mary, along with the support of her brother Douglas, was adamant to preserve and keep the remaining farmland. She then began making changes in her life so that she could move from Los Angeles back South in order to keep, operate and run the farm. She bought back her grandparents house and renovated it, and discovered that “saving the family farm” had changed her life forever – and for the better. Today she admits that she is happier than ever & inspired, loving the farming business and now launching Farm Star Living, which she felt compelled to create for the good of farming and the people she has met along her new path. She hopes that Farm Star Living will provide farmers the respect, acknowledgment and support they so deserve and attract new farmers as well as support the current ones.

Most of us think of dentistry as routine: teeth cleaning, period Xrays for cavities, fillings and the occasional crown or root canal. However, there is an a very specialized area of dentistry that handles such issues as hospital dentistry, dentistry for special needs children (autism, Down’s Syndrome and developmental delays) and dental trauma. These skilled dentists receive rigorous additional training in oral-maxillofacial surgery. It is rarely thought of until it is needed. Many of these procedures are performed in a hospital setting to care for medically compromised patient or patients with adjunct and compiled medical conditions. They treat patients requiring reconstructive surgery, implants, injuries to the head, face and neck.

Please join us as Dr. Albert Baawo educates us about the world of “specialized” dentistry! Listeners can learn more at www.tooth11.com.

Two of the most important demographic trends that will impact the workforce are the growth in the number of workers with eldercare responsibilities, and the growth in the number of workers with both childcare and eldercare responsibilities.  In fact, 35% of workers face daily eldercare responsibilities at some point during a given year.   This caregiving results in employees being absent from work and less productive while on the job.

Veronica Woldt, a gerontologist and owner/principal of Corporate Eldercare Solutions, www.corporateeldercaresolutions.com, joined the show to discuss these growing trends and the business issues surrounding them.  Ms. Woldt not only identified the affect that these demands have on the employer; but she provided some insightful solutions.  To hear our inteview with Ms. Woldt, click on this link:  Good Health 07062010 Interview.MP3.

The hosts also asked Veronica, “What has she found as the most successful engagement strategy to help corporation address the productivity and health issues related to eldercare concerns?”  To hear her mult-step recommendations, click on this link:  Good Health 07062010 Engagement.MP3.

Finally, on the show’s health tip segment, Dr. Dave and Steve offered advice from a new book, 35 Things to Know to Raise Active Kids, on volunteering with the elderly.  Find out more about the book and how to share this family tip on this link:  Good Health 07062010 Tip.MP3
