Ken Coleman/Focus On The 5

Pod Guest Series Episode 1

Focus on the 5

“Focus on the 5” is dedicated to the insights and identity of 5%ers  (entrepreneurs, risk-takers, early adopters, business owners…)I go in detail on:
Why and how to market to 5%ers.
How to spot them in a crowd and the benefits of being able to.And I begin to open a door for each of you to better understand, and hopefully embrace, how you fit into this broader philosophy as 5, 15, 30 and 50%ers.The opportunities for companies and individuals who learn why they need to be focusing their time and energy on the 5%ers are immense.

The financial, spiritual and psychological benefits for every one of you to better understand this fundamental component of who you and those around you are, and the core of how we make decisions, is staggering.

5%ers are the trendsetters in all purchases, all industries, all decisions. It is not a choice they made, rather it is who they are.  Once you learn how to spot a 5%er who has embraced who they are, they stand out like a blinding light in a crowd.

This philosophy will change the way you do business. It will change the way you view choices and decisions. Those of you who are 5%ers and have not yet learned to embrace it, I believe this book and learning to understand yourself as a 5%er may very well save your life.

I can hardly wait to meet you, teach you and hear your story.

Lacie Bowden/ A Legal Breeze
Owner/Lawyer

A true local, Mrs. Bowden was raised on Pensacola Beach with her mother, step father, younger sister and younger brother. She attended Pensacola Beach Elementary School and Gulf Breeze Middle School and High School. She attended Pensacola Junior College, now Pensacola State College, full time her senior year of high school as part of the dual enrollment program. After graduating from high school, she attended Florida State University on an academic scholarship. While attending FSU, she was employed and was on the Level Co. Dance Team. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mass Communications and a minor in English. She attended law school at Barry University School of Law in Orlando. While attending Barry, she received her honors certificate in children and family law. After graduating law school, she took the Florida Bar Exam and became licensed to practice law in Florida. She then began her first position as a practicing attorney at the Office of the Public Defender in Escambia County. As a Public Defender, Mrs. Bowden practiced criminal defense, where she represented over 2000 defendants. She gained great experience in and out of Court, handling misdemeanor and felony cases. After three years as an attorney at the Office of the Public Defender, she began her career in private practice at a small, local firm. There, she practiced Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury and Wills, before deciding to open her own firm, Lacie Bowden Law.

Mrs. Bowden lives in Pensacola with her husband and their four pets. She still enjoys many of the same activities that she grew up doing, including lounging on the beach, surfing, paddle boarding, boating, fishing and strolling the beach on her bike. She loves spending time with family and friends, who are all a huge part of her life. She also enjoys dancing, photography and traveling.

From the time Mrs. Bowden was in elementary school, she always had an interest in becoming an attorney. Her parents divorced when she was very young, so Family Law had been something she wanted to do from very early on. She wanted to help everyone involved in a divorce, whether it was the parents, children or extended family. She truly understands the aspects of divorce, which gives her a special connection with her clients in that particular area of law.

It is Mrs. Bowden’s passion to help others, whether it in Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury or Wills. And, it is a pleasure and commitment for her to serve the people of the community that she loves.

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

  • Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.
  • Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We have produced 4 editions of this print magazine. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips. Our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication, however the magazine is currently on hold as we explore graphic designers. Our latest edition can still be found on our website.
  • Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2018, our conference will be held on Wednesday, October 17th and Thursday, October 18th, 2018 at Sanders Beach.
  • Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

Convenient

No long drives in traffic to start your adventure (unless you want to). Choose from a large selection of our favorite launch points all over the Emerald Coast, Choctawhatchee Bay, rivers, bayous, or dune lakes. If you’re staying Gulf-front, we’ll come to you!

Value-Packed

Your Green Fin guide will be photographing your entire excursion. After your tour, your photos are made available to you digitally at no additional cost. No watermarks, they’re YOURS!

A Home Run

When looking for fun things to do on vacation, families often struggle to find common ground. Our SUP tours have something for everybody, so the entire crew can come together and create memories that will last a lifetime.

About Our Tours

Green Fin Paddle Company’s tours are a unique experience (no matter your skill level) for everyone to enjoy. You’ll get to stand-up paddle board at any of our beautiful locations on the Emerald Coast. Whether you choose to adventure the bayous, Bay, or Gulf you’ll have an experience you’re entire group will remember forever.  We’ll even supply you with the photos taken by your guide of your one of a kind excursion.

Inexperienced? No problem! We’ll teach you what you need to know and as always, guide you along the way.

If you’re looking for something a bit different and exciting, or need to decompress while peacefully connecting with nature, a Green Fin paddle tour is just the adventure you need!

Start Time

This is the time we meet to begin our tour.  We recommend arriving a little early, in case there is confusion on where to park and where to go.  If our launch point has public restrooms (most do), this is last call to use it!  Your guide will be in touch with you well before the day of your excursion to go over where we will specifically gather at first, as it is unique to each location.  Do not bring valuables to the launch point.  There is usually not a secure place to leave them.  We advise that aside from your flip flops, you show up with only what you plan to take on the water.

We will issue boards, paddles, leashes, and PFDs to everybody, and will gather at the waters edge to go over safety procedures and current water/weather conditions, discuss the plan for our tour, and do a quick gear check.  We’ll address any questions you may have and give some pointers for rookie paddlers, then we’ll hit the water!

Launch Time

This is the time we hit the water.  For sunrise paddles it’s about 30 minutes before the sun appears, right at first light.  For sunset paddles its about an hour before the sun begins to set.

We’ll cruise around for a while exploring and learning about the area, and settle into a good spot to hang out for a while while the sun does its thing.  Then we’ll begin heading back, keeping an eye out for dolphins, turtles, fish, and any other cool things we can find!

Landing, and Post-Tour

Except for our multi-day tours, we’ll always land at the same place we launched from.  We’ll gather up the equipment, and double check that we have accurate contact info for the head of your group.  You see, we’ve been taking tons of pictures this whole time, and will be uploading them to Google Photos within the next 24 hours.  We’ll send you a link to access them, which you are free to disburse to anyone you wish.  The photos are yours, so you can download them, edit them, print them, and anything else you want to do with them.  The only editing we’ll do before posting them is to delete the ones that are obviously garbage, and occasionally straighten an image.  We take a TON of photos while we’re out there, so there are always plenty for the album.

At that point, your tour will be complete!  We may follow up with a request for a review, and will hope that you enjoyed yourselves enough to tell a friend!

HISTORY

Pensacola Little Theatre has been providing live theatrical events to Pensacola for nearly 80 years. Our organization was formed in 1926 by a group of individuals at the San Carlos Hotel. The organization performed dramatic theatre for three years before the Great Depression. In 1936, after a period of “dark years,” the organization was reestablished through the Works Progress Administration (WPA), which created theatre companies across the country as part of the federal government’s recovery program after the Great Depression. Called the Civic Drama Players in the beginning, the organization was incorporated one year later as Pensacola Little Theatre, Inc.

PLT’s early performances were held in the old Chamber of Commerce auditorium and later at Pensacola High School. By 1949, the Board of Directors developed a plan for a home that Pensacola Little Theatre could call its own. In January of 1952, the first show opened in the Quonset, and our all-volunteer productions continued there through the 1970s.

Our Family

In 1998, my parents, Stylianos (Steve) and Alice Vatsolakis, moved myself and my two sisters, Chrissoula and Katerina, to Pensacola, from Crete, Greece, to purchase Shoreline Foods from Mike Gavallas. My father, Steve, is a FAA Authorized Inspector by trade and is now the Aircraft Maintenance Officer for the Civil Air Patrol while my mother, Alice, retired from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and, upon retirement, supported my father’s decision in purchasing Shoreline Foods by handling all the business’ finances and books. In 2000 they started importing our Shoreline EVOO and it quickly became a product you could find in most kitchens of Pensacola and the surrounding area. Since then, my father has introduced countless products from Europe and the Middle East.

In 2002, I joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in San Diego, CA where I met the love of my life, Maia. In 2006 and 2008 she blessed me with our two gorgeous girls, Lucianna and Ellynne and after five years in the Corps and three tours to Iraq I ended my enlistment. We decided to stay in San Diego for another seven years, at which time we were presented with the opportunity to take over the amazing business Mr. Mike and my father created. In 2014, Maia and I moved our family to Pensacola and started the transition. It took almost 2 years for us to feel ready to take over and in July, 2016 we purchased the business from my father and made it official.

Since moving here, in 2014, my father and I have introduced many new items, including the Greek olive bar, our own brand of wines from Crete, Greece, a great selection of craft beers, and others. Now that my wife and I have taken ownership we plan on improving even more and are very excited about sharing our improvements with all of you.

My parents worked very hard to take care of each and every customer and his/her needs. We plan on working even harder to not only accomplish the same, but also to bring out all the potential this business has, so it can be even more enjoyable for everyone.

We appreciate all of your support and hope to continue being the local grocery/import store you’ve come to love.

Sponsored Special Episode With CopernicusMD

The cost of medical procedures and insurance-related expenses continues to rise. Patients are
increasingly expected to pay a larger sum of money at the time procedures are performed. More
than 60 percent of employed Americans are unprepared for an out-of- pocket expense of $5,000
or more. The market for financing in medical procedures continues to evolve with new lenders
entering the space each year. Each lender has a very specific credit profile which they seek from
potential patients/clients. Managing these options is time consuming and frustrating for both the
provider and the patient.

CopernicusMD queries a patient’s ICD-10 codes against their insurance to determine how much
they will be responsible to pay out-of- pocket. It offers qualifying patients the option of financing
their medical expenses. CopernicusMD (instead of practice staff) takes on the responsibility of
managing the billing and collection of those payments. CopernicusMD pre-qualifies patients for a
loan if they need one. It also matches patients with lenders. CopernicusMD is not a collection
agency; it is a finance solution.

Go to www.copernicusmd.com or call 877.356.4712 or send an email to
info@copernicusmd.com for details.

Dr. Ellen Shaver is the chair of CopernicusMD. After 25 years as a board-certified neurosurgeon,
Dr. Shaver knew there had to be a better way to manage practice cash flow, patient billing
notifications, carrier approvals, and collections. Her desire to enhance practice operations as well
as the patient experience led her to form CopernicusMD.

Don O’Neill is the executive managing director of CopernicusMD. Don is responsible for the
execution, launch and roll-out of the CopernicusMD platform in the private practice and facility
and public and government services sectors. He has a wealth of experience in both consumer-
facing technology solutions and project management. Don previously served as the general
manager of CreditMiner LLC, where he successfully launched a cutting-edge platform for
consumer credit in loan transactions and enabled the company to obtain full reseller status with
the three major credit bureaus.

Dr J Leonard Lichtenfeld of American Cancer Society Talks Cancer In 2017

This week I hosted Dr. J. Leonard Licthenfeld, Deputy Chief Medical Officer, with the American Cancer Society (ACS).

We have made considerable progress over the past 25 years in the treatment of cancer. Unfortunately
we still are not able to help enough people survive.  There are many elements that have made this success possible, including research, education, access
and advocacy.

However, we still have a long way to go. Prevention, screening, access to high quality
care, appropriate support through palliative care programs, and investing in research are all important
parts of the cancer continuum.
We have seen exciting advances in cancer treatment recently, with a better understanding of the
genomics of cancer leading to targeted therapies, the introduction of new immunotherapies which have
offered hope where little existed previously, and even newer treatments which have been effective in
treating patients who have failed all other available therapies (such as CAR T recently approved by the
FDA for the treatment of a specific form of leukemia).
All of this comes with a cost: research—including innovative, basic research—has to be supported. We
need to find ways to get more drugs more quickly from the laboratory to the bedside, we have to
wrestle with the cost of new drugs, which can sometimes be so prohibitive that patients and families
can’t afford them, and we have to recognize that not everyone has access to the best and most
appropriate care resulting in disparities throughout our state nation that must be addressed.
