Laura Ann Hart/ President,  Quickie Coupons, LLC

Laura Ann Hart is a true “Georgia Girl!” Having been born and raised in the South, Laura has taken “southern hospitality and customer service” to a whole new level in her young and vibrant sales & marketing company Quickie Coupons!  “First Class is Free” has been her philosophy and building blocks that she hangs her pearls on every day! Over the past 8 years Laura has sold over 40 million dollars in goods and services and continues her “Pursuit of Excellence” Vision in everything that she does.

Laura Ann created a company in a downturn market that is helping businesses survive and thrive with the simple introduction of coupons into their marketing plan. Since the beginning of Quickie Coupons Laura Ann has increased overall sales by 55% in year two and another 35% in years three and four. Quickie Coupons has consistently maintained a 94% customer retention level – all without long term contracts. In February of 2011, Quickie Coupons became an official Franchisor, with a federally registered trademark and the ability to sell franchises throughout the country.  Laura is currently in the process of opening up Quickie Coupons Roswell in September of this year.  Quickie Coupons was a finalist for business of the year in 2010 and 2011.

Before starting Quickie Coupons, Laura spent five years as a Top Producer with RE/MAX Unlimited where she learned the true value of helping and serving others. Under the mentoring of Pam and Gerry Rogers, Laura was able to make the transition from stay at home mom to an award winning Top Producing Agent. During her real estate career Laura helped hundreds of clients buy and sell property.  Laura received the “Rookie of the Year” Award in 2005, earned the #1 Top Producing Individual Agent in 2006 & 2008, #3 Top Producing Individual Agent in 2007 and was also honored with the RE/MAX 100% Club Award four years in a row.  Laura also had the privilege of writing a monthly real estate column in the local paper sharing her experiences and best “tips & tricks” on how to navigate the real estate world.

In 2012, Laura was the President of the Kennesaw Business Association (the largest non-chamber business association in the state of Georgia), a board member for the Acworth Business Association and a character education teacher at Kennesaw Mountain High School.  In 2013 Laura graduated from the esteemed Leadership Cobb Program.  Currently Laura serves as a director/ past president for the Kennesaw Business Association and participates in several committees dedicated to improving our local community and helping businesses grow.

Giving back and taking care of their community is a must for Laura and her family. The Hart’s have actively participated and contributed to several charity and service organizations ranging from “Shop with a Hero Programs”, Carrabba’s Culinary Cook-off, Must Ministries, Calvary Children’s Home, Hayes Elementary Food Pantry, Kilometer Kids, Northstar Church Volunteers, NJROTC, Boy scouts, One Call Foundation, Susan G Komen Breast Cancer, Northstar Couples Group Leaders, ARC (Atlanta Recovery Center / Homeless Shelter) and MDA. Teaching their children to “give back” has been a priority for both Laura and her husband Eric. Laura and Eric recently celebrated their 21st wedding anniversary. They have three children, Joshua, Alexandria and Jeffrey and live in Acworth, Ga.

Laura received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Shorter College in 1997 and her Associates of Arts Degree in Fashion Merchandising from Bauder College in 1990.  Laura holds and maintains a Georgia Real Estate Sales Person License and is certified in several areas of scuba diving.

What a magical day in Booth 61. My HUNTER Technical Resources family celebrated the 15th anniversary of Atlanta’s Premier IT Staffing Firm and talked about the past and future of IT Staffing. Clint Bailey, Tracy Bailey, Alex Brown, and Scott Hall gave a great overview of how they started with very little in one of their apartments 15 years ago and how they are now one of Atlanta’s most respected and successful IT Staffing firms. The host talked a little more than he should but he just could not help himself. I have worked in a lot of industries and for a lot of interesting companies over the years even including an IT Staffing firm. I have not worked for a harder working group of young people with more integrity, character, and sense of fair play than Hunter Technical Resources. You will hear each of the four partners share their insight about what they attempted and what they accomplished. They all have a little different perspective but the story weaves itself into a beautiful quilt of many colors, people, clients, candidates, and just as importantly, our community. Hunter is the most generous company of its size in this industry, bar none.

The partners also gave a history of the IT Staffing industry in Atlanta. They have witnessed first hand remarkable changes these past 15 years and they see more changes in the near future.

You will also hear about a few of the not for profit organizations we support in our community. We are proud of what we have been able to accomplish as a team. Lives have been changed from the contribution of time and money from the Hunter team.

As you can see, the host is having just as hard a time writing the recap without inserting himself into the action as he had during the recording of the show. As Bobby Brown sang long before he married Whitney, “It’s My Prerogative”. 🙂

I don’t recall when I first was introduced to Joan Herbig. However, I do know that once I met Joan and became aware of all she has accomplished, I joined a large group of people in the technology community that hold Joan in high regard and with great respect. Joan will give you a glimpse of why I personally feel this way in this interview from Booth 61 on June 19th, 2013

Joan is currently CEO of ControlScan, which will be her next great success story. Joan is a former Chairman of the Technology Association of Georgia (TAG). Joan has created a blueprint for what it takes to be a successful female entrepreneur while keeping her husband and children at the forefront of her life. Joan is the definition of balance. I started to list a few of my favorite take aways from this interview and soon realized that the preview might take you longer to read than just listening to Joan tell you herself so that is what we will do. You will be entertained, inspired, and I believe motivated to make changes in the way you approach business and during our closing minutes Joan shares a couple of really important tips for your career.

June 12th was a very special Booth 61. This was our first show with out of town guests. My good friend for the past 2 years and the Founder of Four Athens and the Four Athens Angel Fund brought one of the companies currently in the Four Athens space. Athens, Georgia is on fire with new technology and a new Angel Fund. Jim Flannery is one of the most interesting people I have met since I began making Athens my weekend home this past two years. Jim has a pulse on all things entrepreneurial in Athens and he has built a solid team of investors, board members, and advisers. I met Art for the first time on the 12th and later served Art and his family a delicious Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt at AthFest in beautiful downtown Athens. Art and his partner have created a unique technology which will help schools create a more favorable climate for success. Their company could be a change agent in the education system in Georgia and across the world.

You will be amazed to hear Jim and Art share great stories from the Classic City, Athens, Georgia. UGA and the entrepreneurial Eco-system in Athens will be something the State will be hearing more about in the very near future. You will have the inside scoop ahead of the pack.

Thank you Jim and Art for driving down and spending an hour sharing your wisdom, insight, and wit. It was a blessing having you in the studio.

Tino Mantella and Ricky Steele in Booth 61

It was an honor to have my good friend and CEO of TAG, Tino Mantella in Booth 61 for a lively discussion. Tino has been instrumental in moving the Technology Association of Georgia from a solid association to a fast growing national powerhouse for the Georgia Technology Community. TAG is involved in issues that matter to our community from raising awareness to lobbying at the State legislature, increasing the talent pool in Georgia to more educational events than imaginable.

Tino is a force in our community and this interview gives me reason to be very excited about the future of the the technology industry in Georgia.

  3. When you choose to volunteer, be sure you are being best utilized.

  4. Be flexible in balancing life & career.

  5. The greatest benefit of formal education is personal development.

  6. If you want a big outcome, why utilize a small approach?

Listen in as Mark and Kevin describe strategies and resources to nurture and leverage your entrepreneurial desires. Add their insights, tips and resources to your leadership toolkit. Leadership IS a conversation!

Mark Bell/ Chief Strategy Officer & Chief Executive Officer, Brand Bank

Mark R. Bell, D.Phil., M.St., was formerly Chief Operating Officer for the sister company of Brand Bank – Brand Properties, a real estate and development firm. In these capacities he has led a number of transactions including the purchase of US Premium Finance, a national premium finance company, the establishment of the Villages of Gwinnett Stadium (noted as the “Deal of the Decade” by Atlanta Business Chronicle), and the build out of a consumer finance partnership with The Home Depot. He also underwrote and bid over $1.2 billion of distressed loans, largely held by the FDIC, which resulted in the successful purchase of nearly $250MM of loans and the later establishment of a note buying fund (NoteSouth). Dr. Bell led the $200MM recapitalization of the Brand Bank by a group of investors including the Carlyle Group, the Stephens Group, and the Cousins family office. Subsequent to the recapitalization, he helped lead the Bank to nearly 30% annual loan growth. Dr. Bell is also currently a Research Fellow and Adjunct Professor of Finance at Emory University’s Center for Alternative Investments, where he teaches on a range of “frontier” investments.

Prior, he was the director of strategy and a private equity investor at D. E. Shaw & Co., which by the time of his departure had become the world’s largest hedge fund. Dr. Bell was directly involved the fund’s rapid expansion into illiquid investing—he played an integral role in establishing a “side pocket” in the fund which became an engine for investing in alternative energy assets, international real estate, and traditional private equity and venture capital deals. He also helped to launch the firm’s efforts in reinsurance. He became an integral part of the private equity team and he went on to lead transaction work in wind energy, clean coal, and biofuels. Dr. Bell also worked at McKinsey & Co. where he was involved in the then rapidly deregulating energy industry.

Dr. Bell was the valedictorian of his Stanford Class, graduating with a 4.0 and honors, and received a Marshall Scholarship to study at Oxford University where he received his doctorate and masters degree and was both a Jowett Senior Scholar and the Vice Chancellor’s scholar. In Oxford he also served as a college lecturer at Balliol and Christ Church Colleges. He is also the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship. He is the author of one scholarly monograph, six peer-reviewed articles, and several book chapters. He is on the boards of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, England, the alumni association of Trinity School, Woodruff Arts Center and MAP International.

Dr. Bell is a member of the board of Councilors at the Carter Center and is a member of the U.S. Marshall Scholars Selection committee.

JOC on Chic Perspectives

Today on the Chic Perspectives Show, we shined the Chic Spotlight on The Joy of Connecting.  My guests were Bonnie Ross-Parker, CEO/Founder of The Joy of Connecting, and The Latina Joy of Connecting,  and 2 of the many Joy of Connecting Licensees – Annette Walden Mason, of Painted Lady, Enterprises and Carole McNichol of Kylen Financials Inc.

Bonnie – A seasoned speaker/author and creator of a national/non-membership organization called The Joy of Connecting.  With 27+ years of networking experience, Bonnie’s focus is to support entrepreneurial women, professionals and business owners with her customer acquisition/marketing model.

Annette Walden Mason has a background in customer service and sales.  She is a marketing solutions consultant, entrepreneur, speaker, and facilitator. Her company is Painted Lady, Enterprises. She helps businesses with their relationship marketing both online and off line.  Annette is also one of the contributors for the book ‘42 Rules for Effective Connections.’

Carole McNichol is a Financial Adviser with Kylen Financials with over 22 years experience in the insurance and financial services, specializing in helping women to feel comfortable with their finances and empowering them to take charge of their financial future. Carole currently holds the following licenses series 7, 65, 63, variable, life and health.

Bonnie talked about how she identified a need in the market for Joy of Connecting while at Mail Boxes Etc. and why she decided to move forward with the business – 8 years later it is thriving and growing.

With so much emphasis on on-line marketing, or ‘social media’ as many people call it, Carole talked about why she thinks it’s important to also have off-line marketing.

It is very important for businesspeople to have off-line marketing in addition to an online strategy. The industry that Carole serves does not allow me to do any social media to advertise her business. It is a highly regulated industry and all print advertising must go through compliance.  Seminars that have been her largest marketing tool – and with all the networking and connections she makes through The Joy of Connecting – she’s been packing the room at her seminars.

Annette talked about some of the off-line opportunities available today – There are lots, BNI (Business Network International),  The local chambers of commerce, PowerCore, and a number of local types of groups both open and closed.  The ladies talked about what make the Joy of Connecting experience so unique in comparison.

Bonnie touched on some of the differences between the genders when it comes to networking.

Bonnie, explained why she decided to add another networking venue to the marketplace.  Even though there were already several women’s organizations in place, with The Joy of Connecting, the format, style and flexibility make it a truly differentiated opportunity to meet new people in a way that fits a busy woman’s schedule.

Since the ladies are involved with The Joy of Connecting – they described how the meetings work and what they each derive from participating.

Carole talked about how The Joy of Connecting has been and continues to be a unique marketing tool for her. She has used it as a way to gather an audience to market her financial seminars. Instead of trying to sell to her networking group  she asks the women to help her invite other women for an educational fun event. By giving these events it as made a significant difference to her business. She has also helped women within her group by helping them to showcase their expertise within the events.

The more we talked about the benefits of this connecting experience, it’s apparent just how special it is.  Layers upon layers of benefits.

Annette said that what she most wanted was to develop relationships with other entrepreneurial women.  Over the years these relationships have helped to grow her business and have also turned into wonderful friendships.  It is a warm and nurturing environment.  Women who are just starting a business and come to a Joy of Connecting always commit about how at ease they felt.

Carole talked more about some of the benefits for women to participate at a Joy of Connecting event.

Annette, added in some great Zig Ziglar wisdom – reminding us that   - People want to do business with people they know like and trust.  It’s about building the relationship.  She related networking to what Zig Ziglar says about motivation and taking a bath….you can’t do it just once and expect it to last.  She recommended finding places you feel comfortable networking and keep going on a regular basis.

Bonnie explained more about the licensing opportunity for someone wants to own a license and offer The Joy of Connecting in her community, the first thing she should do is check out the information on the website and fill out an application to be part of this great organization.

We talked about the reach and ripple effect The Joy of Connecting has had on Atlanta business community and far beyond.

LIsten to the replay and visit the websites to find out more about these fabulous ladies and The Joy of Connecting with them.   www.TheJOYofConnecting.com, www.TheLatinaJOYofConnecting.com and www.BonnieRossParker.com
