For the past fifteen years, he has served as a court appointed attorney and guardian ad litem for incapacitated adults in the Fulton County, Georgia Probate Court.

Adam Gaslowitz, Ronnie Genser, Jeff Scroggin, Craig Frankel

On this episode of “Wealth Matters”, hosts Craig Frankel and Adam Gaslowitz discuss how to anticipate and avoid issues at the “administrative” stage of estate planning with their guests Ronnie Genser and Jeff Scroggin.

Ronnie Genser/Bereavement Navigators

Prior to founding Bereavement Navigators in 2012, Ronnie Genser’s professional background included over 25 years in international and domestic sales, marketing, training, and consulting. In addition to her sales and marketing career, from 2006-2008 Ronnie served on the Board of Directors of the Lewy Body Dementia Association. As a board member and subsequent volunteer, over a five-year period (2006-2011) she created the organization’s support group network of almost 100 support groups, which spanned 36 states and the province of Ontario, Canada. This support group network continues to provide families and care givers the resources to cope with the life changes wrought by Lewy Body Dementia, an incurable, progressive disease that currently ravages 1.3 million Americans.

Ronnie’s successful career path took an unexpected turn after the sudden death of her husband, Dr. Sandy Weinberg, an Associate Professor of Healthcare Management at Clayton State University, as well as an internationally-renowned FDA Regulatory Affairs consultant to the pharmaceutical, medical device, and biologics industries. He died unexpectedly on October 8, 2011 at age 61, after complications from a heart attack, having spent two days in the ICU at Northside Hospital in Atlanta and seven days in the cardio-vascular ICU at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

The things Ronnie learned about what she needed to do after Sandy’s death including how to organize the numerous and unexpected tasks, the resources she found, and the tips she learned, she now shares in her work as a Bereavement Navigator with other widows, widowers, adult children, and other relatives who have lost a loved one, in hopes that her knowledge will make this process and the journey ahead easier for them.

Because Ronnie’s experience also taught her that being well-prepared before a death is one of the greatest gifts you can give a loved one, she also works with healthy couples and individuals to prepare, or in some cases better prepare, their affairs before their own deaths. As a result, Bereavement Navigators offers them and their loved ones the priceless gift of peace-of-mind, knowing the potentially myriad tasks their loved ones will face after their death will be much easier, less time-consuming, and most importantly, less stressful.

In 2009, Mr. Moebes started Moebes Law, LLC and has passionately represented the injured ever since. In fact, he has recovered millions of dollars and won the right to countless medical procedures in the course of his representation of injured workers and veterans since starting his firm. He is active in the National Organization for Veterans’ Advocates, the Workers Injury Law and Advocacy Group, and numerous local and national bar organizations.

Mr. Moebes has been named a “Rising Star” by the Georgia “Super Lawyers” organization, an honor given to 2.5% of attorneys in their practice field as voted upon by their peers. He has also been named among the “Legal Elite” by GeorgiaTrend magazine. He has lectured at the Georgia Trial Lawyers annual convention, the “Fundamentals of Law Practice” course at Georgia State University College of Law, and the “National Return to Work Week” radio show.

When not practicing law, Lieutenant Colonel Moebes serves as a Medical Service Corps officer with the U.S. Air Force Reserves. He has deployed three times in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom: twice to Balad Air Base, Iraq and once to Andrews AFB, Maryland. In the course of his decorated military service, he has facilitated the aeromedical evacuation of thousands of wounded warriors, and he participated in the Jessica Lynch rescue mission in 2003.

Jeanne Canavan/County DA Office

Jeanne Canavan has been with the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office for twenty years, and she currently heads the white-collar crime/elder exploitation unit. Under Ms. Canavan’s leadership, the unit has aggressively prosecuted “travelers”, fraudulent repairmen, professional caregivers, investment advisors and family members who have victimized elder citizens. Ms. Canavan has lectured on elder exploitation to attorneys and judges both in Georgia and outside the state, and she frequently speaks to senior citizens to educate them about how to avoid being scammed.

Paul Black/Brannon + Black

Paul Black’s experience as the son of two parents with big health challenges is what led him to the work he does today. His mother has wrestled with Parkinson’s Disease for more than two decades. His father suffered a major stroke in May 2001. Paul’s active involvement in their care gives him first-hand knowledge of the challenges that many caregivers and family members face.

While attending Georgia State University College of Law, Paul gained invaluable experience interning at the two senior-oriented divisions of Atlanta Legal Aid Society, the Georgia Senior Legal Hotline and the Senior Citizens Law Project. After graduation from GSU Law, Paul was chosen from dozens of applicants nationwide as one of three 2010-2011 Borchard Foundation Law & Aging Fellows.

After completing his fellowship in late 2011, Paul launched his own private practice. He joined Chris Brannon to found Brannon+ Black in January 2014. Today, Paul finds great satisfaction in serving clients across Georgia who need help with elder law issues (including Medicaid & Veterans Benefits eligibility issues, guardianships and conservatorships), estate planning and administration, and special needs planning. Paul is the Young/New Attorneys member of the editorial board for the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) News, the monthly news magazine for elder law attorneys.

From her early years, Victoria Collier has had a passion for serving the senior community.  As a high school student, she worked as a nurse’s aide in a nursing home.  She wanted to go to college, so she enlisted in the Air Force, where she served for six years during Desert Storm.  When she got out of the military, she went back to finish her Psychology degree at Valdosta State University.  Not sure what to do with that degree, and having served as a paralegal, she decided to pursue a career as an attorney.  She enrolled, and ultimately earned her law degree from the University of Nebraska.

Today, Victoria is the Principal in the Elder & Disability Law Firm of Victoria Collier.  Her offices are in Decatur, and she specializes in Medicaid Planning, Veteran’s Benefits Planning, Special Needs/Disability Planning and Estate Planning.

Victoria has a particular knack for making complex ideas and processes simple.  Listen in as she provides some very clear information on Veterans Aid and Benefits.  For more information, visit her website at www.elderlawgeorgia.com, or call her office at 404-370-0696.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.
