Using Public Safety Tech to Improve Community Relations E23

What technologies are law enforcement agencies and private-sector businesses adopting to protect public safety through a more informed lens? How can these entities implement these technologies effectively to produce more equitable outcomes, particularly for communities of color? And finally, which decisions should be made by humans and which ones can be made by AI?

The February 2022 episode of the Arizona Technology Council’s TechCast podcast featured public safety experts including Lauren M. Cziok, public safety senior manager at Accenture; Jason Hartford, vice president of Axon devices at Axon; Gretchen Peri, senior director at Slalom and Robin S. Reed, co-founder and principal at EmFluent, LLC and president and CEO of the Black Chamber of Arizona. These leaders joined Steve Zylstra, Council president and CEO, and Karen Nowicki, president and owner of Phoenix Business RadioX, in exploring technology’s role in public safety and how new innovations can help first responders make better-informed decisions in real time.

Throughout this hour-long episode, this panel of public safety specialists explained the recent evolution of public safety technologies to emphasize racial and social equity. They acknowledge that historically, law enforcement has been slow to change, and hasn’t always progressed as quickly as it needs to in order to respond to society’s needs.

From the very beginning, Vantage West Credit Union existed to suit the needs of the community. In 1955, we started in a one-room barrack at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base with the mission to help Tucson’s airmen and their families. Back then, the humble DMAFB Federal Credit Union, as we were then known, served a little under 600 Members and had less than $60,000 in assets. By the end of the 1960s, we had already grown to nearly 14 thousand Members, sowing the seeds for the rapid growth we would see in the decades to come.

Vantage West got its current name in August of 2006, when the Board of Directors gained regulatory approval to convert from a federal to a state charter. The new name better represented the diversity of our Members and paved the way for continued expansion across the state of Arizona.

In 2010 and again in 2014, Vantage West expanded by merging with First Edition Community Credit Union and the former Tombstone Federal Credit Union. Despite explosive growth, Vantage West has retained its core mission of investing in our surrounding communities. Our Members are loyal to us because we’re loyal to them. As we continue to thrive, we are able to better serve our Members and communities so they may thrive too.

Ray-Ragan-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXRay K. Ragan, MAd (PM), PMP is the Assistant Vice President of Project Management for the Tucson-based Vantage West Credit Union. Prior to joining the Credit Union movement, Ray worked in defense and FinTech, bringing machine learning, intelligence systems, along with speech and predictive analytics to enterprise scale.

Ray holds a Master’s degree in Administration from Northern Arizona University with an emphasis in Project Management and a Certificate in Strategic Decision and Risk from Stanford University. He is a credentialed Project Management Profession (PMP) and has several Agile Project Management certifications.

Ray is a highly decorated U.S. Army Reserve officer, serving combat tours in Iraq and the Philippines and multiple mobilizations around the world.

On this show, Ben and Jennifer reflect on the interview during the last show with Chuck Peck, MD President and CEO of Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. Dr. Peck had described for viewers the difference between a consumer and a patient, and the priority Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center has put on their employees in order to effectively position their health system to become the preferred provider for consumers.

It is an approach outlined in the book “The Patient Comes Second”, written by Britt Berrett and Paul Spiegelman, which Dr. Peck shared had a big impact on his thinking. The outcome is that Piedmont Athens Regional has progressed from a low of 2% on the Press Ganey employee opinion survey to a high of 65% in three years, as they committed to bring all employee positions to living wage levels as well as focusing on other employee-focused initiatives.

In the deep dive, Ben and Jennifer springboard from Dr. Peck’s example describing the effective employee engagement flywheel approach, relating how this approach builds customer loyalty around the measures that matter. Other deep dive topics include a description of servant leadership, authority versus responsibility, and effective accountability.

This is a second concept-packed discussion regarding Performance Excellence in the Age of Consumerism that you will not want to miss!
