Sugra Naqvi and Varun Jhanjee talk IT

Stellar Consulting Solutions and Orange Theory Fitness

Today I had the pleasure of talking to Sugra Naqvi and Varun Jhanjee, founders and consultants for the growing boutique technology consulting and staffing firm, Stellar Consulting Solutions, LLC.  I also caught up with CEO/Founder of Orangetheory Fitness, Dave Long to talk about their very effective approach to helping their members achieve a higher level of fitness, regardless of their fitness level when they start.

Varun brings seventeen years of experience beginning as an engineer moving rapidly into the technology field working with several major Fortune 500 companies and has been in the Atlanta area for the past fifteen years.  I

Sugra makes contacting Stellar Consulting Solutions personal….letting potential clients/clients know she is only a click away from a response through any chosen media…a rarity in today’s depersonalized business world.

Our guests are two upwardly mobile entrepreneurs who saw a growing need in the business community: maintaining traction in the rapidly changing world of IT. Using their combined business acumen, they developed Stellar Consulting Solutions to help businesses alleviate the stress and strain of staying current in the IT world; imperative in today’s market.

SCS, LLC specializes in the IT field offering a resource pool of experts to assist on technology projects, provide experienced consultants, and deliver end-to-end recruiting staffing solutions, and the list is only the beginning of what this company can offer. Concentrating on the H2H factor allows Stellar to bring the right solution with the right talent to its clients. Varun feels the importance of not only providing quality IT answers but takes their expertise into the personal realm allowing companies to blend their needs with Stellar to build the perfect profile.

Sugra shared that Stellar Consulting assists those in the job seeking market to connect with companies looking for people to fill sort-term projects, fill full time positions, or fill contract jobs. Because the resource pool for specialized IT professionals is limited, SCS can offer businesses the freedom to concentrate on business while SCS provides quality staffing to respond to the data driven issues that arise daily.

Sugra and Varun also foster diversity in the workplace, as Stellar is a minority business enterprise (MBE). Authenticity matters to SCS. Our guests shared that SCS can bring the personal and the professional into the IT field of constant change and guarantee quality results.

Stellar Consulting Solutions also addresses specialty areas: ERP Systems Database, Social, Mobile Analytics, Cloud Project/Program Managers, Infrastructure technologies to name a few.

A little over a year ago, a long-time friend of mine began talking about Orangetheory Fitness.  I had heard of the fitness concept brand before but as I watched my friend’s physical and personal transformation before my eyes, and heard her rave about her experience with them, I wanted to learn more.

David Long graduated with a degree in Physical Therapy and an MBA from the University of Florida. David has an extensive, successful past as an entrepreneur and visionary. He has had management roles with GNC, Massage Envy VP of Operations, and is Partner and Founder of Orangetheory Fitness.

David has been immersed in personal fitness since he hit the retail scene in 2001 as a Director of Operations with Lifestyle Family Fitness. Reviewing David’s extensive professional background, it is apparent why he again is instrumental in leading the fitness industry to a unique new concept: Orangetheory Fitness.

Orangetheory Fitness combines interval, cardio, and a floor workout into a one hour session. What sets this concept apart is focusing on the individual working out within a community and using a Heart Rate Monitor for each client. Each studio is a “boutique fitness” location. Studios are conveniently located, franchise driven, and staffed with hand-picked experts in a variety of fields. Clients are exposed to a non-intimidating climate, a community, and can quickly blend in, therefore, removing the stigma of being “different” because they are newbies, walked in from a sedentary life style or have no clue about the world of physical fitness.

Personal is a key word at Orangetheory Fitness. Someone can go from zero experience in working out or be a seasoned fitness buff. No one is competing with anyone else: an important component to individuals hesitant to even walk into a fitness location.

Orangetheory Fitness empowers members to have more control over their effort level by having clients wear a Heart Rate Monitor (HRM) to track progress while working out. We have all heard “Get that heart rate up!”, but Orangetheroy Fitness makes tracking the heart rate an active component. Clients work toward a target zone that stimulates metabolism, increases energy, promotes extra calorie burn for up to 36 hours post-workout.

Clients WANT to return to the Orangetheory Fitness studio; the dread, lack of visible results, and overly aggressive tactics are gone. Simply stated: it works.

You can hear Dave Long’s Orangetheory Fitness interview on its own below:

World-Class Fitness

in 100 Words:

“Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: Deadlift, clean, squat, presses, C&J, and snatch. Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics: pull-ups, dips, rope climb, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstand, pirouettes, flips, splits, and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc, hard and fast. Five or six days per week mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”

Exercise is Medicine

Exercise is Medicine

This week we focused on the value of physical activity to our overall state of wellness.  We were joined in studio by Dr. Felipe Lobelo of Emory University, Mike Tinney, of Fitness Interactive Experience, and JP Matzegheit, of Wahoo Fitness.  We talked about the physiologic importance of physical activity along with innovative technologies that facilitate inspiring people to get moving.

Physical inactivity now ranks as the 2nd leading cause of mortality in the world. However, too few health systems and health care providers include physical activity (PA) as part of the prevention and management of obesity and chronic diseases. For 5 years, the Exercise is Medicine (EIM) initiative of the American College of Sports Medicine has helped build local networks to support the systematic inclusion of PA in health care in the US and more than 40 countries in 5 continents via the “EIM Solution”, an evidence-based approach to assessing patients, prescribing appropriate PA and developing community-based PA resources linked to health services and public awareness. The

Large-scale implementation of the EIM Solution across different populations, settings and health care systems is a complex process. The EIM-GRCC serves as a coordinating center for EIM implementation projects by offering state-of –art consultation research and evaluation support, training, policy, cross-national networking and management dimensions of EIM programming to support the initiative.

Fitness Interactive Experience (FIX) has developed a tech platform that incorporates a video game-inspired approach to motivating people to walk and engage in brief periods of other physical activities.  FIX provides their application to businesses seeking to improve the health of their employees for use over 6-8 weeks as a fitness challenge.  The application uses the popular zombie theme to get the user to walk more each day.

The application interfaces with wearable fitness devices such as FitBit to track physical activity such as walking/running.  In order for their character to survive in the game they’ll have to walk while wearing their fitness device to “walk/run” their character to safe zones.  The early data from their initial challenges has shown promising statistics regarding the level of participation and engagement by employees using the application.

Wahoo Fitness produces a range of wearable fitness devices designed to give feedback on a variety of physical activities and bio data.  The sensors enable athletes to become more efficient runners, swimmers, and riders through the use of accelerometers in the sensors.  Additionally, users can train smarter by monitoring heart rate instead of subjective rating of perceived exertion (RPE).

Users are able to compare current training session against previous sessions to evaluate number of reps, cadence, and other training data.

PUGLIESE NICHOLSON

Start Exercise Fitness Training Without Injury

This week, our new monthly partner, Dr. Andrew Pugliese stopped by to introduce us to Randy Nicholson, of Fitness Firm Studio.  He’s a certified trainer who shared some very helpful information on how folks who have not previously trained or former athletes who haven’t trained in a while start exercise fitness training without injury.

As a former athlete who has experience in high intensity and high volume cardiovascular and weight/resistance training, I know too well what it’s like to resume working out after a prolonged layoff and experience overuse injuries.  These come from a burst of activity with or without heavy weight/resistance.  Too much exercise too soon can easily result in a incapacitating measure of pain or even injury that prevents continuing without another break to recover.

Randy shared what a person who’s motivated to start or resume training should ask a prospective personal trainer to determine what their philosophy is regarding the initial training phase.  He also shared the value of using a roller to help facilitate muscle recovery as well as releasing trigger points that can cause muscle spasm.

We talked about the best way to approach beginning training in a step-wise fashion to insure that muscular imbalances, postural weaknesses, and flexibility have been improved upon before moving on to more intense training moves/activities.  If you or someone you care about is thinking about resuming or wants to start exercise fitness training without injury they need to check out this week’s episode.

Fitness is one of many facets of your life that effect your immune and central nervous systems. Studies have shown that individuals who workout 2-3 times a week are happier and have more energy.

TITIN introduces TITIN ForceTM, the world’s only weighted compression shirt system. TITIN Force layers eight pounds of hydro-gel inserts across major muscles of the upper body, creating a HyperGravityTM training environment for workouts and athletic training without restricting body movement. The three-part shirt system features a 14-pocket shirt, 14 hydro-gel inserts and a moisture-wicking compression shirt to firmly hold the flexible gel inserts in place.  Detailed information and images are available at TITINtech.com.

TITIN Force is a unique form of workout gear made up of three components. A 14-pocket inner shirt features A.M.Y.® antimicrobial materials to block odor and germs. Patented, fit-right, hydro-gel inserts are inserted into the pockets to provide eight pounds of weight during workouts. Third is an outer compression shirt that’s double-stitched and features Sorbtek® to pull moisture away from the body four times faster than other fabrics. The compression shirt securely holds the gel inserts firmly in place during the most strenuous workouts.

Along with enhancing workouts, The Force can be worn hot or cold for post workout regeneration. Heated or cooled, the indestructible hydro-gel inserts retain their flexibility for maximum comfort during workouts. Simply place the TITIN Force in a microwave or freezer and it transforms into a 45-minute hot compress or mobile ice bath.

Wearing a TITIN Force during workouts or most any type of sports training creates a HyperGravityTM training environment that can help with weight loss, muscle building, improved balance and increased speed. Wearing a Force shirt system prior to competing, or “pre-loading”, can deliver measured results. Testing has shown TITIN Force can provide up to a 13% increased vertical leap, an 11% increase in endurance and a 3% increase in running speed.

Patrick Whaley, founder of TITIN Tech said, “I set out to create a weighted shirt that could be comfortably worn during football practice, CrossFit training and most any other type of workout without restricting body movement. That’s what we accomplished. Wearing a TITIN Force is like training on earth and playing on the moon.”

TITIN Force is currently being used by many professional athletes, trainers and members of the military, including NFL wide receiver Michael Jenkins, Herman Demmink III, University of Tennessee’s Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach and Mr. Justice Scholes, Physical Training Instructor, Royal Air Force.

The eight pound weight of TITIN Force was determined by safely adding 2-5% of body weight to an individual weighing 160-180 lbs. Hydro-gel inserts can be added or removed to adjust the weight of a TITIN Force. Both the 14-pocket inner shirt and outer compression shirt are machine washable for easy care. The TITIN Force is sized from small to XXL.

About TITIN Tech: TITIN Tech is a company focused on designing form-fitting, weighted workout gear that enhances performance without restricting natural movements. The company was formed by Patrick Whaley, who was awarded 1st place and People’s Choice Award at the 2010 Georgia Tech InVenture Prize for his weighted compression shirt system. The company’s debut product, TITIN Force is worn by NFL stars, CrossFit champions, MMA fighters, professional boxers, pro golfers and military personnel.

Awards:

TITIN’s award-winning product has won over $70,000 from business plan competitions to assist in commercializing his technology. In 2012, TITIN won $10,000 from the Under Armour Innovation Challenge. Prior to that in early 2011, his technology also won the “Most Fundable” award and “Most Bankable” award at the GT Business Plan Competition and Rice Business Plan Competition (the largest business plan competition in the world), respectively. He also won the “Outstanding Product of 2011” at Global Venture Labs in Austin, Texas. His products were also dubbed “The Next Big Thing” by CNN. Such competitions also included winning 1st Place and “People’s Choice Award” in the GT InVenture Prize competition 2010.

Since all movement burns calories – it goes to reason that fidgeting can help you stay fit. But you better be doing a lot of it every day. This kind of incidental physical activity helps but is no substitute for exercise. Sorry but shaking your leg when you watch TV doesn’t replace a cardio workout. But if you park farther away or take the stairs instead of the elevator you will burn more calories and every calorie burned is not one around your waist making your jeans tighter.
