State Priorities

Health Insurance and Affordability

  • Ensure public and private health insurance options, including those under the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid, provide affordable access to the physical and mental health services, medications, devices technology, and education necessary to meet the needs of people with diabetes and prediabetes.
  • Oppose efforts to repeal or create loopholes in laws in 46 states and the District of Columbia mandating diabetes coverage in state-regulated insurance plans.

Discrimination

  • Safe at School: Ensure students with diabetes are medically safe and have access to the same educational opportunities as peers without diabetes. Legislation and regulation focus on:
    • Permitting students who are able to do so to self-manage their disease.
    • Making sure trained school personnel are available to perform routine and emergency diabetes care tasks.
  • Law Enforcement: Support efforts to train law enforcement officers about diabetes.
  • Driver’s Licenses: Ensure laws and policies for private and commercial licenses result in fair treatment of people with diabetes.

Health Disparities

  • Specific initiatives to reduce the disparate impact of diabetes in minority communities.

Prevention

  • Primary prevention of type 2 diabetes for individuals with prediabetes and in the general population, including efforts to reduce obesity and improve nutrition and physical activity.

Diabetes Programs and Surveillance

  • Funding for Diabetes Prevention and Control Programs and other diabetes public health programs.

State Coordination on Diabetes

  • Initiatives to assess the burden of diabetes and to develop and implement policy recommendations.

Nancy Bullock-Prevot retired from the Navy after 21 years as a Chief Petty Officer, in Cryptologic Technician Collection (CTRC). Her last command was the USS SOMERSET (LPD-25), named after flight 93, which was the last of the 9/11 ships. As a plank owner and first Chief CTRC onboard the USS SOMERSET (LPD-25), she assisted in the building of the Operations Department and OT Division.  As the first Chief for the OT Division she served as principle advisor to USS SOMERSET’s Commanding Officer and the Operations Officer on their security programs and cryptologic matters.

As a retired United States Navy veteran with over 20 years of service Chief Prevot wanted to continue serving her country. As a woman veteran, she believes that women veterans are the ones who are often forgotten. “People forget that women served just like their male counterparts and fall on their luck in the same way”. Prevot wanted to do something to help women veterans that are struggling with varieties of obstacles that have led them to homelessness, knowing that could have easily been her.

In August of 2016, Prevot founded The H.E.R. (Honor, Empower, and Rebuild) Foundation, which she formed to help homeless female veterans who are single. HER is ready to help the homeless female veterans by providing affordable housing and other services that may lead them to establishing successful futures.

Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well. Out of that lunch was born what is now a thriving not-for-profit organization for business women.

Kolleen currently serves full-time as the Founding Director of what was originally called Women’s Business Lunch and is now known as Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast. The organization advocates a culture of confidence building, lifelong learning, collaboration, empowering others and a spirit of charitable giving.

The mission of Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is to promote, advance and improve women in business and the organization accomplishes these in a number of different ways.

–            Monthly networking meetings in Pensacola and Gulf Breeze. These are open to all women and are free to attend. We run a structured meeting with open networking, an educational segment, a sponsor presentation, an opportunity to hear about the businesses of all attendees, and a whole lot of fun. We frequently hear from attendees that these meeting are chock full of value and a great way to build new relationships to help support their businesses. The Pensacola meetings include lunch paid for by our sponsors.

–            Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast Magazine. We are in our third year of production of the magazine and our goal is for this to be a quarterly publication. For 2017, we will only produce one edition. Each edition features interviewees of local successful leaders in business who share their honest thoughts on leadership, success, obstacles, and inspiration as it relates to women in business. We also include other articles on leadership, networking, and other skill development. It is geared for anyone in business or looking for business motivation and tips.

–            Annual Pursue Your Passion Women’s conference. To help celebrate National Business Women’s Week, we hold a full day conference during the third week of October along with several other events leading up to the conference. We feature a national keynote speaker, several local successful leaders in business, along with Speed Networking, an Experience Hall, structured and unstructured networking exercises and plenty of laughter, relationship building and excitement. Our attendees are not only motivated by the conference but they leave with tangible tips they can take back and implement in their businesses to lead them to success. For 2017, our conference will be held on Thursday, October 19th at Sanders Beach.

–            Power Up Challenge is a 12 week educational series where we hold classes once a week for two hours. Classes focused around four main areas of business: Networking, Marketing, Business Efficiency, and Sales Skills. Open to men and women and all classmates receive the full audio recording of each class along with class notes, expanded notes, and extra resources. Remote classes also available. Classes are affordable and attendees are elated with the amount and quality of the information that is shared.

–            Women in Leadership radio podcast show – sponsored by Pensacola Business Radio X. We hold monthly shows featuring local community leaders and other men and women in business. We engage our guests in conversational style in-depth interviews. They share their advice on topics such as mentoring, keys to success, time management tools, personal mantras and favorite inspirations, and what men can do to help support women in business.

–            Membership in Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast is also available.

Contact kolleen@powerfulwomengulfcoast.com for more information or visit our website at www.powerfulwomengulfcoast.com or Facebook at “Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast” for all of our meeting information.

Consulate General of Japan Liaison/Kumiko Sakurama Curtis

I come from a very diverse background with a lot of Japanese cultural history, religious doctrines, political beliefs, and social ideologies.  I was born in Nagasaki, Japan after the atomic bombing took place.  Both my parents are survivors of the WWII era.  My father served in the Japanese Army/POW returned to Nagasaki after the war.  Mom, age 23 at that time, is a direct survivor of the atomic bomb where she was able to shield herself from the blast and thermal radiation in the Nagasaki rugged terrain.  I am a cancer survivor from the indirect effects from the atomic fallout.

My families are of the Samurai blood line.  Mom’s grandfather family (lived in a Samurai Castle) was second in power during the Kumamoto Samurai period.   Father’s families were also Samurai (farmers in surrounding mountains) much like what was illustrated in the movie “The Last Samurai”. (Known as the Japan Civil War Era).

After High School I was trained as a tour guide for City of Nagasaki and the “Glover House & Gardens” which later known as the “Madama Butterfly House” after Puccini wrote what has become one of the best world acclaimed opera’s.   I even had to sing parts of this opera while giving these guided tours (Beautiful Day).

I married a U.S. Navy soldier and found myself in the United States where I earned my Accounting Degree from the University of West Florida (Graduated 1998).  I have used my degree both working for the Navy Exchange and Sacred Heart Hospital.  I have always given back my knowledge and caring nature through working and volunteering in community.   I have worked part time with the Japan Center at the University of West Florida (Over 15 years).  My volunteerism is numerous:  Sacred Heart Children’s Miracle Network, Japanese-American Society, Double Bridge Run, Blue Angel Run, Diabetes Walk, Pensacola Spring Fest, Sister City Hagiwara/Pensacola inter-cultural exchange interpreter, Board Japanese American Society of Northwest Florida and more.

In January 2012, I was asked to develop a PowerPoint presentation for the members/performers/families of the Pensacola Opera as a community diversity educational event for Japan Center at the University of West Florida.  The project was such a big success that others have asked to develop my presentation about “Madama Butterfly” story into a diversity training/educational program…..

March 2014, I was asked to serve as Liaison, for the Consulate-General Japan in Miami for the Pensacola/Northwest Florida region.

Powerful Women of the Gulf Coast – History and Benefits for 2017

Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. In that role, Kolleen was responsible for finding her own clients and quickly learned the value of networking, networking, and even more networking. It was in 2004 and during her sales career that she, along with two other professional business women met for lunch with the purpose of helping to motivate each other after Hurricane Ivan had blown through our area and changed not only the physical landscape of the area, but also impacted the business landscape as well.
