2022 Year in Review, with host Richard Grove (Organization Conversation, Episode 53)

He also discussed the impact of the pandemic on Wall Control, what the business has seen during 2022, projects coming in 2023, and much more.

Richard Grove, Wall Control

Richard Grove, Host, Organization Conversation

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

Outside of Richard’s work at Wall Control he enjoys helping other business owners, operators, and entrepreneurs along their own paths to success by offering personal business coaching and advising through his website ConsultantSmallBusiness.com. Richard has developed an expansive and unique skillset growing and scaling Wall Control through a multitude of challenges to the successful brand and company it is today. Richard is happy to share his knowledge and experience with others who are looking to do the same within their own businesses.

About Wall Control

The Wall Control story began in 1968 in a small tool & die shop just outside Atlanta, Georgia. The first of three generations began their work in building a family-based US manufacturer with little more than hard work and the American Dream.

Over the past 50+ years, this family business has continued to grow and expand from what was once a small tool & die shop into an award-winning US manufacturer of products ranging from automobile components to satellite panels and now, the best wall-mounted tool storage system available today, Wall Control.

The Wall Control brand launched in 2003 and is a family-owned and operated business that not only produces a high-quality American Made product but sees the entire design, production, and distribution process happen under their own roof in Tucker, Georgia. Under that same roof, three generations of American Manufacturing are still hard at work creating the best tool storage products available today.

Real Life Renovation

LIVE from HAVEN 2022: Alex, Real Life Renovation (Organization Conversation, Episode 51)

Alex of Real Life Renovation joined Richard Grove in the Wall Control booth at HAVEN Conference 2022. Alex talked about how he got into DIY, why he decided to begin sharing his projects, his perspective on being authentic, why he chose to make it a business, his experience at Haven, and more.

This show was originally broadcast live from the 2022 HAVEN Conference held at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.

Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Alex, Owner, Real Life Renovation

Alex, Owner, Real Life Renovation

Alex lives in Baltimore Maryland with his wife who was his high school sweetheart.

They bought a home in the summer of 2020 that is 150 years old and they have been doing the DIY thing it ever since.

Alex had zero intentions of becoming a paid influencer, but he felt like he had a different voice to share. He was incredibly frustrated with the DIY space from the outside looking in.

He felt like every creator was skipping over the real-life renovation part of it where they would use certain angles to make their picture perfect. They would skip the parts where they make mistakes and they just act like everything went perfectly in the renovations and in their projects.

Alex didn’t know how to use tools and didn’t have any experience with construction, but when they bought their house it needed a lot of work.

Alex decided he was ready to learn, so he started working on projects little by little and now likes to show the entire process, including mistakes, to keep it real and inspire others who are also new at DIY.

DIYers Trent and Jen Fancher own Noting Grace and offer tutorials for their projects. At their third HAVEN Conference, they sat down with host Richard Grove to talk about all their businesses. They discussed how they got into the DIY space, how they manage their time, how to stay organized, how to get inspired through the DIY community, and much more.

This show was originally broadcast live from the 2022 HAVEN Conference held at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.

Trent and Jen Fancher, Owners, Noting Grace

Trent and Jen Fancher, Owners, Noting Grace

Trent and Jen are self-taught DIYers taking on each renovation project one room at a time. The phrase “Broke Musicians in Love” is what drives them to do what they do with the eye on the prize, which not only is a beautiful room, but also a gorgeous budget to go with it!

Through this learning process, they share the tips they find with you. They know that having the home of your dreams isn’t a reality for most, but you can create a home you love with a little bit of ingenuity.

When they share room reveals, or images of their home with you, know that the picture isn’t perfect.

Many hours, mess-ups, and redos were done to get create that look. If you could look behind the lens, you would see all the papers, shoes, and junk pushed aside to get that shot.

One question they often get asked is “How do you keep your house so clean all the time with 2 boys?” Well, they don’t!

That’s why they love finding items that are less than perfect– items with character. Life is meant to be enjoyed despite this constant goal, Jen battles to reach perfection.  They hope to provide you with all the tools to help you create a home with intention that you love to live in while giving you grace when it’s not perfect.

Not only do they hope to inspire you, but Jen and Trent want to connect with you. They are honored to read each and every comment you leave. You can always find behind the scenes shenanigans over on Instagram or you can sign up for their emails so you don’t miss a post.

There is “Beauty in the Blemishes” and they hope to help you find it!

Anotha DIY Project offers accent wall design, and residential and commercial design projects. Design packages include transforming your space after consulting with you.

Jamilla began Anotha DIY Project to showcase some of her projects and it has taken off.

When Anothadiyproject started a year ago, it was only meant to be a DIY page on Instagram that gave Jamilla a platform to dance and share her love for home projects, decor, and good music. Jamilla has always been fascinated with interior design and home projects, but she never thought it would become a career.

Jamilla says God has guided her every step of the way and there is no way to tell her story without highlighting that. So now Jamilla shows up, makes things pretty with power tools, smiles and dances.

LIVE from HAVEN 2022: Greg Freuler, FreeForm Brush (Organization Conversation, Episode 46)

Greg Freuler, Founder and President of FreeForm Brush, joined host Richard Grove live from HAVEN Conference 2022. Greg discussed the development of the FreeForm Brush, how he grows his business, recent supply chain issues, the next exciting product coming, and much more.

Greg Freuler, Founder and President, FreeForm Brush

Greg Freuler, Founder and President, FreeForm Brush

FreeForm Founder and President Greg Freuler, an industrial designer, discovered the one job he dreaded most was painting. The centuries-old paintbrush design caused his hand to cramp and eventually led to carpal tunnel syndrome. He set out on a mission to redefine the paintbrush.

Two-and-a-half years and nearly 100 prototypes later, the patented Grip-Free Paintbrush was born.

Why Use a Grip-Free Paintbrush?

Holding a conventional paintbrush with a pinch grip causes a chain reaction of tensing muscles all the way from your fingers to your neck. It’s like driving your car with the emergency brake for hours. With a Grip-Free Paintbrush, your fingers are relaxed, allowing the arm and shoulder to relax. This means a steadier hand for superior control and greatly reduced fatigue.

With a Grip-Free Paintbrush, as you apply more pressure to the work surface with the bristles, it locks tighter to your hand, requiring virtually no grip pressure. The brush is elevated, providing visibility to the work surface without compensation and without pain.

LIVE from HAVEN 2022: Kristin Browne, TotalBoat (Organization Conversation, Episode 44)

A fellow exhibitor and colleague, Kristin Browne from TotalBoat was in the Wall Control booth at HAVEN 2022 chatting with Stephanie of Uncommon Outpost and Richard Grove. They discussed the parallels between their products that appeal to a variety of users and makers. Kristin talked about how makers use their epoxy products, serving customers with expert customer and technical support, how their business has evolved to serve makers, and much more.

This show was originally broadcast live from the 2022 HAVEN Conference held at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.

Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

TotalBoat

Since 2012, TotalBoat has been making the highest quality marine-grade products money can buy. What started out as a handful of durable repair products for hands-on DIY boaters has grown to include a range of expert solutions for makers of all kinds, from seascape artists to inland woodworkers. It’s been an evolution and education. One they wouldn’t trade for the world.

As boaters and DIYers, they understand you need projects to go smoothly. That’s why they are constantly finding ways to make TotalBoat’s original products better, easier to use, more sustainable, and less expensive. They even tinker with packaging from time to time to make it more user-friendly. Their real-world know-how is what separates them from the giant chemical conglomerates and sets their stuff apart.

Part of what they do is to craft, test, and refine to guarantee the durability, quality, and safety of everything they make. Once that’s been done, they then sell directly to consumers so they can deliver great value. The fact that TotalBoat’s homegrown products have won multiple awards and outperformed the competition several times over is proof that what they’re doing is working.

TotalBoat’s success is due entirely to its customers. As the ones getting their hands dirty using TotalBoat products, they’re best equipped to convey what problems they need solving and what needs to be improved. Their feedback is instrumental to the R&D process. In fact, some of the greatest innovations have come directly from listening to user suggestions, so thanks for the feedback. Please keep it coming.

About Richard Grove

LIVE from HAVEN 2022: Brooke, Cribbs Style (Organization Conversation, Episode 37)

Brooke, DIY and Lifestyle blogger with Cribbs Style, joined host Richard Grove at HAVEN 2022 for her tenth year. She shared her journey from being an organizer to becoming a blogger. She and Richard also talked about the advantages of being at HAVEN, the difference it has made to her process by having a Wall Control system, and more.

This show was originally broadcast live from the 2022 HAVEN Conference held at the Grand Hyatt Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.

Organization Conversation is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Brooke, Cribbs Style

Brooke, Cribbs Style

Born and raised in Ohio, Brooke grew up an only child which meant she had to be super creative with how she spent her time.  Most of her childhood, she was lucky enough to live next door to her grandparents, who exposed her to the world of crafting and woodworking. Her parents took a lot of pride in making their house a home, which is where Brooke learned her love of organizing and keeping things tidy.  She took the skills she learned to college, and took great pride in crafting and making her home away from home hers with simple projects.

It was in college that she met her husband who, thankfully, also shares her love of creating and doing projects. Even before they married, they loved going through open houses, parades of homes, home shows, you name it, looking at design and decor ideas.

From their very first home to the home they live in now, they have gained experience, and courage, with every home project they complete.

Brooke’s goal has always been to help other people realize that anything is possible. That the world of organization and DIY doesn’t have to be intimidating and is completely doable.
