Richard Grove, Wall Control

Richard Grove, COO, Wall Control, Small Business Consultant, and Host of Organization Conversation

Richard Grove‘s background is in engineering but what he enjoys most is brand building through relationships and creative marketing. Richard began his career with the Department of Defense as an engineer on the C-5 Galaxy Engineering Team based out of Warner Robins. While Richard found this experience both rewarding and fulfilling, he always knew deep down that he wanted to return to the small family business that originally triggered his interest in engineering.

Richard came to work for the family business, Dekalb Tool & Die, in 2008 as a Mechanical Engineer. At the time, Wall Control was little more than a small ‘side hustle’ for Dekalb Tool & Die to try to produce some incremental income. There were no “Wall Control” employees, just a small warehouse with a single tool and die maker that would double as an “order fulfillment associate” on the occasion that the original WallControl.com website, which Richard’s grandmother built, pulled in an order.

In 2008, it became apparent that for the family business to survive they were going to have to produce their own branded product at scale to ensure jobs remained in-house and for the business to continue to move forward. Richard then turned his attention from tool and die to Wall Control to attempt this necessary pivot and his story with Wall Control began. Since that time, Richard has led Wall Control to significant growth while navigating two recessions.

Outside of Richard’s work at Wall Control he enjoys helping other business owners, operators, and entrepreneurs along their own paths to success by offering personal business coaching and advising through his website ConsultantSmallBusiness.com. Richard has developed an expansive and unique skillset growing and scaling Wall Control through a multitude of challenges to the successful brand and company it is today. Richard is happy to share his knowledge and experience with others who are looking to do the same within their own businesses.

About Wall Control

The Wall Control story began in 1968 in a small tool & die shop just outside Atlanta, Georgia. The first of three generations began their work in building a family-based US manufacturer with little more than hard work and the American Dream.

Over the past 50+ years, this family business has continued to grow and expand from what was once a small tool & die shop into an award-winning US manufacturer of products ranging from automobile components to satellite panels and now, the best wall-mounted tool storage system available today, Wall Control.

The Wall Control brand launched in 2003 and is a family-owned and operated business that not only produces a high-quality American Made product but sees the entire design, production, and distribution process happen under their own roof in Tucker, Georgia. Under that same roof, three generations of American Manufacturing are still hard at work creating the best tool storage products available today.

Janet Hagerman, Fractional Chief Hygiene Officer

Managing DSO Hygiene for Patient Care, Profitability, and Scalability, with Janet Hagerman, Fractional Chief Hygiene Officer (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 741)

On this episode of North Fulton Business Radio, host John Ray chats with Fractional Chief Hygiene Officer Janet Hagerman, who consults with Dental Service Organizations (DSOs). Janet discusses her role and explains the significance of effective hygiene departments for DSOs. She touches on the challenges DSOs face due to a lack of structures, high turnover, and low case acceptance rates. She emphasizes the role communication plays in addressing these issues, and the necessity of having congruent company and department visions. The episode concludes with Janet sharing her success stories and the sweet spots in her client base.

Janet Hagerman, Fractional Chief Hygiene Officer

Fractional Chief Hygiene Officer Janet Hagerman trains emerging DSOs to develop a profitable hygiene department positioned for same-store growth and acquisition scalability with consistent and profitable patient-centered systems. As badly as emerging DSOs need a game plan for growth, it’s often just not in the budget. As a fractional CHO, Janet utilizes her past DSO experience to teach DSOs how to create a hygiene department that is profitable, consistent, and scalable.

Janet is an international speaker, author, and consultant. A Medical College of Georgia graduate, Janet’s experience includes over 30 years of clinical and coaching experience with both solo and small to large group practices, and leadership as a corporate Director of Dental Hygiene, managing 100+ practices.

As a DSO Director of Hygiene, Janet created the hygiene department from the ground up, organizing best-in-class teams, creating scalable systems and profitable protocols, and cultivating a culture of enthusiastic, loyal support. She learned (sometimes the hard way) how to integrate the foundational hygiene department building blocks with the overall operational company structure. She introduced the clinical advisory board, which fosters dentist-hygienist collaboration. She learned and implemented strategies to increase patient treatment case acceptance, thus increasing production and revenue. Ultimately, she figured out how to create the foundational building blocks to produce a highly functioning DSO hygiene department, and now helps emerging DSOs do the same.

Maedeh Samimi, owner of Urban Skin Care Clinic in Roswell, joined host John Ray on this episode of North Fulton Business Radio. Maedeh discussed the importance of understanding skin, both in managing challenges like adult cystic acne and aging gracefully, highlighting the holistic approach that makes Urban Skin Care Clinic stand out. She shared how her personal experience with cystic acne fueled her passion for skincare and how her treatments aim to boost confidence and self-image in addition to improving skin health. Maedeh also covered the importance of daily skincare routines, including the use of sunscreen, why regular exfoliation is so crucial, and much more.

Maedeh Samimi, Urban Skin Care Clinic

Maedeh Samimi is a licensed aesthetician in Roswell, Georgia.

Maedeh started her career path as a makeup artist and enjoyed helping and uplifting women and their self-image. In her early 20s, she experienced adult cystic acne and quickly learned that masking her breakouts with makeup wasn’t improving her skin condition but further clogging her pores. Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 60 million Americans and their self-esteem annually.

Inspired to help others after her own journey with acne, Maedeh founded Urban Skin Care Clinic in February of 2020 in Roswell. From the early days of her aesthetic career, Maedeh knew she wanted to focus on the clinical side of the industry, and from working in medical spa settings, she gained vast knowledge and over 10,000 hours of hands-on experience in clinical skin treatments and procedures.

Maedeh continuously furthers her education and stays current with industry news and innovations. She is passionate about helping and guiding other women to feel confident in their own skin and leaving makeup to be an option rather than a security blanket by clearing their acne, removing sun-damaged spots, and rejuvenating tired, dull complexions.

Maedeh is the host of The Skin Coach in Georgia podcast.

Business Success, Networking, and Giving Back, with Mark McKenzie, Docqmax Digital Printing (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 738)

This episode of North Fulton Business Radio features Mark McKenzie of Docqmax Digital Printing, who joined host John Ray to share his experiences as a business owner and the significant lessons he’s gained over the course of his career. Mark discussed the history of Docqmax, their remarkable record as a second-generation family business, and how he and his brothers have navigated the twists and turns in the printing industry. Mark shared his views about the importance of networking and creating valuable relationships for business growth. He also discussed the importance of giving back, touching on his longtime involvement with the Golf for the Kids Invitational, an annual golf tournament that raises funds for Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and supports children battling cancer. Additionally, Mark imparted insights on how investing in real estate became one of Docqmax’s best business moves, the importance of support from outside professional advisors, and much more.

North Fulton Business Radio is hosted by John Ray and broadcast and produced from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

Docqmax Digital Printing

Docqmax Digital Printing and the McKenzie Brothers have been providing their experience and expertise in marketing, printing, and copying to Metro Atlanta area businesses since 1975, and you’ll find that they’re enthusiastic about what they do.

They started out as a Quik Print Printing Franchisee in the heart of Buckhead and established locations in Downtown and Midtown Atlanta, as well as the Cobb Galleria Area. During this time, Rich, Mark, and Mike became second-generation owners and led the company to become one of the top Quik Print franchisees in the nation. After more than 22 years of being a consistent sales leader and producer in the Quik Print franchise system, they became an independent printing company, and Docqmax Digital Printing was launched.

They later consolidated their strengths under one roof in Atlanta’s West Midtown district in 2004. In their current location, they have been able to capitalize on technologies, processes, efficiencies, longtime experienced staff and partners, all of which help them meet their client’s demands, which allows them to drive revenue and sleep at night.

They do all this by offering an online, print-on-demand web portal, strategic marketing services, traditional full-color offset printing, various digital printing services such as digital color printing, black-and-white digital printing, high-speed duplicating, large-format color printing, banners, posters, variable-date printing, and direct mail, as well as a complete bindery and finishing department.

Docqmax Digital Printing is a unique and special place. As a second-generation family-owned business, the McKenzie brothers feel privileged to be the owners of this company. They are 100% locally owned and operated and are proud of the fact that over 85% of all the labor, supplies, raw materials, and resources they use to create and manufacture printing are purchased from other locally owned companies that support our local economy.

The mission of Docqmax Digital Printing is to provide the best printing and most helpful service in our community.

How do they do that? First, while they are in the business of printing, they believe that their company produces something much larger than ink and toner on paper. They print your ideas, hopes, and dreams. They take pride in the fact that the documents they create help tell your story and make your business more successful. Finally, they make every effort to be successful, but recognize that they can only accomplish this if they can help you be successful.

Understanding The Importance of Regular Business Valuations, with David Hern, Sofer Advisors (North Fulton Business Radio, Episode 736)

On this episode of North Fulton Business Radio, host John Ray talked with David Hern, CEO at Sofer Advisors. David highlighted the importance of regular business valuations and shared why it’s a key metric that businesses should track. He also talked about how valuations are tied to both tangible and intangible assets, as well as the significant role valuations play in strategic decision-making. David shared anecdotes from his career and explained how company valuations help in disputes or potential mergers. He also discussed how his firm helps businesses understand and evaluate their own worth.

North Fulton Business Radio is broadcast from the North Fulton studio of Business RadioX® inside Renasant Bank in Alpharetta.

David Hern, CEO, Sofer Advisors

David Hern is the founder and chief executive officer of Sofer® Advisors, LLC, focusing on business advisory services related to litigation assistance, estate and tax planning, and business enterprise valuations for various privately held and public companies.

He is a qualified financial analyst with a proven ability to simply and clearly communicate analysis to boards of directors, presidents and CEOs, CFOs, controllers, and private equity portfolio managers.

Mr. Hern has been recognized for enabling organizations to determine their enterprise and equity value for a variety of situations, including strategic planning, sale or IPO, mergers and acquisitions, financial reporting (common stock, stock option grants, purchase price allocations, impairment analyses, etc.), and tax compliance (estate & gift, 409A, NUBIG). Industry experience includes, but is not limited to, professional services, business services, healthcare, information technology, financial services, and manufacturing and distribution.

Sofer Advisors

Sofer® Advisors was created in 2019, but their experience with valuation goes back over a decade. Their CEO, David Hern, has worked in the business valuation field at both boutique advisory firms and large international financial services companies.

While at these firms, David recognized the need for a boutique financial advisory firm in the Atlanta area to serve the business valuation needs of small- and medium-sized businesses.

These businesses have unique needs that require an advisor who can both empathize and have the agility to deliver prompt insights. Sofer® Advisors was formed to fill this void while providing high-quality business valuations to the lower and middle markets.

Since its inception, Sofer® Advisors has quickly added associates to help with the growing business. The firm specializes in providing a neutral third-party valuation of closely held businesses. The valuation and its insights will give the business owner the confidence they need when contemplating a material but uncertain financial decision.

After determining a company’s value, they communicate that information to the relevant stakeholders, including company management, the board of directors, shareholders, and financial or legal advisors.

This process involves more than just providing accurate numerical valuations. They put numbers into proper perspective, giving you key insights when making critical business decisions.

Their “Heart of a Teacher” approach is designed to help you understand the data we provide and how to use these insights to immediately benefit your organization.

Valuation services are applicable in many situations where business value may be uncertain and critical. These situations include litigation assistance, estate and gift tax planning, financial and tax reporting, and other contexts for public and private companies.

On this episode of North Fulton Business Radio, host John Ray spoke with Joe Summerour and Eric Williams, both of whom work for Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe in the Metro Atlanta region. They reflected on the company’s 25-year history, its growth from its inception after founders Keith and Amy Richards returned from an inspiring trip to Greece, up to its current 114 locations nationwide, and plans for further expansion. Joe Summerour is the Atlanta Area Manager of Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe, and Eric Williams handles Atlanta-area marketing for the company.

Keith and Amy Richards founded Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1998. After a trip to Greece a year earlier, Keith put his culinary skills to work, recreating some of the cuisine and experiences from the region. With a menu patterned after dishes traditionally served in Greek homes, Keith and Amy grew their dream restaurant from one to three locations and then began franchising in 2013 after partnering with Fresh Hospitality. Now at almost 100 units, Taziki’s continues to grow while serving many of the same dishes curated by Keith and Amy’s initial trip to Greece.

From hand-cut meats served with signature sauces to healthy salads filled with fresh fruits and veggies, Taziki’s Mediterranean Cafe has mastered the art of creating Mediterranean-inspired dishes that are destined to become your next familiar favorite. At each location, dine-in, carry-out, and catering are available. Please check out their locations and menus here.
