Lee Ellis, Colonel USAF (Ret), Leading with Honor®

Lee Ellis is Founder and President of Leading with Honor® and FreedomStar Media®. He is an award-winning author, leadership coach, and expert speaker in the areas of leadership, team building, and human performance. His past clients include Fortune 500 senior executives and C-level leaders in telecommunications, healthcare, the military, and other business sectors. Early in his career, Lee served as an Air Force fighter pilot, flying fifty-three combat missions over North Vietnam. In 1967, he was shot down and held as a POW for more than five years in Hanoi and surrounding camps. For his wartime service, he was awarded two Silver Stars, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star with Valor device, the Purple Heart, and the POW Medal. Lee resumed his Air Force career, serving in leadership roles with increasing responsibilities, including command of a flying squadron and leadership development organizations, before retiring as a colonel.

Lee has a BA in History and an MS in Counseling and Human Development. He is a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the Air War College. He has authored or co-authored seven books on leadership and career development. His latest bestselling book is entitled Captured by Love: Inspiring True Romance Stories from Vietnam POWs. Two additional, award-winning books share leadership insights gained from his POW experience. Leading with Honor: Leadership Lessons from the Hanoi Hilton won book-of-the-year awards and was selected in 2013 for the USAF Chief of Staff Professional Reading List. His follow-on book, Engage with Honor: Building a Culture of Courageous Accountability, was selected as best in class for the “Leadership” category.

In 2014, Lee was inducted into the Georgia Military Veterans Hall of Fame, and in 2015, he was a DAR Medal of Honor recipient for a lifetime of patriotic service as a military officer and spokesman for leading with honor.

Dr. Joe Pennino is a seasoned public safety leader, educator, consultant, and leadership coach with over two decades of experience in fire service, emergency management, and public administration. Since 2021, he has served as the Fire Chief and Emergency Manager for the City of Roswell, GA, leading a department of more than 150 personnel and managing a $17 million budget to enhance public safety and community resilience.

Under Dr. Pennino’s leadership, the Roswell Fire Department was recently honored with the 2025 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award for its groundbreaking research on the effects of shift schedules and adjusted start times on firefighter performance and well-being. This study, conducted in collaboration with researchers, aims to improve firefighter health by addressing sleep quality, reducing fatigue, and enhancing long-term wellness. The award, presented at the 35th Annual National Fire and Emergency Services Dinner in Washington, DC, recognizes departments that make significant contributions to firefighter safety and health.

Prior to his tenure in Roswell, Dr. Pennino was Deputy Fire Chief in Largo, Florida, where he oversaw the department’s five operational divisions and played a pivotal role in modernizing emergency medical services, data-driven decision-making, and intergovernmental coordination. His diverse career includes experience as a hazmat technician, SWAT medic, flight medic, and emergency management coordinator, providing him with a broad perspective on crisis response and strategic leadership.

Roswell Fire Department, Roswell, Georgia

The Roswell Fire Department, located in Roswell, Georgia, is a progressive, ISO Class 2 all-hazards agency dedicated to providing comprehensive public safety services. The department operates out of seven fire stations, a separate fire headquarters, and the Roswell-Alpharetta Public Safety Training Center (RAPSTC). The department’s apparatus includes seven fire engines, two ladder trucks, a heavy/technical rescue truck, two rescue ambulances, and one Battalion Chief/Incident Command vehicle, all of which are Advanced Life Support (ALS) capable and staffed with paramedics.

The Roswell Fire Department offers a wide range of services, including fire suppression, emergency medical services (EMS), technical rescue, and public education. The technical rescue services encompass swift water rescue, motor vehicle and machinery rescue, rope rescue, trench rescue, collapse rescue, confined space rescue, and hazardous materials response. The department’s commitment to excellence is reflected in its ISO Class 2 rating, which places it among only 84 departments in Georgia and 2,200 departments nationwide with an ISO rating of 2 or better. This rating indicates that the department provides excellent fire protection services to the community.

The department has received several notable awards and recognitions for its outstanding performance. Recently, it was selected to receive the Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Service Safety Leadership Award for its collaborative study on the effects of shift schedules and start times on firefighter health and performance. Additionally, two members of the department were honored with Life Saving Valor Awards by Governor Brian Kemp during Firefighter Recognition Day in 2024. Darlene Drew is a public servant. She’s a Leadership Trainer and the CEO/Owner of Leadership Conditioning, Personal & Professional Development, LLC. She’s a Certified Leadership Trainer, Professional Speaker and Executive Coach with the John Maxwell Team. Darlene helps businesses, companies and organizations by helping leaders develop leaders. She has made a tremendous impact on the lives of many people. “How great it is to greet each day doing what you love to do equipping people with training that helps them grow,” she says. Over the course of my journey in leadership, it’s allowed me to train thousands of people. Training is my purpose, passion and a priority in my life. My early learnings about leadership was taught in my home from my dad and my large, loving, imperfect family of eleven children. Such family dynamics brought leadership lessons that would equip me for a lifetime.”

Darlene has been a public servant through employment in law enforcement which began as a Correctional Officer where she was initially told, “You’ll never make it!” Having decided to “make it,” she continued this career path with a focus on making the field better for staff and inmates. Throughout it, she was asked interesting questions, some of which were: “Why are you here? What should we call you? Why do you do it?” These were all learning and teachable moments from Darlene’s perspective to do what she loves: learn, teach and train. She placed her focus on effecting change, mentoring and developing staff and inmates.

In August 2019, Darlene was one of ten winners of 2019 Stage Time at the International Maxwell Certification Conference. In the public sector, she earned the distinction of Senior Executive Service. Darlene served as Warden of three Federal prisons. She’s the first and only female to serve as Warden at the United States Penitentiary, Atlanta. Darlene served as Adjunct Professor at Lewis University, in Romeoville, Illinois. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Peachtree City and serves on the Board of Georgia Laws of Life.

Darlene earned her Bachelors Degree from Illinois State University and Masters Degree from Governor State University. She was awarded a Certificate of Completion for the Women and Power Program, Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government, Executive Education. She is a Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education alumni (HKS EE alumni). Darlene is the recipient of the prestigious Attorney General Award and Susan M. Hunter Award from the Association of Women Executives in Corrections.

Darlene’s passion is “building up people,” through teaching, training and speaking. Her guiding life and leadership principle is, “Don’t teach what you don’t know, Don’t lead where you won’t go and Don’t ask for what you won’t give.” Lead Well!

Chase Carey spent 20 years in Corporate America’s Health Insurance and Consulting industry, in significant positions. In 1998, as a VP of Underwriting for Aetna, Inc., he contacted the Chief Medical Officer telling him of the benefits of Meditation and other Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) techniques. He offered to help the company become a major force in bringing these techniques to the health insurance industry and the people it took care of. He received a courteous reply admitting it all made sense but that he was simply “too far ahead of them.” 17 years later Aetna is teaching its employees to Meditate.

In the 1990’s his Meditation work began at The Monroe Institute in Virginia. He participated in 6 week-long programs, which are 24/7 immersions into deep Meditative states and guided exploration within them. The training enabled him to re-enter any number of Meditative states, near instantaneously, at will, anywhere, anytime, including at work while solving complex problems as a career insurance executive. He can teach you to do this too.

Supported Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) Organizational Effectiveness Assessment & Business Process recommendations to achieve greater visibility, interaction, and support between and across GTRI and the main Georgia Tech campus community.

Project Director providing Women Veterans Employment Research support to DOL Womens Bureau addressing the gaps in research and employment policy.

Managed the design, implementation and deployment of Efforts to Outcomes (ETO) pilot for the East Lake Foundation; implemented the Outcomes Measurement pilot project to collect, analyze and report data on the effectiveness of the ELF programs and its East Lake partners.

CDC Office of Strategy, Health Results Measurement Framework: identified opportunities to maximize the health impact of CDCs resource management decisions (both internal and external to the enterprise).

Community

Vonetta Daniels is an AmeriCorps National Service Alumna and received her first Presidential Service Award for her fellowship as the Program Manager for the Citizen Action AmeriCorps Program partnering Community Development Organizations and Neighborhood Planning Units (NPUs) to implement civic engagement, community development and capacity building projects to address identified in five Atlanta neighborhoods.

She served as the Service Chair for the Emory Alumni Association Leadership board from 2004 to 2007 and helped to expand Emory Cares to an International Day of Community Service. In 2008, Emory Cares International Service Day was recognized for its valuable contributions to Emory University’s 2008 Presidential Award for General Community Service. Vonetta currently serves on the Board of Directors for the HouseProud Atlanta and KIPP South Fulton Academy (KFSA).
