Read Better Be Better is an after school literacy program designed to be highly effective and evidence informed. Their mission is to help children improve literacy skills to become better learners.

They create change by helping children master reading comprehension in three ways:

Improving concentration
Encouraging an active enjoyment of reading
Helping develop a deeper understanding of what is being read

They support basic classroom instruction with additional comprehension strategies to improve proficiency and positively impact future academic success.

RBBB uses trained 8th grade volunteers to implement a simple, but highly structured after-school program for 3rd graders. The older students work one-on- one with the younger students, modeling and fostering active engagement with a variety of texts. The program also includes constructive play activities specifically chosen for their ability to focus attention and improve concentration.

Sophie Etchart was born in Connecticut, but raised and educated in England. She studied Spanish, French and German at the University of Newcastle-Upon- Tyne. As part of her degree, Sophie spent her third year of University living and working in Belgium and Spain.

Upon graduation, Sophie joined a financial services agency specializing in board-level strategic HR consulting. In 2009 Sophie designed and executed the Private Equity Foundation / Deutsche Bank Leadership Program: a series of instructional workshops and networking events in partnership with INSEAD business school, France. After spending a year on loan to the Private Equity Foundation as a strategic HR consultant, Sophie committed to a full transition into the non-profit sector.

Sophie moved to Peru in 2010 to run the education program at SKIP, an international development organization in northern Peru. For 2 years she managed a team of 25 staff and volunteers working with 330 young people aged 3-17. The key component of the program was a comprehension curriculum designed to complement the national public schooling system. This program received a commendation during a site visit by professional contacts at the Bill Gates foundation.

Sophie met her husband, an Arizona native, in Peru and moved to Phoenix in 2012. She spent 2 years managing the JA BizTown® team at Junior Achievement. Upon her departure, each member of her team had delivered “outstanding” performance according to standardized quantitative KPI assessments.

Sophie had identified the need for basic reading comprehension support during her 2 years at Junior Achievement. The JA BizTown® program serves over 20,000 students per year; an alarming number of whom had neither the focus nor the foundational skills to obtain the most value from the experience. When the “Move On When Reading” law was announced, she decided that the timing was critical to support those 3rd graders at risk of being kept behind. Read Better Be Better is based on the proven SKIP model and adapted to the current environment.

In 2017, Sophie was recognized as one of Phoenix Business Journal’s 40 Under 40 younger business leaders making an impact in the Phoenix area.

A true local, Mrs. Bowden was raised on Pensacola Beach with her mother, step father, younger sister and younger brother. She attended Pensacola Beach Elementary School and Gulf Breeze Middle School and High School. She attended Pensacola Junior College, now Pensacola State College, full time her senior year of high school as part of the dual enrollment program. After graduating from high school, she attended Florida State University on an academic scholarship. While attending FSU, she was employed and was on the Level Co. Dance Team. She graduated with a Bachelors degree in Mass Communications and a minor in English. She attended law school at Barry University School of Law in Orlando. While attending Barry, she received her honors certificate in children and family law. After graduating law school, she took the Florida Bar Exam and became licensed to practice law in Florida. She then began her first position as a practicing attorney at the Office of the Public Defender in Escambia County. As a Public Defender, Mrs. Bowden practiced criminal defense, where she represented over 2000 defendants. She gained great experience in and out of Court, handling misdemeanor and felony cases. After three years as an attorney at the Office of the Public Defender, she began her career in private practice at a small, local firm. There, she practiced Family Law, Criminal Defense, Personal Injury and Wills, before deciding to open her own firm, Lacie Bowden Law.

Mrs. Bowden lives in Pensacola with her husband and their four pets. She still enjoys many of the same activities that she grew up doing, including lounging on the beach, surfing, paddle boarding, boating, fishing and strolling the beach on her bike. She loves spending time with family and friends, who are all a huge part of her life. She also enjoys dancing, photography and traveling.

From the time Mrs. Bowden was in elementary school, she always had an interest in becoming an attorney. Kolleen Edwards Chesley has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and spent the majority of her career as a financial advisor. 5^th Annual Foo Foo Festival Arrives in Pensacola, Florida November 1-12

The “Festival City of the South” Offers 12-Day Arts & Culture Celebration

Pensacola, Fla. – When the modern performance arts have the backdrop of America’s oldest settlement, one of the South’s most charming coastal cities is magically transformed into a delightful, sensory feast. The nonprofit organization, Art, Culture, and Entertainment, Inc. (ACE), presents this sensory event when the 5^th Annual Foo Foo Festival occurs November 1-12, 2018 in Pensacola, Fla. The 12-day Foo Foo Fest celebrates culturally creative happenings, events and moments and invites visitors to “Vacation Artfully” in Pensacola for nearly two weeks.

Pensacola, known as the “Festival City of the South,” is the only city on the stretch of the Gulf Coast from Mobile, Ala. to Tampa, Fla. that boasts having the “big five,” an opera, ballet, symphony, theatre and museum. Foo Foo Festival’s roster of events celebrates art, music, dance, opera, theatre and cuisine with programming from 30 grant recipients, throughout the city of Pensacola for nearly two weeks. The 2018 ACE grant recipients will host individual experiences specific to their craft throughout the festival. Strategically positioned in and around some of Pensacola’s most popular and longer-running events, the Foo Foo Fest encourages cultural tourists to make Pensacola an arts destination and enjoy other events those two weeks including The Greater Gulf Coast Arts Festival, the Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show, Pensacola Eggfest, the 34th Annual Frank Brown Songwriters Festival and the 14th Annual Pensacola Marathon.

To mark the fifth anniversary of the Foo Foo Fest, this year’s 2018 event features a special, large-scale interactive picture mural created from thousands of images of festival-goers. This Foo Foo Festival Picture Mosaic allows visitors to become “part of the art,” actually leaving personal, creative marks on a permanent historical art collage in downtown Pensacola, thus further emphasizing the wider community’s interconnectivity.

“Pensacola, Fla. has established a stellar reputation for its unique, diverse cultural arts offerings,” said David Bear, trustee emeritus for Art, Culture, and Entertainment, Inc. “So, it’s only natural we bring not only a variety of opera, ballet, symphony, theatre and museum culture to visitors and residents, but so many other diverse offerings of high artistic, cultural caliber during the 5^th annual Foo Foo Fest.”

2018 Foo Foo Festival Highlights include:

CUBED Luminous: Outdoor Digital Arts Festival – a four day and night outdoor digital art festival consisting of a 12 foot by 18 foot LED cube and 16 laser projectors projecting on four eight foot by eight foot cubes located at UWF Historic Trust’s Museum Plaza in downtown Pensacola.

On Air with Doc Severinsen with the Pensacola Civic Band – The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson band leader and trumpeter, Doc Severinsen will perform a concert with the Pensacola Civic Band at the Pensacola Saenger Theatre. Doc will be joined by trumpeter Cathy Leach in a program featuring several selections from his musical repertoire of jazz and television tunes. In addition, the Pensacola Civic Band will perform many familiar television theme songs from the Fifties until today in a rollicking concert that you won’t want to miss.

First City Arts Center and Pensacola State College present Women of Fire – Women artists have faced gender bias throughout history and their work has often been undervalued, stereotyping to particular media, such as fiber arts. Women of Fire presents a collaborative event including a diverse group of six female artists including a blacksmith, glassblowers, ceramic artists and a flame worker.

See the Music, Hear the Dance – Pensacola Symphony Orchestra (PSO) and Ballet Pensacola will join forces for a performance combining breathtaking dance with live instrumental music. Featuring Ballet Pensacola’s dancers joined onstage by a septet of PSO musicians, See the Music, Hear the Dance includes landmark Impressionist works from renowned French composers, including Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro. Carrying the French tradition forward is Golden Fish Under the Arched Bridge by a living American composer, Michael Senturia.

The African American Heritage Society, Inc. – “STORYTELLER’S CIRCLE: The Gullah Experience with Aunt Pearlie Sue.” Unique to the coasts of South Carolina, Georgia and the Sea Islands around Pensacola, the Gullah people are a distinctive group of African Americans who live in small farming and fishing units. Pensacola LGBTQ Film Festival – Stamped is a film festival featuring awarding-winning New York City Broadway performers Nick Cearley and Lauren Molina. Better known as the Skivvies, the comedy-pop duo strips down not only their musical arrangements, but to their skivvies. They perform distinctive mashups and eccentric originals on cello, ukulele, guitar, and a surprising array of bizarre, under-used instruments in a part Weird Al-parody / part sexy burlesque.

Sunday’s Child, the UNITY project – an interactive, public, larger-than-life art structure celebrates our cultural uniqueness and strengthens our ties to each other. The project consists of posts, each with identifiers such as, “I’m a parent; I’m a Veteran; I speak English as a second language; I identify as LGBTQ.” Participants tie colorful ribbons to those posts that reflect their identities. Ribbons intertwine together to create a web of interconnectedness, visually showing the connectivity and diversity that builds a strong, vibrant community.

Truth for Youth, Inc. – Two events by Back On The Blocks include “Motown Madness Music Medley: an evening of sangin’, dancin’, and eatin’- THE SOULFUL WAY!” and “Street Beats, Bands & Bar-B-Que: an afternoon of steppin’, beatin’, and eatin’- THE SOULFUL WAY!”

In addition to the arts, downtown Pensacola offers historic walking tours, a large farmer’s market, quaint shops, food trucks, brewery tours and daily running clubs. Hosting the Foo Foo Festival in the fall offers big fun and a hefty dose of Southern sophistication delivered to boost tourism and travel during the “off season” with its unique slate of events.
