The CID is a special benefit district that works to increase property values, promote economic development and improve the overall quality of life in the southwest portion of Gwinnett County, including portions of Norcross and Peachtree Corners.

The Gateway85 Community Improvement District (CID) is the largest single CID in the state of Georgia. They are a public-private partnership funded by commercial property owners in the 14-square mile area spanning the I-85 corridor in southwest Gwinnett County. Formed in 2005, the formerly named Gwinnett Village CID represents more than 550 owners, accounting for more than $1 billion in commercial property value. Three thousand six hundred businesses employ almost 40,000 workers within the CID, making the district one of metro Atlanta’s most important employment centers.

Gateway85 is the threshold between the city of Atlanta and its largest suburban county, Gwinnett. They work to increase commercial property values in the district by promoting redevelopment and new business, investing in infrastructure improvements that enable safe travel by bike or on foot, enhancing public safety with sidewalks and crosswalks, and creating an attractive roadside landscape that makes traveling, living and working in our district a pleasure.

The Gwinnett Place Community Improvement District (CID) is a self-taxing district that uses additional property taxes to accelerate infrastructure improvements, security enhancements, and economic development initiatives. The CID is leading the effort to expedite mobility, quality of life, and economic improvement strategies for the benefit of businesses, employees and visitors to Gwinnett’s central business district. Through partnerships with Gwinnett County Government, the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce, the State of Georgia and others, the CID has a proven track record of improvements.

Judith Dennis/Roswell Urgent Care Center

Roswell Urgent Care Center is an urgent care clinic serving children, adults and seniors with common injuries and illnesses, or other medical requirements. They serve Roswell, Woodstock, East Cobb, Sandy Springs and the surrounding areas. They are committed to delivering quality patient care, convenient hours, prompt service and low costs to their patients. Their board certified physicians and physician assistants are fully prepared to handle your urgent and immediate care needs. They accept most major insurance plans and walk-ins are always welcome.

Philip Kouns/The Children’s Village at Christian City

Christian City is a non-denominational, non-profit organization with a mission to minister to the spiritual, physical, social and psychological needs of families, with particular emphasis on children, the aged and infirm, by providing residential, health and social services according to the principles and teachings of the Christian faith.

For more than 49 years The Children’s Village at Christian City has provided a quality Christ-centered, family-focused, community-based program of care for the many “children of need” coming to them.

The Children’s Village affords a safe and loving haven to children from circumstances that are disturbing to desperate. The reasons they come to them are varied, but each child needs the loving care of adults they can trust, and safety from abuse. Sometimes they lack even the very basics like food and shelter.

Their ministry provides children a stable environment where they learn structure, responsibilities, and live in productive, affirming and safe homes. They seek to meet the child’s needs through four distinct programs: The Children’s Village at Christian City residential program, Project Safe Place, the Transitional Living Program, and the developing ministry to young adults with cognitive challenges and developmental disabilities.

Tom Enser has seen a lot of ugly things in his career!  As the owner of a company that teaches safety training, he is often called on by friends and acquaintances when an emergency occurs.  Tom tells of one particular occasion where he was called over by a neighbor.  A person had fallen and was on the floor with an obvious head injury, with lots of blood on the floor.  Tom’s first question was, “Has anyone called 911?”  The answer, “No, we called you!”  Seems like common sense to call 911 first, doesn’t it?  In emergencies, common sense often takes a back seat to panic.

First Response Safety Training is committed to high quality, affordable training for both healthcare professionals and family caregivers that seeks to encourage the right response in an emergency as second nature.  Tom and his wife have owned First Response Safety Training for 13 years.  They offer certification courses in CPR, First Aid, AED, Fire Safety and Bloodborne Pathogens.  First Response Safety Training and Griswold Home Care will be partnering to offer CPR and First Aid classes in the Tucker area on a regular basis.  These classes will be open to both healthcare professionals and family caregivers!  To reach Tom, call him at (770) 945-6837, or visit their website here:  www.firstresponsecpr.com.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.

Cheerleading is getting more and more popular as a recognized sport. Now you can watch cheerleading competitions on ESPN and in the movies. This recognition has helped grow the sport but it has also increased the injury factor as well. As teams become more competitive they perform riskier and riskier routines in order to stand out in the judges eyes. Cheerleaders are getting injured regularly and the cheerleader in the flyer role is getting hurt the worst. Here are some things to look for in a good, safe cheer team

  1. Emergency plan – ask what the emergency safety plan is and how it would be implemented
  2. Medical exams – make sure they insist that each child gets a medical exam prior to joining team
  3. Qualified coaches – background checks on the coaches along with checking references from past employment is always a good idea
  4. Certification – National cheerleading certifications are also good guides to a reputable team

putting your car seat in safely is critical to keeping your child safe when you drive. The Fat Guy could never do this right so he went to the fire station and the nice firemen helped him. Here are some basic rules but each state has their own laws regarding child safety car seats.

  • Infants 0-1 years old and are under 20 pounds  should be in rear facing car seats in the back seat
  • Toddlers 1 and older who are over 20 pounds can be in forward facing car seats
  • Older kids then move to a booster seat up until they are 8 years old
  • Kids 8 and older will want to move to the front seat – but fight that urge. You want to avoid your kids controlling the radio as long as possible

In today’s Wellness Minute Dr Fitness and the Fat Guy share tips how make sure your leftovers are safe to eat. Never allow more than 2 hours to pass from cooking to storing in the freezer or the refrigerator. Toss all leftovers after 3-4 days. Throw away sauces and stuffing after 2 days. And you only get one reheat before you throw it away.  Listen right now to hear Dr Fitness’ tips.
