The mission of Senior Connections is to provide essential home and community-based care that maximizes independence. For over 40 years they have provided low-income seniors with the freedom to age with grace and dignity. They serve the entire 10 county region including the City of Atlanta.

Senior Connections operates four key programs: Meals on Wheels, In-Home Care, Emergency Home Repair and management of senior centers for DeKalb County. In 2009, to generate additional revenue to support their comprehensive no-fee services for low income seniors, they began Connections Catering. They provide corporate and individual catering, with the profits immediately reinvested into their programs.

Senior Connections incorporate volunteers wherever possible to reduce costs and maximize community investment.

GeorgiaCares is a private-public partnership, administered by the Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Division of Aging Services (DAS). GeorgiaCares is a volunteer-based program that provides free, unbiased and factual information and assistance to Medicare beneficiaries and their caregivers. GeorgiaCares is the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) and SMP (formerly Senior Medicare Patrol).

Local assistance is available for health insurance related issues including Medicare, Medicaid, financial assistance programs, health error, fraud and abuse and long term care insurance. The GeorgiaCares program is statewide. Services are provided through the twelve (12) Area Agencies on Aging (AAA). For information on your local AAA, call 1-866-552-4464 (option 4).

The Gwinnett Council for Seniors (GCS) encourages an active and informed senior citizen lifestyle for seniors in Gwinnett County. They serve as an active member in the senior community by developing and sharing information regarding activities occurring in a network of over 36 senior clubs and organizations countywide. As a 501(c) (3), the GCS encourages involvement on issues of interest to seniors by working towards improving the quality of life for essential services to the seniors of Gwinnett County. Their motto is, “Seniors Helping Seniors”.

Mission Statement of the Gwinnett Council for Seniors: The Gwinnett Council for Seniors shall be the representatives and serve as the ADVOCATE on the needs of all Gwinnett County Senior Citizens. This Council shall acquaint and keep the citizens and local government of Gwinnett County informed of the needs and concerns of all Senior Citizens and to encourage more involvement in the interest of the aging by working together with all concerned organizations and persons for a better understanding, quality of life and to seek financial support for essential services for all seniors of Gwinnett County.

Kay Coppage/Plymouth Harbor Adult Day Program

Plymouth Harbor Adult Day Program provides care and companionship for older adults who could benefit from socialization and supervision and offers respite for caregivers. The program seeks to further the goal of allowing older adults to remain in the home. Started in 1991, Plymouth Harbor is a ministry of Central Congregational United Church of Christ, staffed by dedicated social workers and a team of caring volunteers.

Plymouth Harbor offers a warm, loving and welcoming environment in which participants can form peer friendships while engaging in meaningful activities, enjoying entertainment by local musicians, and sharing a nutritious meal. Plymouth Harbor participants also benefit from occasional visits from the children at Turning Sun School and friendly pets. Plymouth Harbor is open to older adults who can benefit from a nurturing and safe environment outside the home, including those who may not wish or be able to stay alone for extended periods and who can benefit from social interaction and a structured environment. The program fee is $42.00 per day.

Gary Kitchen/Laona M. Kitchen Foundation

The Laona M.Kitchen Foundation is a 501 C 3 non-profit, all volunteer organization founded in 2012 to assist care givers by providing short-term respite care to relieve them of the demands of caring for one with Alzheimer’s/dementia. One of the other missions is to provide education to the community on how best to cope with these irreversible and deadly diseases, also assisting families in applying for the VA Aid and Attendance Pension.

The mother of Gary Kitchen, Laona Kitchen was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother who battled Alzheimer’s disease. The Laona M. Kitchen Foundation was founded in her honor.

Samantha Eaves is the Wellness Director for the active retirement community Campbell-Stone Apartment Homes in Sandy Springs, GA. Campbell-Stone retirement communities provide affordable, high-quality living in two of Atlanta’s most prestigious and convenient neighborhoods – Buckhead and Sandy Springs. Samantha is also on the Board of Directors for the Georgia Institute on Aging, which provides affordable, quality professional development for individuals working in the field of aging. She is serving as a co-chair for the Institute’s annual Profiles of Positive Aging Image Awards & Gala luncheon on September 24th.

Carol Garner is the daughter of Al and Gladys Wilson. The Wilsons were saluted on the show by host Victoria Collier for the love and care that contributed to them living positively in their later years.
