Life University and Solution Road

We continue our series with Dr. Gilles LaMarche of Life University, focusing on business leaders with integrity.  I had the pleasure of featuring my publicist, Sarah Smith, Founder of Solution Road, and her creative director, Teresa Roth.  Having gotten to know Sarah over the past year I can readily say she fits the theme of integrity in personal and professional life.

Her consultancy, Solution Road, brings clients expertise in branding and message, fund raising/development, a speakers bureau, advocacy, and more.  The company has worked with clients in biotechnology, health sciences, and the business sector, among others.

We talked about how important integrity is in branding and message, along with the importance of presenting useful information via social media platforms.  Peruse any marketing-related sites these days and it’s quickly clear that providing high-quality, engaging content that informs your customer with insights they can use is necessary to succeed in today’s digital world.

Woman Owned Business

On this week’s episode I continued my monthly series with NOWaccount.  CFO Archie Jones stopped by to talk about woman owned business.  He introduced us to two female entrepreneurs who are working on disrupting their respective industries.

KRG Oil Company is a family and female owned fuel and petroleum products business.  The company has positioned itself to serve the needs of small to mid-sized clients that require quantities of fuel and petroleum products that are below what larger fuel companies are willing or able to fulfill.  Marie described how she and her father, who had spent numerous years in the fuel business, decided to start their own company together after Marie was laid off from a previous job.

They determined their mission is to provide excellent customer service that goes above and beyond their competitors.  Marie shared how KRG’s corporate  philosophy is to treat all of their customers with professionalism and respect, no matter how big or small the client company.  KRG Oil was started because its founders felt that the fueling industry was missing good and old fashioned “customer service.”

We talked about how Marie and her team want the success of this business to be used as a platform to encourage others to “think outside of the box” and to give back to our community.

Kenzie Biggens explained how her earlier work in the social media arena opened the door to an unexpected opportunity to launch her virtual assistant business, Uniquely Virtual.  She explained how an executive she had been working with on social media services was retiring and suggested she start the business she had been contemplating for some time.

Kenzie got her business started and began to see a true niche and need for virtual assistants, particularly for executives who are serving in a contractor/consultant role.  Eventually, she designed an effective database and client management platform that has empowered her to allow her production partners to work remotely, helping to accelerate scaling and growing the company.

The Uniquely Virtual solution allows executives to gain access to professional assistant services while saving many of the employee expenses that come with employing workers.

My guests shared strategies they have used to help them get a toe hold in their markets and how they chose to distinguish themselves from their competitors, particularly with strict focus on customer service.

On this episode of “On the Money“, host Joe Moss of Embassy National Bank interviews Phillip Saxton of Small Business Samaritans about the role of social media in today’s sales efforts.

Phillip Saxton/Small Business Samaritans

Phillip Saxton, Small Business SamaritansSmall Business Samaritans cares about the individuals who have the dream and courage to start a business. These dreams are important, not just to them and their families, but to their customers and the community where they operate.

We are living in challenging economic times where much of the future of the United States depends upon job creation. Our top concerns as a nation lie with economic recovery, job creation, and setting up & operating successful businesses. It is highly doubtful that many new jobs are going to be created by big business, global business, governments, inventions or new investments. During the last 15 years, according to the Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses generated over 64% of new jobs. Currently, 70% of job growth is generated by small businesses, which is expected to continue, if not increase, in the next four years.

Small businesses have been severely affected by economic, global and political forces completely out of their control. The current recession was caused by poor political decisions, poor leadership from large financial organizations, a liquidity shortfall in the banking system caused by the overvaluation of assets, poor leadership from large corporations, and greed.

The concept of SBS was born out of the idea that small businesses and entrepreneurs needed to do things differently in order to insulate them from these economic and political forces. Our communities depend upon doing things differently. The goal is to operate a business that is less subjected to outside forces.

—————————————————————————————————————

“On the Money” focuses on topics and issues allowing small businesses to better navigate the financial services minefield, with analysis and opinions from today’s industry experts on banking and loans. “On the Money” also introduces you to some of the top small business leaders in the Atlanta market.

Bruce Kasanoff

This week I sat down with author and social media ghostwriter, Bruce Kasanoff.  I became familiar with Bruce through his frequent featured posts on LinkedIn Pulse.  It was through one of those posts I learned about his book, “How To Self-Promote Without Being a Jerk“.  We talked about how he got into ghostwriting for businesses looking to improve and expand their social media content, as well his two of his books.

Bruce shared how he had spent several years in marketing, becoming somewhat jaded with the process of the status quo of typical marketing methods.  He described how he had been a writer for the paper at Wharton School and how he enjoyed the process of creating well-written content.  We talked about how, as LinkedIn began to develop contributors for Pulse, their public published content platform, he decided to reach out and inquire if he could provide posts.  His inquiry was accepted and, over 300 posts later, he’s a regular feature on LinkedIn.

Bruce described how he was exposed to the concept of Service First while in business school and how that notion really resonated with him.  He enjoyed the opportunity to be able to write about how to incorporate the idea of being a “successful giver” into personal and professional interactions.  We talked about his book (which I really enjoyed) “How To Self-Promote Without Being a Jerk”, which explains how self-promotion is a natural (and necessary) activity we all engage in throughout our interpersonal interactions.

The caveat of doing self-promotion without being a jerk involves the concept of contemplating how you can help the individual(s) you are interacting with in a given moment before engaging in attempts to achieve your more self-serving goals such as “The Sale”.

We discussed his more recent publication, “Givers Deliver: Grow Your Career By Helping Others“.  Bruce talked about how it’s possible to consider the needs of others while at the same time addressing your own needs, resulting in win-win situations and interactions that ultimately end in greater success in your career.

Bruce’s writing style is very conversational and unpretentious and has elements of humor that keep the reader turning the pages.  It’s clear in speaking with him that he embraces the concepts of “How can I help this person?” and being a successful giver in his daily life.  I enjoyed the opportunity to talk to him about his writing and I look forward to digging into more of his works.  You will too!
