Jodi-Shaw-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioXLeslie Nilsen is a 20 year self employed Mortgage Broker. She has lived in Arizona since 1990.

In 2018 Leslie had a client moving from California who was adamant about purchasing a home in Arizona with a gourmet kitchen. When Leslie asked her why, she said she bakes birthday cakes for foster children in California. THAT was right up her alley.

Leslie knew then that she needed to find a way to do that in Arizona, and in March, 2019, she opened the Arizona Chapter of For Goodness Cakes.

Leslie has an amazing son, Dominic and a 2 year old English Setter/Border Collie named Oliver.

Leslie-Nilsen-on-Phoenix-Business-RadioX1Jodi Shaw is a volunteer baker for the Arizona Chapter of For Goodness Cakes.

To become a volunteer baker, you’ll have to attend an orientation – and you can find one near you here. Once you become a volunteer you’ll be emailed access to our Task Calendar which has all the baking opportunities on it.

This updates periodically as agencies submit their requests throughout the month. You can sign up for whichever cake you’re able to bake and deliver – rinse and repeat!

LogoNoMission

Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) is fulfilling the vision of its two co-founders, Barbara Norton and Lupe Esquer, two local Tempe residents who saw the great need experienced by their Tempe neighbors in 1966 and sought to make a difference by organizing their community into action. 52 years later, they are still furthering their vision with an expanded array of basic need programs and services that promote independence and self-reliance.

They now run Tempe’s longest running and largest Food Pantry program, including a partnership with Tempe Schools, Tempe’s I-HELP shelter program (Interfaith Homeless Emergency Lodging Program) for men and women experiencing homelessness – the ONLY homeless shelter program in Tempe, their Family Economic Advancement program –helping single parent households improve their financial stability through credit repair, increased wages, microenterprise and home-ownership opportunities, a Community Action Program – providing rent and utility assistance to prevent homelessness, two community gardens (Escalante Community Garden and Clark Park Community Garden), Health Start – a pre and post-natal program for low income expectant families, three Senior Centers offering a lunch service and activities, and a Home Delivered Meals program which delivers nutritious meals and wellness checks to homebound seniors and individuals with disabilities. As you can imagine this is a huge undertaking and thankfully TCAA is supported by more than 1,000 volunteers resulting in more than 27,000 volunteer hours.

Listeners will be inspired by the stories our guests shared about the impact their programs are having on Tempe residents and the numerous opportunities for businesses and/or individuals to get involved. TCAA has ongoing volunteer orientations every month for folks to learn about TCAA and how they can volunteer in any of their programs and services. They also have the ability to facilitate corporate presentations throughout the community to increase awareness of their services and ways to get involved. This includes volunteering in their Food Pantry, serving meals in the I-HELP shelter program, conducting a variety of drives including food, laundry pod and dryer sheet drives for their new mobile laundry trailer – first of its kind in AZ, holiday gift drives, administration support, onsite volunteer opportunities at your place of work, conducting a variety of workshop or classes to seniors, volunteer work days at the Community Gardens (great for families), and helping out with any number of special events.

If you’re looking for a unique fundraiser featuring an elegant evening event that showcases Tempe’s culinary and cultural diversity, along with a fabulous silent auction, music and entertainment all under the Arizona stars, mark your calendars for VICINITY Friday, Oct. 19, 2018 at Big Surf Waterpark. All proceeds go to support TCAA’s programs.

Since 1966, Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA) has endeavored to be the voice and catalyst of empowerment and opportunity, providing hands-on assistance to Tempe residents in need and responding promptly to emerging human services issues. What started off as a small grass-roots neighborhood self-help initiative eventually incorporated in 1971 and expanded its array of basis need programs and services for those in need.

Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA)’s mission is to foster dignity and self- reliance for the economically vulnerable in the communities it serves. It accomplishes this mission through five focus areas: Hunger Relief, Homeless Prevention and Intervention, Senior Independence, Healthy Families, and Family Economic Advancement. Current programs include: Tempe’s largest and longest running Food Pantry program, I-HELP- the City’s only homeless shelter program for adults, a Community Action Program (providing emergency rent/utility assistance), three senior centers, Home-Delivered Meals, Health Start – providing home-based pre/post-natal support, two community gardens (Escalante – the City’s first community garden and Clark Park), and the Family Economic Advancement program which seeks to improve the economic stability of families by moving them out of poverty through employment, education and/or homeownership. As Tempe’s largest social service agency, TCAA operates from four sites in Tempe and Scottsdale. It remains the primary entry point for low- income households experiencing crisis and seeking to improve their quality of life. Its capacity to bring about positive change impacts over 22,000 unduplicated children and adults annually.

Sophia-Campbell-of-TCAA-on-Business-RadioXSophia Campbell currently works as the Director of Philanthropy at the Tempe Community Action Agency (TCAA). She is an experienced non-profit professional with a demonstrated history of successful fundraising within the human services sector. Sophia is a highly skilled grant writer and fundraising professional whose passion includes donor cultivation, building corporate and foundation partnerships, volunteer management and special events. No longer working directly with clients as a social worker, Sophia currently enjoys utilizing her fundraising skills, and expertise to build TCAA’s organizational capacity to support vulnerable individuals and families in need. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, Sophia moved to Phoenix, AZ in 1999. She resides in Chandler with her husband, children and three dogs.

Theresa-Mckenzie-of-TCAA-on-Business-RadioXTheresa Mckenzie has 13 years of experience in the arena of volunteer/event management. Born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  Accepted an appointment to West Point from Senator William Proxmire to join the class of 1980.  Having turned down a number of football scholarships, I decided to play at West Point.  I played in 10 varsity games on special teams and at defensive tackle my freshman year.  I had the chance to play against household names like Joe Montana, Tony Dorsett, Hugh Green, Mike Singletary, Howie Long, Fred Smerlas and many others.  I graduated in 1980 with an engineering degree with a concentration in Chemistry, became Airborne qualified and brought my shiny new butter bar to 1st Armored Division in Germany.  After 3 years in Germany I came back to 1st Cav Division at Ft Hood as a Captain.

My business career started at Mobil Chemical in the Plastic packaging business.  On my 30th birthday I became the manager of Mobil’s International Films group.  I worked as a senior executive for 4 different companies before starting my first company in January 2004.  I have been part of 14 small company startups since that time, centered around general business leadership and new startup technology.  Currently 3 of those 15 companies are operating.

2015-Digital-Ball-with-James-Franklin-and-Jay-Ferro-in-Booth-61-5-09-2015What an honor to close Booth 61 with Ricky Steele at the Techbridge 2015 Digital Ball with none other than the CEO, James Franklin and the Chairman, Jay Ferro. I am personally in awe of both of these men which is not the job of a radio host. It is however the responsibility of someone who has watched what these two men have accomplished to change our community for good. In addition to Techbridge, James and Jay are involved in many, many other activities across multiple not for profit organizations. Millions of our fellow citizens have had their lives impacted by the dedication, passion and love shared by James and Jay on a daily basis.

As for the interview, it was exciting to hear a few “spoilers” before announcements were made later at the dinner. There are so many exciting developments within Techbridge that you should visit www.techbridge.org today to learn for your self. There is room for more passionate, caring people to volunteer your time, talent and treasure to help alleviate the suffering of many good men, women and children in Atlanta and across the world.

I hope you enjoy this interview as much as I enjoyed being a small part of the process.

Medical Associaiton of Georgia

MAG LOGO

Medical Reserve Corps

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has approved MAG’s request to form the nation’s first medical society-sponsored statewide volunteer medical reserve corps (MRC). MAG and the Georgia Department of Public Health would oversee MAG’s MRC. MAG is now eligible for limited federal capacity building funds and has in fact received a 2015 grant for $2,500 – though the MAG MRC will require funding from private sources to fully maximize its vision.

The MAG MRC will train physicians to respond to declared emergencies in Georgia, and it will establish a system to coordinate the deployment of those physicians during any such emergencies. The MAG MRC will supplement the official medical and public health and emergency services resources that are available in the state. MAG MRC units will be capable of setting up mobile hospital systems. And under extreme circumstances (e.g., a shortage of health care providers in a given area), MAG MRC units can be called upon to perform some of the functions that would otherwise be performed by the full-time emergency medical response personnel in the state. MAG formed the MRC as a result of 2013 House of Delegates meeting action.

The MRC is a national network of volunteers, organized locally to improve the health and safety of their communities. The MRC network comprises 993 community-based units and 207,783 volunteers located throughout the United States and its territories. Georgia has 19 approved MRCs.

MRC volunteers include medical and public health professionals, as well as other community members without healthcare backgrounds. MRC units engage these volunteers to strengthen public health, improve emergency response capabilities and build community resiliency. They prepare for and respond to natural disasters, such as wildfires, hurricanes, tornados, blizzards, and floods, as well as other emergencies affecting public health, such as disease outbreaks. They frequently contribute to community health activities that promote healthy habits.

The designated point of contact is the Director of Health Protection with DPH. The MAG MRC may also be activated by MAG MRC leadership team as necessary. The MAG MRC Unit will supplement the State of Georgia Public Health Emergency Preparedness’ and Response Unit. The unit will not replace or supplant the existing emergency medical response system or its resources including locally based MRC units.

Special Guests:

John S. Harvey, M.D.

  • Chief of Surgery, Gwinnett Medical Center
  • Acting Colonel and Command Surgeon, Georgia State Defense Force
  • MAG’s President-elect.
  • Missions have included the Katrina/Rita hurricane and Haiti earthquake victim airlifts. He dealt with the Centennial Park bombing that took place during the 1996 Olympics as a medical command officer.
  • Doctor of Medicine, Medical College of Georgia

Susan Moore

Susan Moore has been MAG’s Director of Health Policy and Third Party Payer Advocacy since 2013. She helps MAG members resolve third party payer claim disputes and grievances. She has spent 30 years in the health care industry – more than half of those focused on patient safety and health care quality. Moore has a degree in nursing from the Emory University School of Nursing and a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the Yale School of Public Health at Yale University.

Paul Hildreth

Paul Hildreth is the emergency management coordinator/grant coordinator for REMS for the Fulton County School District. He has 14 years of experience in emergency response and crisis management. He is a certified emergency manager and master certified emergency manager. He has been an integral part of the Georgia State Defense Force for 10 years. He has a degree in business operations from DeVry University and an MBA from the University of Phoenix.

Ann Serrie is a native of New York City.  When she was old enough for the novelty of cold weather and snow to wear off, she promptly moved to Atlanta! J  At the age of 12, Ann’s grandmother told her that she didn’t want to die in a hospital.  She continued to repeat this message for 20 years.  Ultimately, Ann’s grandmother received the benefits of hospice, and died peacefully in her own home.  This forever marked Ann, and caused her to begin volunteering at Hospice Atlanta nearly 20 years ago.  Five years ago, after 13 years of volunteering, Ann was asked to join the Hospice Atlanta staff.  Today she is the Direct of Volunteers at Hospice Atlanta, and loves every minute!

Starting her adult life as a nun in Nebraska, Marilyn Anderson has spent her career in the service of others.  During her service as a nun, she started attending special services in a chapel where older nuns were dying.  This made a huge impact on Marilyn.  Over the course of years, she taught on a Native American reservation in South Dakota, and later earned a Masters Degree in Political Science and International Studies from Notre Dame.  She also earned a Master of Arts degree from the University of San Francisco.  At the age of 54, she met a widower in the Midwest, married and moved to Atlanta.  After formal retirement, Marilyn realized that she couldn’t possibly “just retire”, and started volunteering with St. Jude’s Parish.  This led to volunteering at Hospice Atlanta, where she continues to volunteer today.

Hospice Atlanta is a non-profit hospice with both a 36 bed campus in Buckhead, and a vibrant home-based hospice.  Hospice Atlanta is the largest non-profit hospice in Atlanta, and falls under the umbrella of the Visiting Nurse Health System.  Their facility is located at 1244 Park Vista Drive in Atlanta.  If you are interested in learning more about Hospice Atlanta, or about volunteering, you can visit their website at www.vnhs.org, or call them at (404) 869-3000.

We want to thank Griswold Special Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Special Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Dallas and Atlanta for 20 years.

Growing up in the great state of Idaho, Kevin Reitz was a Boise State Bronco fan before it was fashionable to be a fan.  Does that make him a hipster?  After graduating from Boise State, Kevin took a position in the Enterprise Car Rental Management Training program.  He later had an opportunity with a small software company selling crime scene and accident reconstruction software (yes, it really exists and no, I’m no making it up).  As the company launched an initiative into the private sector, Kevin was asked to relocate to the Dallas area.  About three years ago, he became aware of a sales position with a local assisted living facility.  After only 8 months, Kevin was asked to take on the Executive Director’s role at a sister community.  During this time, Kevin realized that the senior services market offered another dimension of meaning to his career.

About a year and a half ago, Kevin moved again for the opportunity to work at Griswold Special Care, a non-medical homecare provider serving the Dallas metro area.  Kevin and his wife, Shelley, recently became the owners of the Dallas North Office of Griswold Special Care.  Kevin tells us he and Shelley had often talked and dreamed of owning their own business, and now that dream has become a reality.  Griswold Special Care’s unique differentiator is its ability to focus on both high quality and affordability at the same time.  Kevin is proud of the fact that his service is several dollars per hour lower than most competitors, and at the same time, the caregivers make 10-15% more than their peers at other agencies.  To find out more, contact Kevin directly at (972) 554-0700, email him at Kevin@gscdallas.com, or visit his website at www.gscdallas.com.

A rare Atlanta native, Chris Brand has been involved in helping disabled adults and seniors for as long as he can remember.  As a young man, he had a friend of the family whose son suffered from Muscular Dystrophy.  He watched the family’s struggles until the son died at the age of 19.  This gave him a first-hand look at how difficult it can be for a family to deal with the disability of a loved one, particularly with respect to independence and mobility issues.

Interestingly, Chris began early in his career by volunteering for Friends of Disabled Adults and Children (FODAC).  He was quickly hired by the founder of the organization, and spent three years as their donations coordinator.  Moving on to broaden his experience, Chris left FODAC for a few years.  In 1999, he returned as a program manager.  He has been there ever since, and is now the President and CEO of the organization.

FODAC was founded in 1986 to assist families of disabled adults and children in accessing both equipment and services to facilitate accessibility and independence.  FODAC fills 3,600 requests, distributing over 5,000 items each year from its 65,000 square foot facility in Stone Mountain.  The retail value of all medical equipment that has been given away now totals over $60 million!  To find out more about FODAC, or learn about volunteer opportunities, call them at (770) 491-9014, or visit their website at www.fodac.org.

We want to thank Griswold Special Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Special Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Dallas and Atlanta for 20 years.

Stockard CompressedDon Stockard started his career as a teacher and a coach after receiving both Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education.  It wasn’t long before Don realized that his personality and talents were well-suited to a career in sales.  Nearly 25 years ago, Don became one of the first to market and sell Long Term Care insurance in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.  Over the course of time, Don discovered that he had a real passion for our country’s service men and women, and wanted to give his own time to help them.  Approximately four years ago, Don went into semi-retirement, and began volunteering his services to assist veterans in navigating the application process for the Improved Pension Benefit, also known as Veterans Aid & Attendance.  Don’s services are free of charge to veterans and their families.  Don can be reached by phone at 1-800-500-9168 ext. 210, or at (972) 267-6735.  He can also be reached via email at d_stockard@sbcglobal.net

Patti Elrod Hill grew up and went to school in South Dakota.  She acknowledges that when people learn she’s from South Dakota, the typical response is “I’ve never met anyone from South Dakota before”!  Fortunately for Patti, her next stop was Hawaii, thanks to a Navy marriage.  After 3 years in Hawaii, she moved again, this time to St. Louis.  While in St. Louis, she discovered a passion for the law, and attended Law School at Washington University.  Upon graduation, and yet another move to the Atlanta area, Pattie took a job with the Veteran’s Administration.  At the VA she developed an interest in serving the elder and disabled population.  Today she is the owner and lead counsel for The Elrod-Hill Law Firm.  She prides herself in being personally involved with every client.  Her firm specializes inElrod Van Treese compressed elder law and veterans benefits planning.  Patti can be reached at (770) 416-0776, or on the web at www.elrod-hillfirm.com.

Faye Vantreese (right) is a long term care specialist with Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.  Prior to her career as a financial advisor, she attended Syracuse University, and graduated with a BS degree in Design.  Beyond her work with Northwestern Mutual, Faye is very involved in the local community.   She is the President of the Kiwanis Club of Decatur.  Faye is also actively involved in the Decatur Business Association, and has served on numerous boards, including Senior Connections and Life Enrichment Senior Services Board.  Faye can be reached at (404) 354-1039, or visit her on the web at www.fayevantreese.nmfn.com.
