In this edition of Global Leader Radio!™, we discuss a successful approach to leading volunteer organizations. Tino Mantella joined as Alvin C. Miles’ in-studio guest to discuss the focus of TAG, the art of leading large teams and the passion of life-long learning!

Here are seven takeaways from our discussion:

  1. Applying business principles to non-profits equals more impact on people’s lives.
  2. Step outside of your comfort zone – stretch for success!
  3. Leading large teams of volunteers is sometimes more art than science.

  4. Have a desire and passion to be the best.
  5. Install metrics and goals to ensure your people know where they stand.

  6. Fail fast, learn by your experiences and keep moving forward!
  7. Build your resume by donating a percentage of your time in service to others!

Listen as Tino provides great examples to illustrate these points. Then add his ideas to your leadership toolkit to help increase YOUR influence. Leadership IS a conversation!

Finding and developing talent in the franchise industry is very different from the traditional corporate world. Franchisors have to find the right talent to build the business and maintain the brand. Bill Williams is a Franchise Advisor who works with Franchisors to help them find the right talent for their organization. Listen as Bill talks about the qualities needed in a successful franchisee along with franchise owner Monte Bruner with The Dentist’s Choice. Bill knows what it’s like to want to control your destiny by owning a business.

He began his career as an officer in the United States Army where he served for several years and is a Vietnam veteran.   For more than 25 years, he was an executive with technology companies, responsible for training, support, operations and IT.

After experiencing “his final corporate reorganization,” he became an adjunct career consultant with Right Management Associates, the firm who provided his outsourcing services and realized he is, at heart, an entrepreneur.

It was there that he discovered his passion to help others discover their full potential. “As a consultant, I helped them get past the anger and shock of being fired and see this as one of the greatest opportunities of their lives,” he says. “Often, they chose to ‘hire themselves’ and start their own businesses.”

Bill also had aspirations to be his own boss. He wanted to run a business that capitalized on his military and corporate experiences to help others realize their dreams. Research showed that the structure and track record of franchise businesses increased an owner’s success rate.

Genuine. Seasoned and wise. Of the highest integrity. Respected and trusted. Caring. An excellent listener with your best interests at heart. That’s how Bill’s colleagues and clients describe him. He speaks and writes on career issues and hopes to write a book one day soon, “Golf as a Metaphor for Life”.

An avid runner and golfer, Bill has been married to his wife, Lucy, since 1969. They live in Marietta, Georgia, and have three adult children, all married and in their own careers, and two, soon to be three grandchildren.

Bill can be reached via email at bwilliams@4axxiom.com.

A rare Atlanta native, Bob Carr tells us he grew up less than a mile from the Eugeria! Radio Studio!  He attended Sandy Springs High School, attended The University of Georgia, earning a BS degree in Psychology, then served in the US Army at Fort Benning as a Second Lieutenant.

After leaving the military, Bob began a career in the insurance industry.  He spent ten years running his own agency before selling it and founding Executive Adventure, with a mission of encouraging better communication and teamwork in business and corporate organizations.  After nearly three decades, Bob sold Executive Adventure, and started working with senior adults with cognitive impairments.  Having seen the impact on patients and their families first-hand, Bob connected with Second Wind Dreams to help them fulfill their mission of enhancing the quality of seniors’ lives through the fulfillment of dreams and education of families and senior care professionals.

Founded by P.K. Beville in 1997, Second Wind Dreams is a non-profit organization that seeks to experientially educate individuals with respect to what it’s like to live with a cognitive impairment such as is caused by Alzheimer’s disease and others.  The Virtual Dementia Tour provides a tactile experience that inhibits a persons natural motor and cognitive abilities.  After a few minutes in a darkened room, and having been asked to perform simple tasks, the participants then share their experiences with others in a facilitated feedback session.

For our listeners in Atlanta, there will be a Virtual Dementia Tour experience held on January 31 at the Holiday Inn in Roswell, located at 909 Holcomb Bridge Road, from 10 am to 1 pm.  If you would like to register, please call Candice at 678-624-0500, or email her at Candice@secondwind.org.  You may also visit their website at www.secondwind.org.

We want to thank Griswold Home Care for sponsoring today’s show.  Griswold Home Care has been a preferred provider of high quality, affordable in-home senior care in Atlanta for 20 years.
