Directing Cisco’s Community Relations initiatives in Georgia, Renee Byrd-Lewis was the next we talked to. Renee is responsible for ensuring that Cisco is actively involved in social, quality of life, talent and business issues affecting the region. She serves to position Cisco as a strategic business partner and aggregator for community issues, bringing civic leaders, business leaders and subject matter experts together to discuss opportunities and topics of local importance.
Renee talked about how she was in the right place at the right time when a career change opportunity came. With formal work experience in higher education and nonprofit management, the Cisco opportunity allowed her to leverage her experience and my skill set in a different and exciting way.
Cisco is a $40B global company with 70K employees and 400 offices in 165 countries. However, in communities where Cisco has a major employee and operational presence, there is interdependency between Cisco and key local community stakeholders in the education, non-profit, government and business sectors. Each has its own important and unique role in helping ensure a quality of life for all citizens.
Renee leverages Cisco resources, including thought leadership, employee volunteers and financial contributions, to effectively and efficiently meet local community needs. The end result benefits both the company and community. Alignment of our capabilities with local social and economic goals helps strengthen the business environment and the community overall.
When it comes to Community Relations, Renee primarily serves Gwinnett County due to Cisco’s operational presence and the nearly 2,000 employees who work there. However, there are also inextricable ties to the metro Atlanta region and the state of Georgia as a whole. Renee and Cisco understand the importance of a strong central city and state overall. From a financial investment perspective, Cisco invested nearly $2M in the local community through Foundation grants. More than $500K of that figure was generated by employees through Cisco’s matching gifts program.
Renee talked about how giving back to the community is at the core of Cisco culture both a business and philanthropic perspective. In honor of Cisco’s 25th Anniversary, CEO John Chambers initiated a global volunteer challenge for employees to contribute 200,000 volunteer hours by October 31st and they are at 87% and on track to achieve that goal.

A Conversation with Renee Stout and Mark Shekerow

Like so many others, Renee Stout became interested in serving the senior community through a personal experience. She describes her grandmother as her “soul mate”. When her grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, Renee left sales job in Dallas to care for her in Rhode Island. Born and raised in central Connecticut, Renee earned a degree in marketing from Central Connecticut University. After spending a number of years in the manufacturing intdustry, and fresh from her Caregiving experience with her grandmother, Renee started working in sales and marketing for a senior independent living community and then later, an assisted living community. Today Renee is the Director of Business Development for Halo Medical Service, an emergency and non-emergency transport company serving the Dallas metro area. To find out more about Halo Medical Service, visit their website at www.haloms.com, or call them at (972) 228-3555.
Mark Shekerow has been in the printing business for 30 years. Originally from Rhode Island, Mark came to Atlanta via Washington DC and Orlando in 1990. Today Mark is the CEO and Publisher of Regional Caregiver Magazine, currently published in three local markets: Atlanta, Orlando and Charlotte. Originally the idea of his creative director, JoAnn Pauley, the magazine was born out of a frustration for the lack of resources for family caregivers. Thus, the purpose and vision of Regional Caregiver Magazine is to provide a localized resource for caregivers. According to Mark, the primary need of caregivers is information, and that is exactly what he provides in his magazine. Check out the latest issue of the magazine at www.sgcaregiver.com, or contact Mark directly at 404-683-7776.
Glenda Phillips, Inventor of SOK-ITZ Arm Rest Cover

Glenda Phillips of SOK-ITZ is an inventor with a heart of gold. She is a passionate advocate for Childhood Cancer Awareness, an active participant in the “Fly 4 Life” Event benefiting “The National Children’s Cancer Society” scheduled for September 19,2010, plus she held the 1st fundraiser for the initial Ronald McDonald House in Louisville, Kentucky.
The SOK-ITZ arm rest cover has many applications. Germ-phobic airline passengers use them to protect themselves from an unsanitary arm rest: easy to install, remove, take home, wash and reuse. Vehicle owners use them to protect the arm rests in their vehicle to increase resale value. Companies increase brand awareness by ordering SOK-ITZ with their logo for existing and potential customers.
Listen in as Glenda shares her inventive journey.
